No but for real, what has brought you to this conclusion....because then I will try to convince you otherwise not because I believe in god (which I'm not entirely sure of), but because I want to see if I can

There is a god,  the earth and its astronomical complexities as the evidence.  Now the devil, hell, heaven, adam and eve seem like fairy tales to me.

On another note, I can't get mad at the topic starter, cause I would rather hear that then the ultimate extremist pro-god people that believe the most absurd things.

Agnosticism (Greek: ?- a-, without + ?????? gn?sis, knowledge; after Gnosticism) is the philosophical view that the truth value of certain claims — particularly metaphysical claims regarding theology, afterlife or the existence of deities, ghosts, or even ultimate reality — is unknown or, depending on the form of agnosticism, inherently impossible to prove or disprove. It is often put forth as a middle ground between theism and atheism.[1]

Embrace it, Understand it, Love it.

I myself am a deist, but borderline agnostic

Just because the earth and the universe is complex to understand doesn't mean we just ignore finding out about how it all happens and put it that "God" made everything.

Eric Clapton is God. Therefore God exists.

But for real, here is one of the oldest proofs for god's existence (it's flawed, but you're not supposed to know that). Lets see what you all make of it:

Rene Descartes' Ontological "Proof of God." is, roughly:

   1. I exist

   2. I have in my mind the notion of a perfect being

   3. An imperfect being, like myself, cannot think up the notion of a perfect being

   4. Therefore the notion of a perfect being must have originated from the perfect being himself

   5. A perfect being would not be perfect if it did not exist

   6. Therefore a perfect being must exist

I'm so shit at it and lack anything closely resembling a video camera. I used to play a blues style but have now discarded hat and am working on my finger picking and am becoming half-decent at harmonics. My chord-playing abilities are awful, though. I have no chops, and can't do powerchords. So basically I'm stuck with folk, blues, rock with classical influences, randon fingerpicking stuff, and blues-based rock

I only do it to write songs. But I've started to use Powertab for that. It's a great program, you should check it out (it works for bass too, if thats your thang)

my personal belief is that god is the entirety of reality and the universe and existence of everything itself.  they are not seperate, and god is not a seperate higher being that created it.

if god is everywhere at the same time at all times, this only makes sense to me.

it's an imperfect and flawed belief, but then again every other belief out there is also just that.  the only thing that makes timeless sense, i believe, is what bruce lee said.

"Truth has no path. Truth is living and, therefore, changing." - Bruce Lee

no offence to Bruce Lee but this is a cliche: If Truth is constantly changing then we cannot ever know for more than a point in time. Following that logic, we can't know if truth is changing, and we can't know that we can't know, etc..it's an eternal progression of ignorance, which is a fairly bleak view for humanity, and which refutes any statement either you, or I, or Bruce Lee ever made.

My philosophy is rooted in language. Maybe later I'll do a copy paste of my thought, but my philosophical musings, sadly, are on another computer. So until then, you'll have to wait.

but that's just the thing man.  he believes in things being dynamic, constantly living, breathing, changing, and never one solid stiff static thing.

everything is a never ending process, a progression.  it's not bleak, it's quite the exact opposite of that actually!

That had nothing to do with what I just said. The implications of my logical conclusion are as follow:

1) we can never realize that we are hanging
2) we cannot be self-aware
3) we cannot understand the past
4) we are unaware that we are unaware
5) our thoughts travel in a self-contradictory path and render themselves pointless

u shud do a bit more research first.  this is the entire quote if you must know, which you do.

"Truth has no path. Truth is living and, therefore, changing. Awareness is without choice, without demand, without anxiety; in that state of mind, there is perception. To know oneself is to study oneself in action with another person. Awareness has no frontier; it is giving of your whole being, without exclusion." - Bruce Lee

it's something that spawned from and is somewhat based on martial arts, but i think it can easily extend far beyond that and apply to a LOT of different things as well.

Thats all well and good, and a beautiful vision. But. Mr. Lee has made several transgressions in informal logic which I hope he backs up. He has used a few loaded terms which need to be defined in order to validate the argument:
Truth, awareness, choice, anxiety, state, mind, perception, awareness, being.

