@bruce lee: fucking legend. he was essentially the founder of mma. could he come out and beat the shit out of everyone as is under mma rules, who knows? many people have had years to refine the shit out of what he created. if he grew up now, jesus fucking christ, he was like brock lesnar freak level - modern training
+ he would presumably find some way to revolutionize the way in which people fight today
comparing bruce lee to modern mma fighters , it's like comparing humans to god or pele to cristiano ronaldo
by "refining" if you mean "watering it down so you get a style that is basically only muay thai and BJJ" then i'd agree with you.
dan inosanto and others have "refined" it. mma... have taken it in a completely new and different direction. it's sports fighting. bruce lee was all about having it be practical, anywhere, everywhere, using whatever means possible to be effective, and doing it in a way that fits the individuals' personal styles and bodies.
and may i also add... how bruce lee trained back then... i don't think many ppl nowadays can keep up with even today. he was a freak. incredible condition. and incredibly strong. a man that size delivering a side kick strong enough to send a 200 pound punching bag hitting the ceiling? i'd like to see ANYBODY even try to do that today.
the only thing to be said is he didn't investigate enough into ground fighting like BJJ... but he did study judo and wrestling and other grappling styles. and to be fair... for what he was trying to go for (real life applications) BJJ isn't always the best choice. some guy does a takedown and tries to mount you... u can rip at his flesh, poke his eyes out, grab his nuts, bite him, or anything. BJJ is a good art and is very effective in many ways, but i think bruce lee had it covered.
