Ahahaha....

But seriously....I need some help with SOH CAH TOA... its that sin, cos tan thing that u use with triangles...I am completely clueless as to how it works and the entire point of it..

But seriously....I need some help with SOH CAH TOA... its that sin, cos tan thing that u use with triangles...I am completely clueless as to how it works and the entire point of it..

This is easy, its basically what you said, the three sin, cos and tan rules. Its used when finding the length of an angle or side on a right angled triangle.

SOH = opposite/hypotenuse
CAH = adjacent/hypotenuse
TOA = opposite/adjacent

The opposite side is the side opposite of the angle given or the angle you need to find (not the right angle). Adjacent is the side next to the angle given or the angle you have to find. And the hypotenuse is the longest side or the side opposite of the right angle.

When using  SOH CAH TOA to find the length of a side:

This is hard cuz i cant demonstrate with triangles, but il try my best.

Example 1
Say if the angle give is 46 degrees. You are given the hypotenuse which is 24m and you are trying to find the opposite.

You will make an equation which will look like this:

sin 46 = opposite/24m

therefore

opposite = sin 46 x 24

It should = 17.26m

Note: You use the sin rule because you are given the hypotenuse, and you are trying to find the opposite (SOH = opposite/hypotenuse) If you were trying to find the adjacent than it would be the cos rule. And so on...

Using SOH CAH TOA to find an angle

Basically its same thing, except with a few extra calculations.

Example 2

We will use the same example as above except the angle is not known.

So we use the SOH, where x is the unknown angle.

sin x = 17.26/24

        = 0.7193398

The extra calculation is this part:

Now from here im using my calculater, it may be different from yours, but since i dont know yours il do it how i do it with mine.

For finding the size of an angle from here you go:

[SHIFT][SIN] 0.7193398

Than you press the equal button.

You should get 46 degrees. Which confirms with the first example we used. Same thing goes with tan and cos when finding the angle.

Forgive me if im off, havnt used SOH CAH TOA for a long time.
