Title: soccer strategy
Post by: TheGodEmperor on Mar 31, 2008, 12:18: PM
sooo...I think this would be interesting since we have alot of experienced players here (I'm looking at you Adi). I myself am an adherent to the style of play introduced bu Cruyff called Total Football (you might have guessed) where evryone plays at virtually every position, covering for each other and stuff, so that the game becomes very elastic. I hate the Catenaccio.

this staretagy could cause confusion when you face a stable and formed team

no because it just allows the defence to support the offense and make overlapping rune, and the offence to drop back and play defence after a defender has made a run or taken the ball up himself

yeah but a stable and organised defence and easily handle runs and then a huge counter attack can be launched

catenaccio man here, I see   yeah...small runs and short passes cant be stopped every time.

what the hell is catenaccio. all you have to do is follow a run. and its not like you can score every chance you get.

i love making stratergies and finding problems with teams.

catenaccio is how italians (used to) play football. make a goal and defend it.
personally i like a 4-3-1-2 where the two strikers in the front are fast and technical, the 1 person is like a attacking midfielder (gives passes close to the goal or shoots from distance) the 3 are players that help defending and also build the attack (i dont know how to say that exactly in english) they give distance passes to the persons in the front at the right moment so they have much space or they start a combination (1-2-tje in dutch) with the attacking midfielder and help him. the 4 remainder 4 are defenders. when the opponent is easy one or two of them can move on to the 3 before them to keep the pressure on the other half

this is how i would like to see football. i really think it can work properly if you know who to place where
Title: Re: soccer strategy
Post by: moby on Apr 03, 2008, 12:51: AM
this is a problem only moby can solve.

for your stategy o would play wing football in a 4-3-3 formation. i would use fast wingers and a good cherry picker or finisher like van nistelrooy in the middle. for the midfield i would have two on each side supporting the strickers and a defensive midfielder in the middle stopping your attacking midfielder from making any passes. the defender know there jobs.

problem solved

Title: Re: soccer strategy

I'm a 4-3-3 man myself....I like the two wingers, 1 striker, 1 centre mid, 2 outside mid formation because it allows for triangulation at the midfield all the way up to where the striker is. This means that the mids can control the ball and control the midfield, and then they have 3 options: long ball to striker, or thruballs to the wingers. Either way, once they get the ball to the forwards, there is triangulation near the 18 between the wingers and the striker, and the wingers and the mids.

i personaly like 4-1-2-1-2.

     .   .

    .     .
       .
.   .    .  .

just like that

two strickers and a attacking midfielder to set them up to centre midfielders to control the midfield. a defensive midfielder to help the defence and the usual defence.

I myself am an adherent to the style of play introduced bu Cruyff called Total Football (you might have guessed) where evryone plays at virtually every position, covering for each other and stuff, so that the game becomes very elastic.

Total Football is technically the ideal formation but it's extremely hard to pull off successfully. You need to have well rounded players who are smart and able to play both in attack and defense. It's pretty tough to find such players nowadays who can compete with other world class players.

Of course every team has their own tactic to fit the type of players available to them. Personally, I like playing something like this:

--------x--------
x----x----x----x
--------x--------
x----x----x----x

... with the wingers pushing up high on the full backs and one of the two center mids having a bit more attacking freedom to support the striker.

thats actually surprisingly cunning, although I like my formation better because it promotes triangulation and total football

I am playing with 4 in a diamond formation:

                                       stopper
      left fullback                                            right fullback

I'd just withdraw my outside mids a bit and use my center mid in more of a roving role (covering more territory). Then I'd use the center mid as a connecting piece with the outside mids and the wingers/striker. This would neutralize your wing atack, and not hurt my attack much at all.

I was thinking the same thing. I always like to see 'Dinho in a central role because he will have both sides of the field to use and his options will open up, giving him more room to work that magic from 05/06. So I'd move Inzaghi (maybe) back a bit, and put pirlo on the right. I know its unorthodox, but I really think that Ronaldinho should play center mid.

its just not right seeing that gilardinho is a typical centre foward and isn't much of a winger and isn't a wide players + Ronaldo who could play a bit wide but isn't as effective + Inzaghi isn't gonna get good crosses from those two they are all goal poachers but not all at once it just too hard for them to work like that
plus what happens to Gattuso
Title: Re: soccer strategy
Post by: moby on Apr 14, 2008, 09:17: PM
i would use a rotational policy.