It should be your decision to whether you believe in god or not. If somebody does believe they shouldn't go to such major extents to convincing people that what they believe in is true (Not going to state any religions here) If somebody does not believe in god or such faith that is there own opinion and they shouldn't be forced to convert or attacked, tortured, burnt on a stake etc, I personally believe in god through christianity but I am not going to convince somebody to share the same beliefs as me solely for showing respect for their own personal beliefs. Peace to all, and if there is no god to you jatt, respect for you anyway because its YOUR opinion.
It's all for the sake of argument. Nobody is going to get converted on a soccer freestyle forum. Arguing stuff like this is fun.

he didn't believe in god in the traditional sense of the word, within organized religions.  he was still a spiritual human being.

it can still be logical if you open the statement up to a variety of other possibilities rather than pinning it down and restricting it to one specific meaning.

yes i believe so.

my personal belief is that god is the entirety of reality and the universe and existence of everything itself.  they are not seperate, and god is not a seperate higher being that created it.

if god is everywhere at the same time at all times, this only makes sense to me.

it's an imperfect and flawed belief, but then again every other belief out there is also just that.  the only thing that makes timeless sense, i believe, is what bruce lee said.

Thats all well and good, and a beautiful vision. But. Mr. Lee has made several transgressions in informal logic which I hope he backs up. He has used a few loaded terms which need to be defined in order to validate the argument:
Truth, awareness, choice, anxiety, state, mind, perception, awareness, being.

dude ur being way too much of a robot about this.  allow ur mind the flexibility man.  this doesn't have to be talking about one specific narrowed down topic or thing.  he may have, but i don't know that and i've interpreted it for myself the way it makes most sense to me.  and as i've said before, this is more of a quote on the martial arts side, but interpreted in the correct ways, i believe it can apply easily to a lot of other different things.

give me an application then, because I can't seem to think of one (I'm not being facetious -- for real).

@stefan -- it arises from the view that there is a hierarchy of perfection and imperfection between beings, the humans being among the closest to god, but still imperfect. And it is impossible to conceive of something that transcends one's own mind unless it already exists. The argument's flaw was that it slipped its conclusion into its premise.

well about truth being living and changing... one obvious example that comes to mind is... at first ppl didn't know what existed beyond their own villages, next their countries... ppl thought the earth was flat... then we found out it was round... then found out it was not even a perfectly round spherical shape.... then we found out all the other shit in the universe we never knew about before... then we began to theorize about higher dimensions we can't perceive in our own realities.

that's one example of truth always changing.  please do NOT take this as the ultimate example to base his philosophy off of, but it was the first example that came to mind in terms of applying it to different things it probably wasn't originally intended for.

ahh so you're saying that truth is what we make it, and is the result of consensus perception as opposed to statements about what is and isn't set in metaphysical stone. I get you now. That IS one application.

yup.  continuing with the other example... i heard a very smart physicist use some example to explain perceiving things in higher dimensions.

like, we are fish in a pond, and the pond is the universe.  but since we can only perceive things in 3 dimensions, that is all we can see, but if we can see things in 4 or 5 dimensions maybe we could see outside the pond(universe) and see that there are several different ponds and lakes and stuff out there we didn't know existed before.

or something like that.

i believe in a combination of evolution and creation. i think when you can compare ribosomes, bone structure, and dna to other species, the similarities can be substantial.

but it seems like scientists are having trouble proving evolution on a more absolute scale.

