both mike and tito gave the correct answer, it's very very easy but you should come on it of course. it was very tricky for me when my father told me this one ;)

you have several fuses. you know that for one fuse it takes exactly one hour to burn completely. but it doesn't burn at a regular speed, for example the first half could be gone in 5 minutes and the rest would take 55 minutes. it's just random but all burn one hour. how can you measure exactly 45 minutes?

every time I read your riddles, I think like "that's impossible". But then when I see the answer, I think it's easier than I thought ;)

you light one fuse, then 15 minutes later you light another fuse. when the first fuse is burnt out, you know the other is at 45 minutes.

but im not sure this is right, because if you can measure 15 minutes you could anyway measure 45 :dontknow:

When the first one is all burnt, 1/2 hour has elapsed, so light the other edge of the second fuse which has half the time left. When you burn from both edges you reduce the time half the time, and since half the time of half the time=1/4 hour and as 1/4h+1/2h=3/4h=45minutes, you've managed the measuring.
