+1

yes, this group is so easy - compared to others
i m sure russia will advance further... however knowing the team .. i really hope they will take it very seriously
i m not too happy with arshavin, i don't think he deserves to be a starter - at the same time hard to think of anybody else to take up his role on the field: i hope dzagoev will get enough playing time

Dzagoev will be interesting to watch... curious about that youngster.

The bad thing for this group is the first knock-out round.  They have to play Group B which is Germany's.  I guess it's kinda fair for both groups... if you played in tough Group B you are rewarded, and if you got it easy in Group A... well now you got your work cut out for you.

Well, the thing with the defenses is managers mistake. We have alot of  talented players like Fetfatzidis,Mitroglou,Kyriakos Papadopoulos,Ninis and more..
The manager is dickhead,he always choose old and poor players.
Why hating on Greece???? We <3 Greece...

Group A kicks off the tournament today.  The first match starts in an hour.  I think Poland beats Greece today and Russia will be the Czechs... both by 2-0 score lines.

1-0 Poland at halftime.

What a terrible red card for the Greek player.  He got 2 yellows and neither yellow was even a foul.  What an embarassment on the ref's part, and what a shame for the player who now has to miss most of the tournament.

This ref gave 16 red cards in 19 La Liga games last season.

Great second half by Greece despite playing with 10 men.  They even missed a PK that could've won it.

That sub that came on was dangerous... should be playing all 90 minutes.

Not sure what happened to Poland.  You can't slip up in the second half against 10 man while playing at home.  Now they lost their starting keeper as well.

Lewandowski was deleted from our defense. We still have players that they dont deserve first team like Samaras,Gkekas.
Too bad we lost the penalty :(

Great first goal by Lewandowski though... you did keep him quite in the second.  I'll give you that.

Your skipper did a terrible job on that PK.  Opened his body way too much... easy to read for any decent keeper.

Impressed by the Russians.  Looked very solid despite playing on the Czechs.  Not sure what Czech Republic was doing not playing a true defensive mid?  Russians were having a stroll through the center of park.

My bracket is already jacked up I think.  I chose Poland to win and Russia as second.  Looks like those two might be swapped.

Russia is looking a very strong team. I think they might go far in this tournament. Poland does have some quality, so it's not over yet. Good game so far. 2nd half should be good.

Did anyone catch the Greece x Czech Republic game? I was working soccer camps, so I had to miss it.

First half czech were soo much better. Second half got dangerous because cech compeltly failed on an easy ball and gave greece a goal. But they were too weak to get a second one in.

Read the match report. Wish I could have watched it. Two goals super early in the match. Were the Greeks completely asleep. Completely ruins their game plan. Shame Greece have never been able to rediscover the magic they had in 2004, but I guess it builds the legend of how incredible that triumph was.

Great 2nd half from Poland. Sick goal. I'm picking Russia and Poland to advance. Czech Republic isn't as strong as they have been in previous years, and Poland has the home support behind them. That always means something in these big tournaments.

Greece can't rediscover their 2004 magic. That was parking the bus in front of your goal magic.

Just like Chelsea, that shit works once but never again. Chelsea will never win the Champions League again playing that way. Same with Greece. The stars just aligned for them during those runs.

Poland looked better today as I expected. Even game between them and Russia. Hope Poland takes care of Czechs. We might see a Germany vs Poland match up. Now that shit would be epic.

Funny, I think of Greece winning as magic, but no one would have ever thought Greece would ever win. I think Chelsea winning the CL as complete garbage. They are supposed to be good, but played so bad. The thing is you would expect some sort of improvement from them after winning the EURO in 2004. They haven't done anything in a major tournament since.

Adi, reds4life, u mad?(about chelsea haha)

Polands goal by Blaszzyyzxchzykowski was awesome, i think if they had lost if might have been a civil war :D

Germany vs Poland, so many German players are Polish, the irony...

Brasil haven't done much since winning 2002 world cup, 2 confed cups and  copa americas, bombed out of every world cup since in shocking fashion, its not great in itself, especially for such a hghly thought of team. so chill out on greece, they've been doing it tough, i wouldn't expect them to be contenders everywhere after a few good matches.

Don't like Chelsea, and I prefer teams that actually play football. Parking the bus in front of the goal is boring to watch and not a good style of football. Frankly, it was just shocking to watch them do that and win. Everyone though Barca and Bayern both would eventually break them down and win, but they didn't. Credit to Chelsea for doing what they did well. They still aren't the best team in Europe, but they did win.

I don't think Brazil has anything to do with this thread. They went out of the last 2 WCs to a team that made the finals. That's really not that bad. They lost in the semi-final this year of the Copa America, but they won the previous one. They can't win everything.

