thats barring the fact that if the stopper sees fit, he can drop back and lay along side the sweeper. I like an elastic formation with lots of room for quick positional transitions etc

This shape in defense could work if played with wing backs and but not with the way the midfield is lined up. I fully understand the player in front of the the back three dropping in and becoming a center half but this is how I see it working:

This would be my revised formation:

If the ball went wide when defending then the CB from that side could go across and the DM (stopper) could fill in the hole thus creating a back four when without the ball. This would take the pressure off the wing backs and allow them to play, for the most part, as wide mids with little defensive duties.

you just made it a 4-4-2 which would only work in my books if the strikers could also play as wingers and collect balls along the side (at least for the wide style of game that I like)

I am a risk-taker, and I would play offside trap anyways. I know its dangerous, but I would have alot of players in the other team's half pressuring he ball, with the stopper behind them for support

good descasion guys. currently in mordern football strickers are becoming more fast and stronger. i think a team with out two centre backs can not keep a clean sheet.

MVB will probably try the 4-2-3-1 with ajax. he played like that with holland on the EC and we won all our matches in the poule with it, before our dutch guus hiddink treated us  :down:
