that (the food) was a by-product.  it was a genuine peace keeping mission.  (not that this peace-keeping mission didn't necessarily benefit us)

Their true intentions are questionable, I've never seen so many people die on a peace keeping mission. If it was truly a peace keeping mission it should have never turned out the way it did. They wanted to get rid of Aidiid at the end of the day dude was too slick for them.

In the first Gulf war America was at war with Sadaam to begin with, next thing you know after the Shaia Militia where gainig power and nearly over threw Sadaam. He even moved to Jordan, my friends father who was in the Militia told me that American Helicopters came in and aided Sadaam to crush them (fuck what anyone heard this guy was present at the scene).   Now if America wanted to defeat Sadaam why would they aid him? because hes a fucking puppet. Americas real intentions are never clear.

"keeping unrest to a minimum" was american foreign policy during the 90s.  we figured out afterwards that there was really no neutral intervention.  mogadishu was a "tactical success" for the us, but a strategic disaster.

it was a balance of power play.  sadaam was pretty "useful" for a long while.  if american really wanted to defeat sadaam, we wouldn't have stopped at the border.  the gulf war never should have happened.

the same can be said for almost any nation.  we'll only know 1/10 of what is to know about anything.  sucks, but the truth is probably in between the best and worst interpretations.  the bush administration was especially bad at this.
