Torn Hamstring
« on: Feb 15, 2011, 02:39: PM »
I tore my hamstring playing regular football.  This was about 3 months ago and I never properly let it heal.  I re-pulled it about 3 times after that because I was too impatient.

I pulled it on the outside of my leg - the part that connects to your knee at the bottom.  I'm just now able to flex my tendon on the outside that connects to the knee.  You know how you have one of those skinny tendons connecting from hamstring to knee on each side of your leg?  Well, the right one is torn or pulled.

I also have a gap in my hamstring now.  The gap has no muscle and almost impossible to flex.  I'm slowly getting it to flex a little but it might take a while.

Anyways, anyone had this problem before, especially in this spot?

Here it is... slightly bruised after doing some rehab exercises:

And here is my hammy when I try to flex it.  See how it has the gaps showing?

oh shit man that seems quite bad! Never had anything like that, but I have a friend who took some pretty serious damage on his hamstring after someone stepped on his with cleats on while he was slide-tackling, that was horrible! It took him ages to recover, and he still can't run fast or play for long because the injury keeps coming back. I don't know if it was an injury like yours, but he took complete bed rest for a month of so, and slowly had to "learn" how to walk. You should take more rest man, it'll recover much faster if you wait a while!!

Haha, thanks guys.  I keep rubbing it myself.  :celebrate:

I'm trying to do some very light weight on the injured hamstring.  Hopefully the muscle tear is not too big and the gap will close partially.

I'll let you know how it goes.  In the meantime, please post any advise you might have.

I got similar injury, It seems like you ruptured the Semitendinosis tendon that connects
to the back of the knee. You have to do lots of strech and strenghinning around the
area so you can get your other muscles strong enough to take over. You should def.
see a PT to help you with that. Def. don't play because you're just delaying the healing
process. Did you see an ortho yet? If so, what did they say?

Hey mate... thanks for the feedback.  I think you're right.

I'm actually back and playing now.  It's not 100% - probably at 70%.  I'm definitly using the other parts of my hamstring now.  I can feel a tendon/muscle where I tore it, but it's not big.  It's just a tendon without muscle around it.  It's holding up OK so far but I'm not pushing it too much.  I'm trying not to sprint too much.  I'll continue doing weights on it, or is that a bad idea?  I'm doing hamstring curls to help strengthen whatever is there and the other muscle groups.

Actually...

Looking at that diagram, I didn't tear that muscle.  Mine is the one on the outside of the leg, not inside.
