that is the biggest load of bullshit i have ever seen.  i've seen this vidz before.

and i'd be more impressed if he could ring that bell without stomping the ground with his foot.  but still it's not very impressive after that.

I practiced with my bruv. what do you guys do?

hahaha.  well no offence but i wouldn't consider dvds and internet videos.... "training" lol.  if it was, then i'd be "trained" in like a hundred different martial arts haha so i don't think it counts

yes i do love to research and learn about all the different types of arts, their philosophies, applications, etc.  that's cuz i practically live by bruce lee's philosophies.

in terms of formal training, i've done tkd, hkd, wing chun, and some BASIC submission wrestling (BJJ without the gi)

and of course, all the other kinds of arts i study about and try to incorporate into my style but never formally trained in.

also, i think it's silly to discuss what is better to do when with what or anything like that... if you've never actually trained in martial arts urself.  sometimes things tend to be really different when ur actually doing them, than how they were 'theoretically'.

yikes... you're quite trained!  :saywhat:
but I think I can take you haha.  :bs:

I don't think I should be doubted in BJJ. The tutorials were used like Horion was actually in front of us, we trained hard. like each skill for days. obviously I'm NOTHING compared to someone who actually studied in the dojo (or whatever) with the gracies, but I think I know how to put theory into practice.
we love to spar a lot too.  gets kinda messy, almost twisted my bruvs knee permanently.

oh so it wasn't just a dvd or something, u were actually there being taught by him?  well that's much better then.  and since i only know the basics in grappling, we're pretty much same level in that probably lol.

i was taught grappling by a good friend of mine who trains at a local BJJ place.  so i'm nothing special on the ground but i know what i'm doing at least.

I have only been a member of one martial arts dodjo: Shotokan karate and Judo are taught there and my sensei is one of the few North Americans to train at Nitai Dai (spelling?), the top dojo is Japan. He has taught at zen monasteries and stuff

so yeah I have a fairly solid foundation of locks and submission, and takedowns, but I've been trained primarily in the striking style. Believe it or not I incorporate soccer fakes into my sparring to fake people out (I've made people kick the wrong way and stuff because many martial artists aren't familiar with those kinds of body fakes) and I watch random vids of other styles and try to incorporate techniques that could be useful and that would mesh with my style

consider doing the Garrincha lunge fakes and stuff...they are really effective

but if you go up against a well trained martial artist, those kind of lunges can get u in a lot of trouble.  you tend to leave urself way open in way too many spots when u do those.

when i spar i don't attack, i counterattack.  i try to waste as little energy as possible and in the end the other might be panting and sweating and i wouldn't be because i didn't use useless movements to waste my energy (altho sometimes fakes and feints can be good).  i don't focus on what i do, but rather what my opponent does and what i can do in reaction to him/her.  because in a fight it's not about ur proper form or technique only, but about how you are going to defeat ur opponent (and sparring is just training to get urself more comfortable in the application of this and the application of ur techniques).

and trust me, if you've been trained right and know what to look for, ur opponent will give away practically his entire plan of attack before he even does anything.

I am a really defensive sparrer....my fakes and feints are for dodges more than anything else...I get them to attack me by GIVING them openings with feints like the Garrincha lunge, and then dudge them if they fall for it...although sometimes when I'm messing around with someone I don't really take seriously I will cross themm over and fake a few times so that they get confused and attack in the wrong direction...a few times I'll try those crazy jumping double crescent kicks that you see in random showy martial arts just for jokes    (although not when I'm actually in a serious match)

my brother told me that when I'm doing the whole feinting routine (which I have done in matches) I look like Michael Jackson

But in all seriousness a lot of this shit wouldn't work in a self defence situation. Stick to the basics. In all my 8 years of martial arts experience my sensei has been telling us that constantly

self defence is completely different cuz there are no rules, anything goes, u can be surprised, there can be multiple attackers, weapons, obstacles depending on the environment, and plus ur main objective is to neutralize the threat and get away as quick as possible.

but of course, some stuff can and does transfer over to self defence as well.

but dude u don't seem to understand... u may think ur succeeding with ur clever tactics and u are.  but if u go up against a really smart martial artist that has been well trained, he'll be able to see right through you.  i know because i've been trying to study that aspect of martial arts for some time now.  there are subtle hints you give away that can be taken advantage of that u don't even know about.

no I understand...this is what I'm trying to say: I use that stuff against people who I know aren't gonna read that stuff...I would never use that crap against an unknown quantity and I which I had a really smart martial artist (eg my sensei or a really good black belt) against whom I could try those fakes on a regular basis to perfect them. But alas, I don't. I get to spar them occasionally, but then I spar more conservatively and I don't take risks, you know what I'm saying?