I never expected Greece to become a world power after 2004. I never thought they had that many talented players. You would just think they would overall improve. Maybe become a team that always looks capable of getting out of the groups in tournaments like these. Instead, ever since that tournament, they failed to qualify for the WC, than crashed out of every other competition since then in the group stage.

so you just support a team based on their style of play? i support chelsea because i love chelsea. and if they aren't the best team in europe, who is? they won the tournament which crowns the best team
i think best team in europe is just a concept, not an actual team. people would have said barcelona, but they are very fallible.
if you support liverpool does that mean you like talking about 40year old football matches and conceding lots of goals? you should support a club because you love its soul, i think
people who hate chelsea are just jealous

Brazil.  They can't win everything.
they fucking should its fucking brasil, they shouldnt lose

I support Liverpool no matter how they play football. Obviously, I'd prefer they play more attractive football, but I'm worried about them winning. Liverpool actually do have a tradition of playing very attractive football, and I've been a fan of them for over 10yrs.

I do not support Chelsea, because I've never supported Chelsea. I don't like Bayern, Barca, or Real much either, so the CL this year was pretty much neutral. I than supported the teams that I preferred watching based on the football they played. Chelsea played a barbaric defensive style of football, so I wanted them to win least of all. Credit to them for winning the CL, but they aren't the best team in Europe. They finished 6th in England for a reason. Barca isn't either. Real Madrid are definitely the best team. I can't see anyone disagreeing. They set a points record in La Liga this year. Losing on penalties to Bayern was a bit of a shock, but that happens. It's a KO tournament. The best team isn't necessarily always the winner.

Brazil should win everything? Well, I agree they produce the most talented footballers of any country, but you could currently say the same about Spain. Look at who is on their team. Shouldn't they win everything? In club football many people would think that of Barcelona or Real Madrid. Really, one of them should have won the CL. For me, hands down the top 2 European teams. The fact is that is part of the beauty of football. You have to win on the pitch. It's possible for upsets to happen on the greatest degrees.

You're nuts if you believe Chelsea is the best team in Europe just because they won the Champions League.  Anyone who has a brain and the guts to call it how they see it knows very well that Barcelona is clearly the best team in Europe.  Just because they didn't win the CL doesn't mean they're not the best anymore.  EVERYONE knows Barca is still the best team by quite a margin.  No point in arguing otherwise.

Winning the CL doesn't mean you're the best team... everyone knows that as well...

Barca the best? Well, I'd say Real Madrid hands down proved it this season to be the best. Past 5yrs Barca overall have been the best, but this year it's Real. Real Madrid won La Liga with a points record. They have to be the best team and Barca 2nd best this season.

Dzgoav is shitting out goals for Russia at the moment. Fuckin awesome!

I'd still say Barca is best.  Barca lost Villa so that was a problem this year.  Same with Puyol and Abidal who were out most of the season.  I think Madrid's deeper team helped them win the league.

Look at their head-to-head match ups.  No arguing Barca is better when you look at those.  Barca still outclasses them and beats them more often.
Title: Re: EURO 2012 - Group A - POL/GRE/RUS/CZE
Post by: redsforlife on Jun 14, 2012, 07:38: AM
Well, if you look only at head to head, Liverpool is better than Chelsea the European Champions, so we must be the best team in Europe! Now realistically, Real Madrid were the best team this year. Injuries are part of the game. Depth is an important part of the game. You cannot disagree with Real Madrid's season performance not being better. Also, the head to head was much closer this season. Real Madrid did have to beat Barca to win the league this year.

Looking at everything, Barcelona is still the better team.  Maybe Madrid will be better next year since Pep is gone, but not for a second will I believe that Madrid is better than Barca yet.  Barca still schools them.

Well said... crippled them enough not to win the league due to all the matches.  Even without Villa or a true forward, they still played better/even against Madrid.

Look at it this way...

I thought Bayern would beat Real.

I would never expect us to beat Barca on the other hand.

We'll see what happens next year.  I still think the best way to tell is to look at their head to head matchups.  Luckily we have 5+ games between them each year.  Good sample size...
Title: Re: EURO 2012 - Group A - POL/GRE/RUS/CZE
Post by: redsforlife on Jun 14, 2012, 02:59: PM
Best way is a league table. Like I said, Liverpool is better than Chelsea if we look head to head only, and even I disagree with that. This year we could have never managed to beat Barca. There are always match ups that favor different teams to the style. Liverpool matched up better to Chelsea than Barca. By no means does that mean Liverpool is better than Barca than. Barca's only real claim would be the head to head. Other than league matches, when did Real and Barca play? They split the league matches. Bayern only won on penalties, so not a real win. Penalties is a lottery. Chelsea the same in the final. They didn't lose the game, they lost the tie breaker.

