Aliens Man!
« on: Mar 15, 2011, 05:05: AM »
Does anyone else believe there's intelligent life out there?
The universe is big as fuck, there's no way we're the only ones out there....

I will show picture I draw in paint of what Aliens look like.

hahaha, but seriously, do you think there's something else out there?
If the universe is constantly expanding *like some scientist claim* there has to be another form of life out there. They say earth is a rare planet (because of the conditions surrounding it. e.g weather/water/ozone/etc.) But does anyone else think a species could adapt to a different type of weather? Example being: a species being able to survive -555 Celsius.

I rekon there has to be. If there isn't..that just defies all odds.

the universe IS constantly expanding. we know this cuz shit keeps flying away further and further.

earth is a rare planet that we know of.  but considering the ridiculous number of galaxies and stars, and the potential for rocky planets orbiting those stars, along with the notion that life elsewhere doesn't need to work exactly like life on earth does and might require a completely different set of circumstances to arise and survive... also considering that many moons orbiting planets are just as likely candidates for supporting life as far away planets in diff solar systems and galaxies...

hawking thinks if life spontaneously happened here, it can happen elsewhere.  it's a good possibility but "intelligent" life is another matter.  also to classify what "intelligent life" is exactly is debateable.  measuring "intelligence" is also a difficult thing to do, especially if life in other places in the universe don't obey the same laws/conditions for life as on earth.

There has to be other life, since the universe is constantly expanding (thanks for clearing that up) the. There are endless possibilities for another "earth" like situation to happen. How fast does the universe expand?

Interesting question. If you look at the number of stars on the sky some night and count them, you'll get the little bit of how many star systems that can actually exist in the universe. It's that big, and even bigger. We don't even know where the universe begins or ends, may not even have such a thing.
Now if you consider a very small percentage, like 0.0000000000001 percent of the universe for example, that life may exist on another planet (after all, life exist here on Earth!), now multiply that percent with infinity (how big the universe is) and what will you get? Infinity is the answer. That's the simple calculation that basically says that if there's even a 1 per a billion chance that another planet can have life, the size of the universe is so big that even that small percentage becomes significant, in fact there will be infinite cases of other planets having life. It's just because the universe is so big, and the distance between planets are huge, we don't often see or speak with life forms from other planets - we simply don't have the technology to go that far that fast.
So yes I do believe we're not the only guys here in the universe. But an alien life form may have an entirely different way of life than us. Their environment may be intolerable to us. They may have genetic materials (DNA, RNA for Earthly equivalents) made up of 20 different bases (rather than just A,T(U),C, and G) and linked together by backbone made of Arsenic instead of Phosphorus. Who knows? We simply is too small compared to the universe.

I just want to show my nerdiness. The lowest possible temperature is -273.15 degrees Celsius. "The lowest possible temperature is defined as the point at which all atomic motion ceases." Just wanted to let you know.

God this thread just continues to fuck me,
Thanks for all the well thought out responses though (not sarcasm.) I've always wondered since I was a kid where other life was, intelligent or not, I've always wanted to see the day where Human met another species from a different planet.

Who knows? We simply is too small compared to the universe.

so ur saying if there's one chance in a billion that there will be infinite cases because the universe is infinite?  firstly, we have no idea how big the fuckin universe is.  it could have a limit, it could go on forever, it could wrap around in on itself, etc. etc.  all we kno about right now is the observable universe, which does have its limits (hence "observable" universe).

and yea life could be completely different, or in fact chances are, most likely will be totally different to life on earth.  then how will we know if it's "life" when we find it?  how will we know if it's "intelligent" life?  would it even at all be possible to communicate with them?  and then of course, would it even matter because chances are most likely that they're just way too fuckin far away (as you pointed out).

all we know for sure is, that if there is life, no matter where, how sparse, how far, or how intelligent, as far as we know they have the same limitations as us to obey the same laws of physics.
