1966 & 1974 World Cups Were Fixed - Former FIFA President
Former FIFA President Joao Havelange has made some quite sensational, and potentially damaging, allegations by claiming that the 1966 and 1974 World Cups were fixed so that England and Germany would win respectively.


The 1966 World Cup held in England has been the centre of a number of conspiracy theories over the years. These include England’s quarter final victory over Argentina when the hosts won 1-0 after the South Americans had seen their captain Antonio Rattin controversially handed a straight red card for arguing with the referee.

It has been claimed that there was a plot for England to win the World Cup, and the referee from this game was German, while the official in Germany’s quarter final win over Uruguay was English. The controversy continued in the final with Geoff Hurst’s famous ‘was it over the line?’ goal.

Joao Havelange, who was FIFA President from 1974 until 1998 is certain to have further fuelled these conspiracy theories by openly stating that the 1966 and ’74 World Cups were fixed.

"In the three matches that the Brazilian national team played in 1966, of the three referees and six linesmen, seven were British and two were Germans," Havelange told Folha de Sao Paulo.

"Brazil went out, Pele ‘exited’ through injury [following some rough defensive play], and England and Germany entered into the final, just as the Englishman Sir Stanley Rous, who was the President of FIFA at the time, had wanted.

"In Germany in 1974 the same thing happened. During the Brazil-Holland match, the referee was German, we lost 2-0 and Germany won the title," said Havelange.

"We were the best in the world, and had the same team that had won the World Cup in 1962 in Chile and 1970 in Mexico, but it was planned for the host countries to win.”

World Cup hosts have been at the centre of many conspiracy claims over the year. In 1978 Argentina needed to beat Copa America holders Peru by four clear goals to reach the final ahead of Brazil. They won 6-0 but their were dark rumours that Peru, who had an Argentine-born goalkeeper, had thrown the game. Meanwhile in 2002, minnows South Korea were at the centre of similar claims as they finished fourth after seeing a host of dubious decisions go their way in the victories over Italy and Spain.

Its all over other sites as well as some TV stations. I always had a feeling 66 was rigged man. No really even when I talk with people from that era I always quiz them most of them say it seemed as if most referee calls where in favor of England. I had mentioned on here a long time ago that 66 was fixed but I was attacked by an English mob. 

What are your thoughts, I think this has some truth in it. Why would the guy come out and make up something on such a scale.

Everything in that article sounds like calls that are made in every tournament. There's always a controversial goal or red card.

If those two tournaments were fixed, then please tell me what 2002 was? If 66 and 74 are going to make news but 02 is not, then I don't give a shit about this news story.

as adi says it sounds like utter bullshit. and yes id say this even if it wasnt my country involved. many many things could be 'fixed' if based on the arguements used here. if you annalyse any WC where the hosts win, youll see many dubious decisions where the hosts are involved. does that mean its fixed? no, it means its a football match refereed by humans who fuck up and these decisions happen in any game. if the hosts arent involved, human error, if the hosts are, tounament fixing... is that what youre saying? because im sure there were many dubious happenings in the same WCs that just werent covered. everything is ad hoc, linking things afterwards that fit the facts to create a hypothesis that should in no way be believed in at face value. again, im not saying this because im english, i couldnt care less about our win (fake or not ;))

meh dont really care seeing as it as 42 and 46 yrs ago and even if it was proven that they were fixed, please tell me what would FIFA do? Just leave those 2 tournaments out of history saying they were "undecided"

The 02' fixings were about the messed up calls teams like Italy and Spain had when they played against Korea( the hosts of 02 WC along with Japan). I gotta agree that World Cup was one of the worst sporting tournaments in general, I had stayed home to watch the Italy vs Korea game and I shut off my tv because of how crappy the reffing and the game was, it takes a lot to make a 10 year old kid turn off a tv :'< The Spain vs Korea game was pretty bogus too, I don't like the idea of these kind of events being fixed but some of the ways these things go down makes you really wonder 

Edit: That being said I wouldn't mind seeing an African nation do well in a world cup... 2010 maybe ??!

lets be honest, noone likes england, (cough mostly out of jealousy) so everytime they actually do something (cough rarely) ppl try to play it down or take it away from them.
fixed i doubt it from back in 66, its nothing compared to modern sport. modern sport is a disgrace! so many games are rigged and fixed, and players cheat and are wanjkers.

For me the only controversy was Korea's win over Spain. Brazil had a great team, legitimately better than any other team in the tpurnament. The 3 R's were unstoppable, and they won.