Precisely. And children can't do anything about it because they are indoctrinated by their grown-ass stupid parents into believing in religion and God. A child born by two Muslim parents is not a Muslim child. He is a child born by two Muslim PARENTS. He is not old enough to understand the whole concept of religion. And, don't give me this shit about spirituality and moral comfort that people get from religion. I get my moral comfort from listening to music and playing soccer.  :dontknow:

evolution, or at least parts of it and adaption and all that, can be observed through generations of fruit flies for example because they have very short lives and go through generations very quickly and can be tested.

the bible, although wasn't originally intended as so, is not to be taken literally and they are fictional stories.  not even devout christians take it word by word literally... except the ridiculously retarded ones.

i completely agree dude!  i think that it's good to have beliefs tho and be spiritual, but it's also very important to be rational, realistic, practical, and not to indoctrinate others into believing what you believe like jatt said!!!  it should be a personal thing between you and yourself how you choose to view the world and reality itself.

btw, reading through some text for school today i came across something very interesting to add to my bruce lee quote.  it's from harold pinter, who received the nobel prize in 2005.  it's about the plurality of truth in art, but i think it also applies in other truths as well.

"Truth in drama is forever elusive.  You never quite find it but the search for it is compulsive.  The search is clearly what drives the endeavour.  The search is your task.  More often than not you stumble upon the truth in the dark, colliding with it or just glimpsing an image or a shape which seems to correspond to the truth, often without realising that you have done so.  but the real truth is that there never is any such thing as one truth to be found in dramatic art.  There are many.  These truths challenge each other, recoil from each other, reflect each other, ignore each other, tease each other, are blind to each other.  Sometimes you feel you have the truth of a moment in your hand, then it slips through your fingers and is lost."

For me, there doesn't need to exist a god for everything to exist, there doesn't need to exist any super-natural at all. Sure, science isn't able to answer everything just yet, but it's on its way on doing so. Well, essentially, you aren't supposed to be able to prove the existence of God. That's the whole concept; those who believe, and i'm not ashamed to say that I do, believe so because they have faith. Yes I do.

You are pretty much calling me stupid [in a nutshell, don't get riled up] But not that i'm getting offended, it's just that I, like many other people, have reason to believe. I'm not defending people that try to convert/convince people to join a certain religion. And i'm also not the type of person to take credible scientific material and disprove it. However, a lot of science is pure "theory" as well, meaning that we are only close and speculative as to how we got here.

Now, being that even the top scientists in the world don't really know for sure how we got here, I think it'd be best to keep your mind as open as possible and not reject even the most farfetched of ideas.

An argument for God along the lines of Hegelian Dialectic:

I exist. I am part of reality, and therefore reality, which we will call the absolute, is essentially me. But I entail the existence of anyone and anything I have ever interacted with, so the absolute expands to encompass them too. In essence, existence relies upon a progression of logical negation that renders existence necessary:

I cannot be the only one who exists, because in order for me to exist, my parents must have existed, and everything that has had a hand in making me who I am must have existed, or must exist.

Because the finite exists (I am finite), the opposite of finite must exist, because the notion of 'finite' requires the contrast between its oposite (infinite). It follows that because I am a being who is finite, a being who is infinite must exist. Therefore, if I am part of the absolute, then an infinite being is part of the absolute. Because there is only one notion of 'finite,' it follows that there is also only one 'infinite' which must encompass all potential for infinity.

I exist. Finite exists.

Therefore an infinite being exists.

Clearly that infinite being is a godhead, since the finite requires an infinite amount of time to create infinity (note the art of counting), and for there to be an infinite amount of time, infinity must have already existed, because there is only one infinity. Therefore, the infinite being must have preceded the finite. Since numbers can be subtracted from infinity anywhere short of an infinite amount of times without any effect on its infinite status, this infinite being could easily have spawned all finite existence (ie the universe, you, me, etc...).

I wondered what you all would make of that, but I formulated it off the top of my head so it'll probably have some errors. I don't agree with this, by the way. I just find different arguments for and against the existence of god to be very interesting.

and TF10, everything you talk about seems a little bit overwhelming. You seem to want to complicate the issue far more than it really is. It's actually quite simple, although I know you aren't entirely certain what sort of divine you believe in. Yes, the finite blah blah. It seems as if you want to think entirely too deeply into something that the answer can only be found from your belief. Trying to rationalize and reason through what you believe shouldn't be so complicated.

science is not a thing you can characterize.  it is a process.  it is a study of.  it's just a word to describe the logical, experimental process human beings go into understanding the world around us.  it's on it's way to answering everything?  impossible.  not even close.  but bit by bit we're learning more for sure.