  pato                 ronaldo

             emerson

Title: Re: soccer strategy

I wouldnt start Ronaldo...he doesnt have the stamina anymore. And yes I'd put pato as striker, and Ronaldinho as a withdrawn striker. I still want him in the middle. That would allow Pirlo to play center mid, and kaka + someone else to play on the outside
Title: Re: soccer strategy
Post by: moby on Apr 15, 2008, 09:11: PM

dont you hate it when coaches make bad tactical changes. example when inter where losing to liverpool instead of bringing in a cherrypicking stricker he brange in cruz. and in the first leg stankovic was playing terrible. he could have brang in figo because inter needed somebody to set up the strickers in the match

i think Man U will be more defensive seeing they have a crunch match against Chelsea and then the second leg all in 7 days
i think Barca have nothing to play for in the La Liga and will come out with the finger on their trigger and go all out
in all i think the game will finish 0-0 or 1-1, 2 goal will be scored max maybe by one team or 1 each

anyhow...any critiques of Man U's strategy? I predicted this (see earlier posts) but not to this degree. When I said defensive mids, I didnt mean playing as glorified stoppers/fullbacks! What was SAF thinking, playing to draw?! As I said before, Barca needs to make more of the weaving near post-center-far post runs so that they do not keep on playing the ball along the outside of the 18, and finally put a successful ball across the goal.

I would have liked to have seen Anderson or Hargreaves in the center with Scholes and Carrick.  Park on left; Rooney on right; Tevez to the bench.  You don't go into the Camp Nou and have a track meet.

Barcelona 4–0 Manchester United

I'm pretty sure that was the scoreline the last time United went to the Camp Nou to play against Barcelona.  I'd say that this is an improvement.

no they dont Bro, the away goal rule is because its harder for the visitors to play in the house of another team, picture this:

Sao paulo playing against man united in old trafford, the house and visitor goal rule are good rules and should stay that way

i think in my opinion the the knockout stages and etc should be played in a neutral venue like eg. one country host the toroment.

back to tactics. what players do you like to play more if you were a coach.

either strong attackers that are slow or fast attackers that weak.

technical in what meaning? if its in like dribbles and stuff like that, then, you cant be a good dribblers without speed, im not the fastest player in the world, but i have a MEAN 20 mts sprint, fastest in my team  but i cant keep up a run like that for a long time

Zidane was an extremely technical player, but it wasn't neccesarily his dribbling that defined him as a technical player.

I was thinking more along the lines of a Paul Scholes, Teddy Sheringham, etc.

Ilike technical players, but I also require players who can move and play both ends. And the key to a good offence isn't necessarily the speed/skill of every single player ( as long as they are all reasonably skilled/fast), it's the way they work together, and the quality of runs/passes that they make, and how well they move into space and release the ball.

for the second leg of the Man U v Barca
i think AF has risked the EPL for the champions league but i believe it will come back to haunt him cause Barca will go all out with no other silverware for them beside this.
i'm expecting a hot game that'll finish 2-1 to Barca with the same team as last week but the only difference will be United will defend less and pay

Barca gave it all they had last game. If SAF decides to play offence, and puts Rooney at striker, then the ball posession will be more even because man U will keep it longer. Instead of having 10 men behind the ball, they'll have 8-9. If Barca can penetrate and move more in the box and run to the posts, then it is without a doubt their game because they have the best ability to KEEP the ball out of any club in the world. If Man U wants to win this, they will have to take a lot of fastbreaks with Ronaldo and Rooney, and hope to catch Barca's defence flatfooted so that they can put a few in the net.

agreed but with Vidic out and some other absences in defense it just might be enough for Henry and Co. to hit the back of the net and you did see the impact Henry had when he came on just imagine what he can do when he starts off

thats true. He had one laser shot. But then again, man U have cristiano Ronaldo, who can take apart a defence single handedly if need be. Both teams are stacked, so I think it comes out to which style comes out triumphant. Without SAF's crap tactics of last leg, man U will play their style, so the game will amount to a clash of styles. Personally, I would like to see more crosses from Barca (my style is short passes then a cross, or overlapping runs down the side then a cross), and I would like to see Man U cut down on the shit through balls and take more short passes.

you only have a budget to buy one star player. either a stricker, midfeilder or defender.