This season with all factors built in, Real have to be the best. Past 3yrs, I'd agree with you Barca has been by far better than Real, but Real have closed the gap and edged them this season.

Your argument also contradicts yourself. Chelsea must be better than both Barca and Bayern if head to head matters more. :098:

Post by: Adi on Jun 14, 2012, 03:43: PM
League does tell the story for the most part.  Chelsea is 5th best in England... about right according to last season.

I think most people agreed that Bayern outplayed Madrid over two legs and deserved to win.  It wasn't just about the penalties.

Same with Barca over Chelsea... Barca was better over two legs but it didn't matter.

I think Madrid has closed the gap but I would still give a healthy Barca side the edge.  Madrid was very lucky with injuries last year... nobody went down for them all season.

actually there are many fans who do not care about the style of football their team plays. Some people place higher value on it than others.

But what i liked most about real madrid this year was how they attacked vs barca with no fear. In previous years madrid looked scared of barca. I like attacking football, so i was really disappointed.

Overall i would say madrid and barca were very evenly matched this season, not better. I'm trying to be unbiased  But chelsea deserved the champ league because they were strong, but i expected more style after all that spending.

I never disrespected Chelsea. I credited them for doing it the way they did. If I said they were the best team in Europe or they played pretty football, I'd be lying. I'll be honest with ya. Liverpool weren't the best team in Europe in 2005 when we won it. Juve or Milan were, but we beat both of them, so we deserved the trophy. You are probably too young to remember something as far back as 2005. Chelsea deserved it as well, but just weren't that entertaining.

Don't use Liverpool in football  arguments? Ya, the most successful English team of all time. They really suck and have no place to be considered in  football discussion. Must be amazing supporting a team like Chelsea still in single digits on all championships they have won. Also, enjoy that mini CL trophy they get to keep in their trophy cabinet. Are ya bitter we beat you so many times this season?

I can't support any team from another league? I'd say most football fans that follow multiple leagues at least kind of have a team they prefer to win. Why wouldn't you? I'm not hardcore about them, but I prefer them to other La Liga teams. Oh, who the hell is athletico? Please don't try to tell me things about football if you don't even know the names of the teams. There is Athletic Bilbao and Atletico Madrid.

On the subject of how teams play football. Well, I'll be the 1st to say if it means Liverpool winning, I couldn't give a shit how ugly and terrible they played. I would know it's ugly though, and I wouldn't get offended by it when people say it.. The thing is, I don't watch football only because I support a team. I watch football, because I love the game and appreciate the skill involved in playing. This means I want to see people using attracting attacking styles of plays that are exciting. I wouldn't like the sport if I didn't appreciate the beautiful parts of the game more than some of the more brash or ugly parts. I have a vast respect for tough players that foul, tackle, etc. but goals, skills, and passing are more beautiful.

False.  Only those who support the team who plays the negative football are for it.  They are for anything their team does if it works.  This includes negative football.  You can't tell me these fans wouldn't prefer a more attractive style of football if their team could do it.  These fans will take what they can... but they would certainly prefer their team to play attractive football if they could do it and win.  Nobody chooses negative football over good football if the results are the same.

Adi, you have to remember there are a large portion of fans that understand so little about football they cannot tell the difference. The majority  of all sports fans kind of half watch while socializing with friends  or doing something else. They only tune in for the important parts like goals. This type of fan could care less how their team plays as long as they are winning. They don't realize their team plays ugly football, and they are typically the ones offended when people say that about their team.

Liverpool, so successful that they haven't won a league for more than 30 years
i think your bitter your team has no hope of acheiving anything meanful
yeah we haven't won as much, but thats great for you, keep the same few teams that have always won trophies at the top, never let any new teams try and challenge this, this makes it so interesting to have a competition thats constantly between man utd arsenal lpool
will be like spanish or scottish league

I thought you were suggesting you were a passionate athletico madrid fan at the same time you like liverpool, which is silly
the awkward moment when an american tries to tell you the names of "soccer" teams. most people will call athletico bilbao simply blibao, and athletico madrid simply athletico

Damiano, I just think you need to take a writing class or something. You fail to write even what I think you are trying to say. Also, you arguments once again don't make sense. Me talking about Liverpool's trophy success makes the league boring, because only the same teams winning? I never said anything about this. I was extremely happy when City won the league this year, because it makes the league more interesting. No, I'm not bitter about not having won the league in so long. That's a part of life. We have still had some great success without winning  the league, and I think the new owners are going to make an effort to bring us back to the top.

