Capello names provisional 30-man England squad

Provisional England squad for the friendly against Switzerland on February 6:

Carson (Aston Villa), James (Portsmouth), Kirkland (Wigan); Bridge (Chelsea), Brown (Manchester United), A Cole (Chelsea), C Davies (Aston Villa), Ferdinand (Manchester United) G Johnson (Portsmouth), King (Tottenham), Lescott (Everton), Richards (Manchester City), Shorey (Reading), Upson (West Ham), Woodgate (Tottenham); Barry (Aston Villa), Bentley (Blackburn), Carrick (Manchester United), J Cole (Chelsea), Downing (Middlesbrough), Gerrard (Liverpool), Hargreaves (Manchester United), Jenas (Tottenham), Wright-Phillips (Chelsea), Young (Aston Villa); Agbonlahor (Aston Villa), Crouch (Liverpool), Heskey (Wigan), Owen (Newcastle), Rooney (Manchester United).

No Robinson in goal and no Beckham. Interesting pick with Curtis Davies.

Capello said: 'I know there has been a lot of discussion about David Beckham. The reason that David is not in the squad is because he has not had any real match practice since playing in November.
beckham has been trying with arsenal during the mls off-season to stay fit, and so when beckham heard the disappointing news he quickly came back to the united states cancelling a visit he had with a charity event that he was planned to attend...he is pissed and he has a right to i feel. capello says he wants to see how beckham does in march when the mls starts back up, beckham will be called up sooner or later to the squad just to get that 100th cap and so this seems to be prolonging it

Yeah, Beckham is the leader on this time.

Good to see Robinson go, James is way better.

Haha sometimes I really wonder how you come up with these conclusions. Beckham was one of the few players that actually performed for the national team when selected. He's still good.

thanks tito

i just think beckhams level of football has dropped over the past few years.

compare him when he was playing with man utd and the first few seasons at real madrid and now. i think he can find better players then him.

as much as i hate to say beckham was a pretty good player. his crosses and lobs were excellent. but now i dont see him doing that at all. maybe just a few good freekicks here and there

i reckon beckham is a good sub.
he should have been name because you mite need a player like him in the match.
i will agree with moby that beckham is not the player he was.capello made the right decision, most managers would have beckham in the squad so he could achieve his century.he mite have been good on the bench but then again u could see where capello is coming from.

i agree with what they said in the bbc studio. shouldve given becks his 100th cap n let him retire. i think although he has performed for his country when really no1 else has, hes not as good as lennon and bently who are getting better very rapidly and will soon overtake him.

and jcole was one of the few players who played well in our dismal first half, as per usual. lay off him.