I wouldn't change formation mid-game, Thats stupid. I'd just tell my wingers to play defensively, and push my fullbacks up to cover the opposing wingers' runs from the get-go. Then I'd move a central midfield back to a sweeping position infront of the stopper.

I stick with my plan...mind you...any team I coach would be very strong down the wings, so I wouldn't have that problem. I'd always play 4-3-3 with the stopper pushed up to right behind the center mid, and then have right mid and right wing on the right, and left mid and left wing on the left...and then a striker making a run towards the goal. That allows for very strong wing game, which spreads the ball out, and it also gives me more cross/switch options so that midfielders don't have to play the ball into traffic.

The defense in a diamond formation? OH NO! I suppose you would play a "stopper" hahahaha. Ok, please tell me by your formation you mean a 3-4-3 with 3 center backs, 4 in midfield and 3 up front. Because if you actually mean playing one center back with two full backs and a player in front of them, then that is a terrible idea and for that to be in response to the mother of all formations is laughable. Name one team in the entire world that plays that formation and I'll buy you a cookie.

TheKingNut....what a legend

P.S Moby, you are a good lad. The 4-4-2 diamond is a good formation. It actually is a formation used by human beings in the world of soccer unlike totallfootball's which is a formation he must have come up with on FIFA 08 or something.

Title: Re: soccer strategy
Post by: TheGodEmperor on May 18, 2008, 02:26: AM
dont be decieved because the diamond looks so wide and long...its the same as a 4 defense line, except with one central defender playing slightly ahead of the other. Its been unclear because of the limitations of using dots on a computer screen to illustrate my point. And I like having outside players so that teams can switch the ball alot and play a wide game. I'd use the central midfielder mainly as a connecting piece, although they should make runs through the middle to pick up a cross and back up the striker. I see what you all mean by the defense being easy to penerate, but the solution to that would be to move the outside mids in when they play defense so that the stopper has more support. The wingers would come back a bit too and help control the midfield (ie covering the other team) when the ball is not in our possession. All the teams I've been on play a 4-4-2 formation, except I've noticed that it encourages a lob-and-run style of game, so I think that a 4-3-3 formation would help to bring the ball wide again. That way, the striker would not be going by himself up the middle and waiting for people to overlap him, he'd have two wingers who are always pretty well alongside him so that they can easily overlap him if need be and create triangulation. If anyone sees flaws, point them out please....maybe I could learn something.

I just don't see this formation being sound enough defensively to be heralded as a great formation that can be used to start a game. Maybe it could be used when chasing a game but it seems a team would get too exposed in the middle of the park and there would be confusion at the back in terms of who would pick up who

I wrote this on the Spain Euro 08 thread too......

What you are not seeing though is that this formation would not be good for a winger. The full backs would be forced into playing too narrow, making it very hard to play out. In my personal opinion this sort of shape would encourage a more direct style. There are not enough bodies in midfield to pop it around. If the midfield played tight then maybe I could see the team getting hold of it in there but I just don't think a team could play out in this shape.

thats a very good point. at our school we play the diond formation and we play out wide alot. almost all our goals came from the wings in our last match.

btw if TF10 you formation was attacked from the wings it could maybe get the two central defenders out of position. then the winger could center it and the attacking midfeilder could rip one in.

yeah you're right there, actually. I've played with this formation alot, and found that it makes for a great crossing game. Since the cross is the best aspect of my game as a player, I can see how many chances it creates. Therefore, if I have a good crosser on my team, I would definitely use this formation. The 4-4-2 doesn't use the corners as much because the wingers are more pulled back. However, I think Moby's formation would also work well in that respect. I understand the weaknesses of the formation. I would need really fit wingers (the ones further up the field) so they could pressure the ball back past the midfield (when we dont have the ball). Then the outside mids would push in to center and support the stopper while the fullbacks would push farther out to scoop the ball off the opposing wingers if our wingers have let people through. The sweeper, of course, would sweep balls away frow across the net and give the fullbacks an angle of support from behind.

Totalfootball, in all honesty I think you are complicating things far too much. The basis of most teams is a solid, straight back four. Occasionally a back three can work but how often do you see a team start with three center backs in football today? Hardly ever. Almost all teams play a traditional back four, with full backs as the main outlets with which to play through.

the sweeper would have to do more running, but the good thing about the sweep-stop formation is that the fullbacks have support both in front and behind them.