I said in my original post that I was not a hardcore Atletico Madrid fan. It's Atletico, not Athletico(that's just jibberish). Athletic Bilbao is the proper name. I honestly don't see why you can't have a team for each league. It just makes following more than one league more enjoyable. I support Liverpool above all other teams, but I don't see where the problem is. I think most multiple league fans do the same.

I think this is the awkward moment when you realize an American knows more about football than you. You've brought that up before. You don't like USA? It's not like New Zealand is a football nation either. I'll never get in an argument about rugby with you, because I know very little about it.

Czech and Greece advance. Greece advances? wtf? Head to head is the tie breaker. I thought it was goal differential. Real shame for Russia. I thought they were easily the best team in the group. One bad game, and they are out. I could only watch Poland x Czech, so I don't know how the other game went.

On a serious note, who coulda seen this shit coming?!  My god, this is ridiculous!

Jason, I too thought goal difference was the first tie breaker... I guess not.

Poland was poor in every second half they played.  A real shame.  I can't believe they let their nation down like this.

Greece, OMG. What can you say about them?  Gotta give them some credit for sticking it out.  They never gave up.  They were always in big holes (red card, down early) but they never quit.  Opposite mentality of Poland to be honest.

I know we have some Greece fans here so I'm happy for them but this sucks for Alex and other Russian fans.

Russia was clearly the best team in this group.  I guess this happens when you don't play 100%.  Arshavin is a prime example of a guy who is mentally weak and inconsistent.

I really hope this isn't a sign of what's to come tomorrow as well in Germany's group.

I give Greece a lot of credit. They played really good in the 1st half. Karagounis and Samaras are 2 very good players. In the 2nd half they played very boring and defensive, but still very strong.

I know some may be happy to see a strong team like Russia knocked out, but honestly I don't think any team wants to play vs this, ummmm, effective Greek team.

lol no you didn't have a solid game, you play the most disgusting, least attractive football in this tournament so far

got lucky and scored.. defended with a whole team for the rest of the game: classic greek play

however.. greece deserves respect since they played with passion, and gave their 200% to win  .. while on russian team only dzagoev, denisov and malafeev played at their fullest..
what a disgrace, i have no words honestly..

congrats to greece

Greece's goal was not lucky. Russia defended really bad from the throw-in. They were not alert enough to see Karagounis running free behind them. And the shot was low and hard, gave the keeper very little chance.

Also, Greece didn't tackle dirty or cheat, except for one player faking injury, so i respect them. Greece were smart to play defensively. If they attacked then Russia would have destroyed them.

Btw Czech Rep finish 1st with minus goal difference :sign0065:

Technically, Greece didn't play bad football. They played ugly football. Bad football would suggest they were ineffective, so 2zef is correct. They had a solid game. It's really rough to watch, but if it's effective, congrats to Greece. Germany x Greece now. This game is going to remind me of the Chelsea x Bayern match just minus the Chelsea players. We know the possession is going to be 70% Germany.

Reporter/Fan: Our fans came up to you and the team after the game but all they got from you was “you’re all bastards”. And there were 100 millions of “bastards” supporting you. Do you understand it? If you just said “Sorry, guys” there would’ve been no problem. No questions to any of you. Cause everything can happen. But instead every player who was approached by fans said only “get out, bastard”. None of the lads said “Sorry, we couldn’t do it”.

Arshavin – Well, if the fans were in normal condition maybe we would have said that.

Reporter/Fan – Well, my friend who doesn’t drink at all said that but in reply heard only insults from the players. I Don’t even want repeat what he heard. But NONE of the players simply said ‘sorry’.

Arshavin – Why should we say ‘sorry’?

Reporter/Fan – Well, you failed, didn’t you?

Arshavin – Why?

Reporter/Fan – You failed.

Arshavin – Why?

Reporter/Fan – Look, I’m not an expert, but you failed.

Arshavin – Just answer my question: Why should we say sorry?

Reporter/Fan – You didn’t meet expectations.

Arshavin – Whose expecations? Yours or ours?

Reporter/Fan – Of 100 million Russians

Arshavin – Well, if we didn’t meet your expecations it’s your problem. And we were all trying…

Reporter/Fan – You really mean it? That if you didn’t meet our expecations it’s OUR problem?

Arshavin – Yeah.

Reporter/Fan – Well, I don’t have anything else to say. I’m shocked. I’m just shocked.

Another Fan – We’re supporting you, we’re going everywhere with you,

First fan/Reporter – There was full stadium of us coming here to support you and it’s all OUR problem?