However, a lot of science is pure "theory" as well, meaning that we are only close and speculative as to how we got here.

Now, being that even the top scientists in the world don't really know for sure how we got here, I think it'd be best to keep your mind as open as possible and not reject even the most farfetched of ideas.

there's a lot of science that are "laws" as well, not just theory.  and some theories are basically laws but aren't called so.  technically, u can argue the entire existence of reality as being just "theory" if you wanna get that far into it.

it's great to be open minded but to also be pragmatic.  imagination must coexist with logical sense.

An argument for God along the lines of Hegelian Dialectic:

I exist. I am part of reality, and therefore reality, which we will call the absolute, is essentially me. I wondered what you all would make of that, but I formulated it off the top of my head so it'll probably have some errors. I don't agree with this, by the way. I just find different arguments for and against the existence of god to be very interesting.

that's something u can say which would be completely and totally true but at the same time be so incredibly far off and wrong it's not even funny.  this has just as much credibility as religion itself, which in itself, is questionable.  not taking anything away from you i think this is an interesting angle to look at things from.

and TF10, everything you talk about seems a little bit overwhelming. You seem to want to complicate the issue far more than it really is. It's actually quite simple, although I know you aren't entirely certain what sort of divine you believe in. Yes, the finite blah blah. It seems as if you want to think entirely too deeply into something that the answer can only be found from your belief. Trying to rationalize and reason through what you believe shouldn't be so complicated.

we try to simplify things so we can try to understand them.  in truth it's an overly complicated issue that will never be resolved.  that's why the quotes i've shared about "truths" i find makes so much sense.

Lmao at people trying to prove that there isn't a God.

Fine you don't believe in god. But when you try to prove that their isn't a god you sound so confused.  :nopity:

i agree with you, but at the same time, you can sound pretty confused trying to explain the concept of god.

on another note, it's funny how, say, Jatt, dislikes when religious people try to press thier agenda. but look who's making the thread trying so hard to persuade

realistically the earth should be able to sustain just about a million people.

if we live by means we did in prehistoric times, the earth could sustain a significantly larger number of people.  i doubt that number's even close to a billion tho.

Religions have caused many problems, but they also brought about good. To call religion the root of all evil is narrow minded and stupid.
Having studied some of the world's religions, I find that a lot of religions are as credible if not more credible than Christianity. Also this thread is about the existence(non-existence) of a God-like being...however the only people trying to disprove a God attack religion which is a man made thing that is imperfect and exists for several purposes. Those purposes being good(moral values, rules, promoting charity ect.) and bad(power, wars ect).
Title: Re: There is no God
Post by: Jatt on Jan 14, 2009, 10:46: AM
Yes, that's why I wrote "Root of Evil", not "Root of All Evil". I agree that religion has brought it some goods, but the humongous issues it has created cannot even be remotely compared with those goods.  Many things bring goods, however, that does not corroborate a reason to ignore the countless disadvantages (especially when people's live are at stake).

Yeah, I see what you mean by that, but most (i hope lol)religions don't have a clause saying "kill people if they aren't in said religion". Most religions tend to  not promote war and killing and those are things done by the people in the religions. It's really about people's response to religions, some take it far too literally others completely ignore it.

Either way I completely respect your view on this matter, though I probably agree more with Aznmagic's and TGE's posts.

Also, many of the 'kill all...' statements you introduced are extrapolations made by fools as opposed to the actual religious doctrine as any sane person would see it.

That said, I don't like organized religion, because it does cause a lot of death, and results in a marked superiority complex which I find disgusting, especially within my own people.

have you ever tried to establish the exitstence of a god for yourself using rational logic?

Some people believe in god because it makes sense to them, and because they don't have the arrogance and/or creativity to try to understand everything.

Others believe in God because they have the arrogance to want to say that their way is THE way.

Others (like me) use the idea of a Godhead as a method of furthering their own understanding, belief or not.