But teams that play with pace and have strikers with good movement and play off the shoulder would kill it
Title: Re: soccer strategy
Post by: TheGodEmperor on May 19, 2008, 01:04: PM
thats barring the fact that if the stopper sees fit, he can drop back and lay along side the sweeper. I like an elastic formation with lots of room for quick positional transitions etc
Title: Re: soccer strategy
Post by: TheKingNut on May 19, 2008, 01:13: PM
This shape in defense could work if played with wing backs and but not with the way the midfield is lined up. I fully understand the player in front of the the back three dropping in and becoming a center half but this is how I see it working:

This would be my revised formation:

                                GK

                                CB
                          CB        CB

                                DM

WB/RM        CM                  CM           WB/LM

                      ST              ST

If the ball went wide when defending then the CB from that side could go across and the DM (stopper) could fill in the hole thus creating a back four when without the ball. This would take the pressure off the wing backs and allow them to play, for the most part, as wide mids with little defensive duties.

Post by: TheGodEmperor on May 19, 2008, 01:15: PM
you just made it a 4-4-2 which would only work in my books if the strikers could also play as wingers and collect balls along the side (at least for the wide style of game that I like)

I am a risk-taker, and I would play offside trap anyways. I know its dangerous, but I would have alot of players in the other team's half pressuring he ball, with the stopper behind them for support

Quick question: is it better to pressure the ball individually with the entire team pressing, or playing zone and waiting for your moments when the ball is vulnerable?
Title: Re: soccer strategy
Post by: Sule on Aug 29, 2008, 04:29: PM
with TF10's idea of a sweeper and stop you would need one hell of a defender ( id take Ferdinand) to control the entire team and be a leader

3 guys in the back is only used when marking man-to-man and not zonal. with 3 in the back everything becomes much tighter and static and the 3 CB's must be aware of what the other player is trying to do at all times

i think your prayers have been answered
Mikel is killing it you should've seen this show i was watching the performance he put out this season and the clips of his possession in the united game was brilliant
now i know why Chelsea had the transfer war with United for him
the next Makelele and maybe even better
Title: Re: soccer strategy
Post by: moby on Sep 23, 2008, 09:06: PM
i had a feeling he would have done great, maybe at a different club but he just seemed to be a good player.

@TF10: i think it would be better to apply pressure by marking out any other player the person can pass to, then that player with the ball is more likely to make a mistake becuase every player he looks at has an opponet on him
Title: Re: soccer strategy
Post by: Tito on Sep 23, 2008, 09:29: PM

the other one leaves too much space for the opponents

i agree zone is better

i think u mean other way around
zonal is when u give the players a bit of space until he gets the ball then ur on his ass, man-to-man on the other hand is where it is very tight throughout the field and if u dont know where your player is or u arent close to him you're screwed basically

ive played both and i think i farely adept at both and can defend both ways

meh really depends on how you want to play the game
Title: Re: soccer strategy
Post by: moby on Sep 24, 2008, 05:14: PM
oh i get it now,

i've always play zonal, like what sule said give the person with the ball assurity he can pass and when he does i try put pressure on him so he can make a mistake,

but that defence can get fucked up with one - two passes

just wanted to bring this thread back

Boys what league is the most tactical and skillful that you would most like to wacth?

In my opinion its the Seria A. After watching most of the recent games from EPL, La Liga and Seria A i have come to the conclusion that Seria A is best on the eye.
EPL game are just too long balled and predictable after the first 10 minutes you can guess the winner and in some occasion the score too.
La Liga is beautiful football the swift passes, slick one-twos and dribbling is outrageous.
But there is some thing about the Seria A thats is amazing about it. Don't might be the crowds atmosphere, the passion or the determination of all the team and heart of the lower caliber ones.

What do yous think?

I'd say la liga for the reasons you stated. Serie A definitely has some nice football, but its not as free flowing and flair-conducive as la Liga is. In La Liga, EVERY team plays beautifully.

if yall like watching the italian league that much, you need to watch the argentine league. yes south american leagues are not quite up to par with the european leagues anymore, but the argentine league is probably the most beautiful to the eye still. the league is still a very high level despite slight european superiority.  it is one of the most technical leagues i've ever watched. it is mainly short and quick passing, and teams rarely play defensively. the league is also extremely high scoring compared to european league. they have the best atmosphere in the world at their stadiums. fans sing songs for the entire match. you also get a chance to see many of the european stars of the future here.

