In this thread: somebody who doesn't know how to correctly differentiate between a semi-colon and a colon.
What do you mean, isn't a semi-colon acceptable in this case since they're joined?

no - due to the nature of the statement that follows it a colon/hyphen would be necessary as there is no direct relationship between the 'in this thread' and the statement that follows. After the 'in this thread' literally any statement could follow and therefore a semi colon is incorrect!