Either way, the fact that you're acknowledging the idea of such a being means that it must exist in some form, perhaps within the consciousness with which you view the world.

Have you considered that all existence could be circular and actually depend on the consensus perception of humanity. As in, I perceive the existence of a god. Therefor, within my perception, god exists. God is the creator and causes me to be. But it is my consciousness that spawns the idea of god...

etc

Lev.20:13
If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.

(Kill homosexuals)

Psalm 14:1-3  "The fool has said in his heart, 'There is no God.'  They are corrupt,
They have done abominable works, There is none who does good.  The LORD looks down from heaven upon the children of men, To see if there are any who understand, who seek God.  They have all turned aside, They have together become corrupt; There is none who does good, No, not one."

(Atheists are "fools")

5:33, The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger, and strive with might and main for mischief through the land is: execution, or crucifixion, or the cutting off of hands and feet from opposite sides, or exile from the land: that is their disgrace in this world, and a heavy punishment is theirs in the Hereafter;

(Kill Non-believers)

Verse 24-2 says:  "The woman guilty of adultery or fornication flog each of them".

(Kill prostitutes)

And I won't even bother with the Sunni and Shia conflict.

just for the record... the bible is not a credible source of anything at all.  only shows how stupid humanity is.  it was written hundreds of years AFTER christ... and then translated several times after that.

religion is not all bad, but not all good either.  religion reflects humanity.  we created it ourselves and it is not sacred.

it SHOULDN'T have anything to do with whether a "god" exists or not.  but then again "god" itself is relative to different perspectives of perceptions.

(Kill Non-believers)
if someone is attacking your religion his attacking you
this verse clearly illustrates that Muslims have to right to defend them selves from intruders

Verse 24-2 says:  "The woman guilty of adultery or fornication flog each of them".

(Kill prostitutes)

Quote
The man and the woman guilty of fornication, flog each of them with a hundred stripes and let not compassion move you in their case in the enforcement of the law of God, if you truly believe in Allah and the Last Day. And let a party of the believers witness their punishment. This man guilty of fornication may only marry a woman similarly guilty or an idolateress and this woman guilty of fornication may only marry such a man or an idolater. The believers are forbidden such marriages. (24:2-3)

These directives mentioned in the above verses can be explained thus:

1. The man or woman who have committed fornication, both shall receive a hundred stripes.

(i) Whether a cane is used to flog a criminal or a lash, in both cases it should neither be very thick and hard nor very thin and soft.

(ii) The strike should be of medium power and the task of flogging should not be entrusted to cruel, professional executioners; on the contrary, it should be carried out by the wise elders of the society.

(iii) The criminal should not be beaten bare-bodied or while tied to a tripod.

(iv) A pregnant woman should only be flogged after she has given birth and the period of puerperal haemorrhage (naf?s) has passed.

does this state killing?

your arguments are flawed

You really think people actually give them the "hundred strikes"? They simply kill the "victim". Religious literature corroborates that it's perfectly ok (in fact a duty) to harm non-believers (these "harms" most likely turn into killings to the courtesy of brainwashed followers to actually believe this nonsense)

you got any evidence to back up that claim
or are you gonna keep claiming shit you don't know

another thing Prostitution in a Islamic country in rare to the point that it almost never happens
(i can't say it completely wiped out)
In Muslim countries they are no HIV or AID because fornication is forbidden

every teaching in Islam has its benefits
I'll give an example

If a dogs saliva touch a plate, in Islam you must wash it 3 times and the first time with sand.
At first sounds weird but scientist have now discovered that the saliva of a dog can cause over 50 types of diseases and sand purifies and combats most of them

you got any evidence to back up that claim
or are you gonna keep claiming shit you don't know

another thing Prostitution in a Islamic country in rare to the point that it almost never happens
(i can't say it completely wiped out)
In Muslim countries they are no HIV or AID because fornication is forbidden

every teaching in Islam has its benefits
I'll give an example

If a dogs saliva touch a plate, in Islam you must wash it 3 times and the first time with sand.
At first sounds weird but scientist have now discovered that the saliva of a dog can cause over 50 types of diseases and sand purifies and combats most of them

dog saliva is a lot cleaner than human saliva.

