well the whole art of striking the ball with your foot is very similiar in many martial art kicking techniques. i'm not sure of names, but the normal kick in most forms of martial arts is the same technique as a side volley the only difference is the part of the leg you connect with. in soccer you are supposed to strike the ball with your instep and in martial arts is should be more with the shin.  you also see people now and than use the sam leg motions used in a bicycle kick to do certain martial art kicks.
when do you use the shin to connect on a martial arts kick? You can use the ball of the foot, the instep, and both sides.

And the only soccer kicking technique that has alot in common with martial arts kicking technique is the side volley...which is similar to a middle crescent or wheel kick

@ eddy yoon: sounds cool, because thats how I developed a fair bit of my technique in soccer and in fs...my htatw is basically a reverse crescent kick into a crescent kick all in one jump...thats why I did it so soon after starting haha

have you taken many martial arts classes that instruct in kicking strikes? well if you had, you would know that they normally do tell you to strike with the shin especially if its a kick to the lower body or middle body. this normally so that you do not hurt your foot since in sparring you do not where shoes. when you use the heel or ball of the foot it is a different type of kick the to one i was referring. the only time you would strike an opponent with your instep is when you are attempting a high kick to the upper body or head.  i did mention that the technique is similar to a side volley in my post.
It's true that you'd only use instep for either head kicks or rising groing kicks. I know what kicks you mean that tend to connect with the shin, but it limits the force of the blow because it's spread out over a larger surface. The ball, kinfe edge, or heel of the foot is the optimal striking surface for kicks because of the high concentration of force in a small area. And 8 years of martial arts should mean that I've been to my fair share of kicking classes...

the shin is a VERY POWERFUL tool to utilize in kicking.  the foot is a bunch of tiny bones, while the shin is one big, solid piece of bone you can strike with.  and especially if it has been conditioned, like muay thai practitioners tend to do, it can be ESPECIALLY destructive.  i'm sorry but the concentrating the force in a small area "theory" is flawed in this case, because of how fragile the foot is compared to the shin.

the ball of the foot u'd use for front kicks, knife edge or heel for side kicks, spinning side kicks, flying sidekicks, etc... heel u'd also use for heel kicks, spinning heel kicks, etc...

and the shins are best for round kicks.

beg to differ...slightly less range/penetration with the shin, but you're right, less danger to the foot...it's a give and take. The ball of the foot is a very solid surface..the instep, not so much. I strike with my shin sometimes, but only if I'm close in, so I can see what you're saying. I almost always strike with he ball of my foot for roundhouse kicks, unless there is a range issue like I said above. The shin is effective, but if you're going for reach it might not be the optimal striking surface...you're losing a full 6 inches

edward would a right leg double roundhouse-right leg double sidekick-right leg double hook kick be effective? I was messing around with it today and the ground you cover is ridiculous...but would it work in sparring?

how the hell do you use the ball of ur foot for roundhouse kicks?  are we even talking about the same kick here? hahahahaha.

(haha i just noticed the guy holding the bag is holding it wrong lol)
but you get the point.

and as for that combo.... i wouldn't try it.  6 kicks with only ur right leg?  nah man.  plus, if someone did that against me they probably wouldn't get past the first side kick lol.

I was thinking more along the lines of the karate-do roundhouse kick...here is a vid of it...although the foot is sometimes flexed so that the ball of the foot is hitting:

@ the combo: I guess you're right, but I'll try it when I get the chance to see if it works

that was cute but i don't see how much more of a damage that can do than if she was slapping a guy in the face.  that kick's power is coming only from the knee joint.  a good roundhouse should also incorporate the hips, and have more committment in the strikes.  i know she mentioned the hips at the end, but she's not using the hips at all the way she "teaches" it.

and i still don't understand how the fuck u can use the ball of ur foot to strike with a roundhouse.  either ur doing something completely different or wrong.... or ur getting zero power in ur strikes.

shit I posted the wrong link, heres the correct one:

with the ball of the foot it's just that with your foot flexed forward...it's the same thing really

I guess when you do it with the ball of the foot your technique becomes a bit rounder. I was just doing roundhouse kicks to the head, though, and I noticed that I actually use the instep...it's only for the middle kick the I use the ball, and even then only part of the time

but still a valid kick in shotokan style

that guy must have trained a long time.  he has a very good snap in his kicks.

but his stances piss me off.  not at all practical.  and he drops his arms everytime he throws his kicks.  can you say, "counterattack"?

and i still maintain my position that using the ball of ur foot to throw a round kick is impractical and lacks power.

yeah nobody spars like that anymore...he is kicking from a back stance...so old fashioned

I think his hands weren't up because he was just demonstrating a kick

but yeah we'll agree to disagree I guess

ok I found a good demonstration of power off a kook kick to a ball-of-the-foot roundhouse kick without even putting the foot down:

hmmm i guess i was proven wrong, to a certain degree.  it should also still be mentioned that wooden boards are ridiculously easy to break.  i've been breaking them since i was 7 years old.

I've only ever done aikido in martial arts and i only did it for a year which wasn't really long enough to become that good at it but it was definetley fun while it lasted, and although many people say that it doesn't really help that much in fights it is fun learning how to control peoples bodies the way they do so i would recommend it as a fun relaxed martial art.
