« on: Jul 12, 2012, 09:09: PM »
I have made a facebook group for the BF Official Comp which I will be updating all the latest information and details on there. It would be great for you to join if you are interested in participating in this competition so I can get a good grasp on the numbers. Please share to anyone who you think would be interested in joining the competition too.

Thanks, Yen!  I've added a poll to the group and posted an update on the BF page.

Everyone, please add your self to the group and invite others.  We want this group to have 100+ people.

I got one question, none of the 3 judges has the 'new generation' style, such as clutches and catches and those kinda tricks and blocks etc. so it won't be fair to the freestylers doing this style!
How about you get a judge like Schopf or Cleym etc.

3 people is an odd number, so this prevents ties. There's always gonna be someone that's not happy, so I think you'll just be left out.

I think 5 is an odd number too and it prevents ties.
1. Uppers
2. Lowers
3. SitDowns
4. Blocks
5. Creativity

Why change it? There will always be someone unhappy. Also, creativity is not a style of freestyle. You can be creative in every area of freestyle. I also don't think the judges are supposed to only judge their particular area. 3 is a much more feasible number as there doesn't have to be as much communication to make sure all scores are in. Block tricks are considered lowers as well.

In defense of my statement, I'm not begging Mr. Woo to be added to the judging list to have an oldschool freestyler to judge. It would only be fair by your logic.

This is most likely the 3 areas that will be judged; style, technical and variation.
How can you say JK is not creative?
I am also a block freestyler and what you said about clutches, catches and creativity fit under style and variation.
The freestylers you named would make great judges but I can't satisfy everyone's request; imagine every competitor requesting for a different judge, it would be chaos so I went with my own instinct.
The judges will judge all aspects and areas of the video and to me, 3 judges provide more opinion instead of just one judge which gives more opportunities for the competitors just like you said, so one judge won't be bias according to his style.
You don't consider blocks lowers? Tbh I would be pissed off if someone told me that what I was doing wasn't lowers. Blocks is just a sub category of lowers; just another form of lowers.

How are you going to judge lowers, uppers and sits as an individual criteria without guidelines? For example, is it going to be judged by how difficult your lowers tricks are or by how stylish your lowers are?
What about people that don't do blocks? Will they get 0?

Finally, when you say judge creativity.. Do you mean executing new tricks or just creative variation (in which case, falls under variety). If it's by new tricks, then blocks, clutches catches wouldn't be creativity and everyone would get a low score for that field unless someone executes a trick never to be seen before. Variation on the other hand, covers blocks, clutches and catches into consideration which I think is what you are trying to say.

I tried my best so that every style can be judged fairly and not be bias towards one particular style.
Hope you understand. Sorry for the long post.

Overall, I like your judging picks Yen. I honestly think we shouldn't even worry about the judges picking certain aspects to judge. Just have them make straight up votes on which videos they think are better. This just makes it easier to understand why certain videos get higher scores.

People need to understand that lowers just means tricks done with the feet and legs while the ball is in the air. Most freestylers can't distinguish the difference between lowers and lower(atw variations and combos). Yes, they are the most common version of lowers, but it's not everything in lowers.

We have to face the facts that judging freestyle is almost entirely based on opinions. We all have different opinions on what freestyle is entertaining to watch and technically more difficult. Normally, we will all disagree on many different things. Just learn to deal with it.

That's a good idea too but I would still have them base their votes with those 3 criteria in consideration so it doesn't become purely bias on style.

Having the 3 criteria wouldn't change that much if any. Also, I'd change style to execution. Style by the proper definition would have the judge pick which type or style of freestyle he likes better to give higher votes. Execution I believe is what you actually mean. Execution will be judged on how clean all the tricks and combos are done.

To me, style is a bit more than that. Of course, to have a good style you need good execution but style shows the uniqueness of the styler's execution and performance. Since judging is pretty much based on opinions, I think style works better than execution because judging also involves the judges' personal view and favourtism but it will not be bias as there are 3 judges.
