ok I found a good demonstration of power off a kook kick to a ball-of-the-foot roundhouse kick without even putting the foot down:

hmmm i guess i was proven wrong, to a certain degree.  it should also still be mentioned that wooden boards are ridiculously easy to break.  i've been breaking them since i was 7 years old.
I've actually never tried so I wouldn't know

I use bags and mats

I've only ever done aikido in martial arts and i only did it for a year which wasn't really long enough to become that good at it but it was definetley fun while it lasted, and although many people say that it doesn't really help that much in fights it is fun learning how to control peoples bodies the way they do so i would recommend it as a fun relaxed martial art.

yea aikido u don't take to become a great fighter... u take it for different reasons.  it's very spiritual, and u learn how to redirect energy... and u learn some locks and grapples.... but most importantly it's the philosophy behind it that's most important which is also apparent in the fact that there are no attacking moves in aikido, only defensive counter moves.

yeah I'd do it except I like attack moves alot too even though I'm a defensive sparrer

but it sounds like an even more peaceful version of karate-do, and if you excercise the philosophical principles of karate-do to their full extent, it's pretty damn peaceful

yea man for sure.  i did hapkido, which is a korean variation on it.  it has a few of the circular movements for redirecting energy and doing self defense and counters, but it utilizes much tighter circular motions.  some linear angular motions are applied as well.... and some kicks and sparring resemble TKD.  hapkido is a very eclectic art.

it is actually surprisingly akin to that of karate-do...'be like water' is remarkably like the karate analogy of a pine tree as opposed to an oak tree: oak trees never bend, but they snap when they are under too much stress, whereas pine trees often bend and adapt to the situation, but never break.

yea there's a korean version of that too.  but it's originated from chinese taoist philosophy actually.

I don't doubt it haha

but don't you love the way he says 'be like water?' It sounds oddly evil/devious

"Be like water, my friends, be like water"

i'd say one of the greatest martial artists of all time.

musashi definitely, amazing swordsman.  too bad videos never existed back then so we'd actually know how he fought lol.

i also love the legends of huo yuanjia and wong fei hung.  legendary martial artists.

musashi wasn't just a great swordsman though (even though he defeated other great swordsmen like Gan R'yu), but he was a consummate artist and a masterful writer. One of his bookd, the Book of Five Rings is a modern bestseller

yes of course, i remember reading about him a long time ago, and a lot of my other books mention that book as well.  but i was never completely fascinated in japanese history or jap martial arts legends...

it's cuz i'm korean, so what, big whoop... lol
