To warm up a little, let's start with a smaller one. It doesn't mean that it is easy though.

Macca and Tom are making trouble.
The two famous freestylers Macca and Tom Folan were standing at a fixed position, where they put a red flag in the ground. The flag is 2 meters high in total. Macca decided to go 5 meters south from his initial position, then he went 3 meters back north. When he looked his friend, he told him to mesure the distance from his actual position towards the initial position (where the flag stands). Tom mesured 4 meters.
How is this possible? Where are they?

If you mean south direction as in a one-dimensional direction, there could be change in height that has no effect on the north/south distance.

No, because Tom mesures the distance towards the flag, which hasn't moved.

If he's 5 meter away from the south pole, he'll be standing on the south pole when done. If you go north from the south pole you can go to whatever direction you wan't.
Macca decides he want's to create a triangle with one right angl. The distance from the flag (x) and the 3 m north are the short sides, whereas the 5 meter is the long side.

x^2=5^2-3^2
x^2=16
x=4

He's 5 meters away from the south pole.
