Graphing Help
« on: Jan 22, 2008, 04:41: PM »
I couldnt find the homework help thread, so il start one for my question

Say you have a table with two columns, how do you know which column goes on which axes when drawing a line graph from the table

If its mathematical, then the column labelled x will go on the x axis, and y on the y axis?
If it's not, then you just your common sense and see which is most suitable I would of said, be more specific?

as finny said, the x axis is the horizontal line and the y axis and is vertical....with more complexed data, put the independant data on x axis and the dependent data on the y axis. the dependent data is based up on the independent ones, so if x changes y will occur....

Time is an example of an independent variable.

Just remember this:

the x axis is the horizontal line and the y axis and is vertical

no i know that like x and y axes, but i dont get which colomn from the table should go on which axes on the graph

put the independant data on x axis and the dependent data on the y axis. the dependent data is based up on the independent ones, so if x changes y will occur....

what did you mean by that

the two things on my table include "temperature" and "growth in mm/hr"

ok, with these two categories, i would say that the temperature is the independent variable becuase as the temperature changes, whatever is growing will change to...it is dependent on the temperature, while the other way around, whatever is growing wont affect the temperature

ahhh so temperature being the independant one, goes on the x axis

I've never seen temperature go on the x axis, that seems so weird?

well if the plants growth is dependant on the temperature, wouldnt that make the growth go on the y axis and temp on the x, like lilmaniac explained  :dontknow:

you should put temp on the x-axis like the others said, but you have to grow the plant at different temperatures then, to compare the results, and use more then one plant for each temperature (to isolate failing plants) i have biology too ;)
