Title: Classic Question
Post by: Tito on May 09, 2008, 07:34: PM
I'm not sure if any of yous have ever been asked the same question but a few years ago i have and just wanted to know what your answers would be (post explanation for your answer)

If you were a father with two kids, one girl and one boy, from a developing country, broke (cheap/ money less) and you got lucky in tattsloto and you only had enough money to take one of your kids to college. Who would you pick the girl or the boy?

as i said earlier explain why you chose that answer.

ill take the girl and the boy will become a football player  :dontknow:

It depends, i would pay for the child that is less smart, and hope that the other one would get good enough marks to get a scholarship to get into a college for free

Post by: Tito on May 09, 2008, 09:26: PM
this is under circumstances which you don't know which is smarter

i would take the boy because you wouldn't want to waste on someone who is most likely to become a housewife/husband and you don't see too many househusbands

Then i would do it for the boy. Girls are ussually smarter, and work harder in school.

no need for sexism
but please explain
Title: Re: Classic Question
Post by: sputnik on May 09, 2008, 09:43: PM
its a fact. in many developing areas, girls are of no use, in China they killed girls, in Africa they had many children to get more boys to provide for the family.

and obviously the boys would exist is there were no girls unless women gave birth to fully developed women
that post was just stupid girls are equal to boys it may vary but most boys are pretty stupid compared to girls
Title: Re: Classic Question
Post by: sputnik on May 09, 2008, 09:53: PM
i have to say: duh.

the point of that post was about the point of this topic. sending a child to college. obviously im not sexist, or think girls arent equal to boys or have no use, but in the situation you described? of choosing a girl or a boy to send to college? in a developing country? i stick by my guns, in that situation, sending a girl to college is no use, their opportunitys are even less equal that in developed countries, it is a complete waste of your money.
Title: Re: Classic Question
Post by: Tito on May 09, 2008, 09:57: PM
i'm going to have to disagree with you again the girl could get a very job
while the boy becomes a bricklayer or some other job even tho i said the boy too because the girl will eventually become a housewife i still think its a 50/50 gamble
Title: Re: Classic Question
Post by: sputnik on May 09, 2008, 10:04: PM
the main word there is could. of course she could. but imagine you are a unimaginabky poor family. you win the lottery and get to get one kid into college. youre seriously telling me its 50-50? when the unequality in gender there for employment is so massive? youre willing to bet maybe even your survival on 50-50 between a boy and a girl?

yes a girl has a chance of getting a good job... but its so much lower than a boy in underdeveloped countries. its just playing the odds, the chances of your family surviving if you send a boy to college than a girl is much greater. with steaks that high i wouldnt risk on a gil.

there aren't any. And also, I'd rather have my son be succesful because I could just marry off my daughter to a rich person, and my son would get rich(er) because of his college education so he'd marry well and my family name would carry on.

i was just thinking about this question and i would choose the boy because the girls like i might have said along time ago will eventually become a housewife theres no point in an educated housewife unless she will work and earn but if she earn then who will raise the kids , typical answer childcare but would you really have a stranger take care of your child instead of the one that gave birth to it i don't think that the same amount of care and love will be given to properly raise the child

also with both parents working this will also have a unstable household and the family won't function well

No disrespect to girls, but most of them with out a constant male figure in there life to guide them (older brother, uncle or father). Some hustler will just usually end up sweet talking her for a little bit and before you know it hes got her in the palm of his hand. They seem to be quiet gullible. So the boy it is.

id choose the oldest to go, as they have less time on their side

no I make abstractions. There is a diffeence. I have an abstract mind, and therefore I write abstractly. I do realize that I sometimes need to root the content of my arguments less in theory, but there is nothing wrong with my diction. To express abstractions, language pften has to be stretched to its limit. But my arguments aren't convoluded, they are just complex.

You don't need to write abstractly in order to make simple arguments. It doesn't matter how you think.

I have used both an english dictionary maybe twice, and a thesaurus 3 times, in my life. I get vocabulary from reading actual books. My bad about the spelling error, though. And my arguments aren't simple, thats the entire point. The basic ideas that I introduce are relatively simple, but the references I make are the opposite of that. If you actually pursued my references you'd see why. I guess I write prose too much like Geoffrey Hill writes poetry. In Hill's case, it's a good thing. In mine, apparently it's bad

@tf10

i'm not hating on you because of the way you argue; i understand everything you've said during arguments without a problem. i do, however, don't think you should come onto a forum with that sort of diction and then rationalize by saying you've never read a dictionary in your life. We don't know you like that, nor do we care why and how you speak the way you do when you argue. It'd be best to avoid those sorts of comments because, although you aren't speaking a different language, you make yourself seem as if your trying "oh so hard" to sound intelligent, intellectual, etc. I mean, fuck, this isn't a dissertation, but a soccer forum. It's best to argue and speak clearly and concisely.

yeah but you must understand that convincing you means nothing to me. I write for myself and myself alone. And you should understand what I write anyways. If you want to see true verbal diarrhea, go check out Heidegger's Being And Time. It uses technical and obscure words like an elephant spewing shit, but it is still an acknowedged and great philosophical work, and one of the main influences for modern Existensialism/philosophers like Sartre and Derrida.

fine fair enough, but I don't read dictionaries, I read boks that use that kind of diction, so you sort of pick it p as you go along, and, in my case, adopt it as a certain writing style. However, when I write, in say, verse, my diction changes somewhat, becoming less technical and more imagery-based. You all have got to understand, I don't put any effort into the stuff I write here, iy's just the way I express thoughts to myself/the words that I think in, if you follow my meaning.

@ Tito:
Fair enough, but when you bring up an issue, I like to put in my two cents and see what you all think. I write stuff as a conduit for my own thoughts more often than to oppose those of others. Sometimes your counter argumets require me to revise my original thoughts, which is a good thing