that a whole load of shit
How can dogs who lick themselves and eat their own feces be cleaner then human who continuously clean them selfs.
You need a hygiene check dude.
And if you believe that a dogs saliva is clean then you better start acting like one from a hygienic perspective

hahahaha
I wonder if any of you trying to claim Islam is all about killing non-believers actually read the books especially Qur'an
all the verses where it says kill the non-believers is referring to when the Muslims are in a battlefield
AND after those verses Allah says in the Qur'an but if they wish for peace then it is better
and escort them to a place of safety
(not just give them peace escort them to a place of safety)

so... it's either you guys been watching a lot of Islam hater videos on the net or tv and only look for specific verses and read them out of context or you're just hating on Islam for no reason
btw, I bet you didn't know that the Prophet ORDERED every Muslim to be kind to non-believers. treat them as real human beings.
when Islam says don't take them as your friends, it means don't take their BELIEFS.
Oh and also, in the battlefield there are rules for Muslim warriors
some of them are don't kill women, old ppl, children, and trees. yes, it tells us not to tear the whole f___ing place apart
also don't destroy places of worship, don't kill any monks, priests, rabbis etc...
(look at what americans are doing in Iraq. destroying Mosques and shit)
You guys should start ACTUALLY reading Islamic books instead of jumping to conclusions.

k i did some research and yea that's a myth but apparently the germs in dog's mouths are species specific so it still won't harm humans either way.

umm im not too fussed about the existance of god if someone wants to believe in god fine by me aslong as they don't push their beliefs upon me they can believe whatever the hell they want.

However to pick up on one thing Tito mentioned which is just untrue

Quote
In Muslim countries they are no HIV or AID because fornication is forbidden

This is complete and utter rubbish, there is difficulty in procuring accurate data on HIV/AID'S in the most at risk muslim countries as many or atleast the most are in Africa and refuse to admit HIV as a real disease or refuse to collect data about it but you can find some statistics.   http://www.thedailynewsegypt.com/article.aspx?ArticleID=4519 (http://www.thedailynewsegypt.com/article.aspx?ArticleID=4519)  This article talks about the prelavance of HIV in egypt. The important bits are
Quote
The number of people currently living with HIV reported to the Ministry of Health andPopulation is about 900. This figure is not an estimate. It is the actual number of reported cases.
The number of people that the UN estimates is currently living with HIV in Egypt ranges from 2,900 to 13,000 with a midpoint of 5,300.

Another Article this time on Algeria can be found here http://www.echoroukonline.com/eng/health/4239.html (http://www.echoroukonline.com/eng/health/4239.html), the important bits again
Quote
New study by the Algerian laboratory of controlling aids (HIV) and Pasteur Institute revealed that Algeria counts 3357 HIV cases, including 872 people living with dangerous phase of HIV.

+1 to the bolded part.

On a seperate note, I don't believe in an organized religion for the exact by-product of this whole thread. Who is to say who is right and who is wrong.

Why is Christianity more correct than Islam or Vice Versa? Or why is Judaism not correct, but Mormonism is?
Scientology was created by a science fiction writer and people believed it. The bible has fairy-tale esque stories within it so why is that more believable?

Agnostic people have the right idea, but being a Deist i recognize a God, as I am not arrogant and do not believe I am the almighty being. I am so far from perfect, that there has to be something higher than me, as well as all of you.

you can't disprove a god.

alright. case closed

but seriously, let me get this straight: you don't believe there is a god, fine. but you are using religious texts and context to disprove this fact? that's a joke. you have no clue what you are arguing against do you? because everything you are talking about now has nothing to do with your original claim.

Edit: I just wanted to point out that, as this thread was originally intended to disprove god, being titled "THERE IS NO GOD", it is now known that "God can't be disproved." Thus, the title of this thread should be "There is no god, yet I can't dispute or prove this right."
