This shape in defense could work if played with wing backs and but not with the way the midfield is lined up. I fully understand the player in front of the the back three dropping in and becoming a center half but this is how I see it working:

If the ball went wide when defending then the CB from that side could go across and the DM (stopper) could fill in the hole thus creating a back four when without the ball. This would take the pressure off the wing backs and allow them to play, for the most part, as wide mids with little defensive duties.