Very true i watch highlights when i can the south american leagues are crazy with the skills its kind of like street football with rules. And yes they do produce the star of the future that a point i had several weeks ago about how the south american team are great because they produce alot of talent and their leagues are filled with player of their nationality and the more they sell the more they produce.

so i totally agree with you that their league is best in game play too bad they don't show much of the games too.

the french league is quite fun to watch. people just get caught up in the fact that these leagues aren't always as good as the biggest leagues. many leagues like portugal, holland, brasil, colombia, and my favorite argentina are just as fun to watch, because of the way they play.  many times the best leagues are the best because their defenses are stronger which causes for less good attacking football.  these leagues i mentioned are much more open, and have much better open attacking football which is fun to watch.

the argentinian league is very very good in football aspects. watching some of the matches on SBS you just think where would they reach in the champs league.

but here we are talking about strategy,

in an interview with mourinho he stated that coach a italian team is nothing like others. he changed tactics around four times in one game and the torino coach changed to stop his tactics, this just shows.

Title: Re: soccer strategy

Serie A has the most effective tactics but the also the most boring tactics.

Even Mourinho has commented that Italy is all about tactics. He has to make 4-5 major tactical changes to his line up throughout one game.

Tito, do you even watch the English league? I'm sure if we posted a poll on here, most people would say the English league is the most entertaining.
Title: Re: soccer strategy
Post by: Sule on Dec 03, 2008, 10:32: AM
the problem with the poll  is that the premier league is the most televised in the world so most people dont have another league to compare it to.The only reason for this is that it has the most money, so they buy the big players.

the leagues that you like/watch are all down to what type of football you like.

Non-stop running: England
Defensive counter-attacks: Italy
Free-flowing football, yet still fast paced in the final third: Holland/Spain
Blend of attacking and defensive football: Germany

i dont watch enough of any other leagues to make any real conclusion on the style of play but that pretty much sums it up
Title: Re: soccer strategy

I'Tito, do you even watch the English league?
yes about 7 live game each week

the real question is, do you watch the other leagues?

I'm sure if we posted a poll on here, most people would say the English league is the most entertaining.
As Sule said its the most televised and most common.
Now the argument is not whether it is the most watched but is it the most skillful and entertaining league.
As i said i watch the EPL every week not cause i choose to but its that or no football at all. I also watch some live Seria A and La Liga games but like 1 Seria A and 2 La Liga games each week and obviuosly highlights of other league so you can't say i'm in a position to not comment on this.

I respect your opinion but to me EPL isn't the most exciting league.
Title: Re: soccer strategy
Post by: Sule on Dec 03, 2008, 03:19: PM
EPL being the most exciting is at times a misconception of whats going on

alot of running, alot of hard work. There arent as many, barely even, midfield generals who dictate the game in England. Its more about hard work in the EPL rather than talent and skill (SOMETIMES). The game isnt track, if you know what i mean

Title: Re: soccer strategy
Post by: ^_^ on Dec 04, 2008, 05:25: PM
EPL is aight; i mean, who wouldn't like to watch Arsenal play Manchester; it always makes a good game. But seriously, looking outside the top teams, sitting down to watch Wigan v Sunderland is rather  :bang:

Why? Because they are the definition of the English game; boring, long ball, "work ethic" type soccer that results in boredom and players with no skill running around and tackling mindlessly. What makes the EPL exciting can be summed up in 2 words:
1) Arsenal
2) Scolari

Everything else is shitty. I would much rather watch Spanish teams like Getafe or Zaragoza, because they are filled with skillful talented players that are very passionate about playing a more skill oriented game; bottom line, La Liga is more exciting overall.

Title: Re: soccer strategy
Post by: ^_^ on Dec 06, 2008, 04:51: AM
i think transitioning into the EPL is easier than transitioning into La Liga; Robinho and Torres have found settling in quite easy (those who say Robinho hasn't done much, look at the stats; he's 3rd in scoring with 8 goals tied with ronaldo). but i think if you stick frank lampard on barcelona he'd be clueless.

learning how to play a more direct style of soccer is easier than learning how to play a more skill oriented style; that's why i admire wenger because he just knows exactly what type of player will fit into his skill oriented team; nasri, denilson, adebayor, etc.

btw borg is here i saw that nigga posting in the freestyle section.
