So, I've noticed that 9/10 self-defense videos on youtube are absolute garbage. Most of them will actually get you hurt if you follow their instruction. 1st video I will share is a joke, but they are using some techniques actually taught. lol
www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=TdxKWvc1fCUThese 2 videos are from a guy that has some martial arts background, but he really is just a top youtuber. Follow his advice, you will get into more fights and being using impractical techniques that if you get wrong, you're fucked.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=fRvTOyFBMyQThis video will guarantee you that the bully you just pissed off will sucker punch you and probably kick your ass. Never do this is unless you are very confident you can win this fight. You also have to think about legal issues afterwards which won't favor you if you match him for aggression. In fact, his 1st example which he says is wrong, is closer to being right as he definitely avoided the fight. Also, notice how when he gets aggressive to the other guy, he drops his hands and sticks his chin towards him. This is just asking to be punched right in the jaw. If anything, you should do similar to the 1st scenario, but have both hands up near your face like you are trying to plea for him to stop. You are actually preparing to either block or punch him if he gets overly aggressive. This is a common bouncer technique. If you see a bouncer ever put his hands on his chin when he's talking to you, calm down, he's preparing to punch you.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=h9ph7uJn0K8The actual technique in this video is fine. He also executes it fairly well, but it's obviously a simulated demonstration. The other guy is allowing him to execute the technique. I don't really know for sure whether he can pull it off in a real situation.
Now, for why this is bad. 99.999999% of youtubers that will watch this video have 0 martial arts experience. Attempting any self-defense technique without real training is extremely risky. The biggest problems with this technique is if you get this wrong, you will most likely be pulling your opponent on top of you for them to just ground and pound the shit out of you. Also, any self-defense technique where you are falling to your back is pretty dumb. In sport fights, you are on a padded mat, so it doesn't hurt much. In real life, it could be concrete, rocks, or any other hazardous surface to fall on. You could be inflicting significant damage to yourself. It's completely impractical in a self-defense situation.
The reason I'm posting this is I've noticed that the majority of videos of these types on Youtube are completely bogus. I understand it's no different than many other things. Most soccer tutorials are terrible too, but the consequences of fucking up a self-defense technique is far worse than a soccer technique. It could cause someone to get seriously hurt or even killed. I personally think that victims that thought these videos were legit should be able to sue the video maker for giving them poor advice.
I may start a good self-defense videos and techniques thread later, but my only real advice is get to a real gym. There is no substitute. Tutorials can be a good reference for ideas, but they are pretty much useless without the real training.
