by "refining" if you mean "watering it down so you get a style that is basically only muay thai and BJJ" then i'd agree with you

i won't disagree with that, but mma is a sport with rules and a governing body.  the rules will cater to the sport and what it becomes.  i wouldn't count him out in an elite level (like anderson silva, fedor, elite) mma fight, but i don't think it'd be SO one sided

bruce lee was all about having it be practical, anywhere, everywhere, using whatever means possible to be effective, and doing it in a way that fits the individuals' personal styles and bodies.

definitely.  on the street, it wouldn't be a contest.  i think i misinterpreted what you said at first (i wasn't very sober )

and may i also add... how bruce lee trained back then... i don't think many ppl nowadays can keep up with even today.  he was a freak.  incredible condition.  and incredibly strong.  a man that size delivering a side kick strong enough to send a 200 pound punching bag hitting the ceiling?  i'd like to see ANYBODY even try to do that today.

i know.  he was fucking scary, AND he was like that without modern training techniques (less important) and approaches to nutrition and "nutritional supplements"

 (more important).  he was a freak.  one of those once in a lifetime freaks

something unrelated, he taught steve mcqueen's son jeet kune do  :rockit:.  chuck norris taught steve mcqueen's son tkd (i think).  steve mcqueen was the person who encouraged chuck norris to take acting classes

u show that picture to try and point out the diff between then and now... but bruce lee could have easily been twice as big as that guy.  he just didn't want to be because muscles too big means he'd be slow, and speed is a very important aspect of martial arts.

i think chuck norris did tang soo do, not tae kwon do.

both.  he's an 8th degree black belt in tkd

@ sean sherk:  that was a joke

@ bruce lee's physical prowess:  he would have been a freak at any point in time.  that's not to say that he wouldn't have been more of a freak had he trained today

learn to quote properly.

pride is a competition in japan.  pride fc is in a ring, and ufc is in a cage/octagon.

I noticed that there is significant variation between roundhouse kick techniques in various styles...what is the best way of doing if (power-speed wise)

there is no "best way".  it all depends on the situation, and ur opponent.

in terms of speed probably tkd, and in terms of power maybe muay thai.

tkd is too much of a flick, though, it doesn't start far enough back. I only use that style when I'm doing double roundhouse kicks. And muay thai has the opposite problem...they almost have to reset their hips to do the kick. I know in shotokan we bring our leg up parallel to the ground and at a ninety degree angle to our hip, and thrust it around with our hip. In practice, thought, it is a bit more like the tkd kick.

so then what i said is completely correct.  tkd for speed, MT for power.

but it's not always just a flick man, they are taught to strike through the target, straight across, horizontally.  and they almost always kick with their rear leg so it is back far enough.

and as i said, there is no "best" way to do it.  it depends on the situation and ur opponent... also depends on what ur target is (thighs, ribs, head, etc.)
