the greater the speed of the technique, and the less the telegraph of the wind up (the muay thai kick has more telegraph) then the greater the likelihood of connecting. Without a doubt, the Muay Thai kick is better once you connect with it, but having seen in in fights and videos, etc, it seems to be slightly easier to evade, because if you see it coming, you have a plit second longer to take a quick step backwards

on the other hand it's harder to dodge because of it's greater roundness

I phrased myself badly there...I think that if you DON'T land a kick, then it doesn't matter how much power you have

connecting on the kick is the first priority, and if there's a bit less power, I'd make that sacrifice

this is not to say that you can't connect on a muay thai roundhouse kick...it's just harder to do

they are diff kinds of techniques and should be used accordingly, to the situation that the fighter sees fit.  each will have its advantages and disadvantages in specific situations.

that goes for dealing with a roundhouse once it's thrown at you too.  you don't always have to take a stepback.  u can block with the hands/arms, the foot/legs, u can duck if it's high, u can even move in closer and neutralize any kind of kicks completely.  all depending on the situation.

it's like football.  the ability to read the game is most important.

thats all true...

but I was just giving my opinion on which kick I believe to be more effective on a regular basis...

I hate when people jam up my kicks, especially small people, because sometimes you know you could just kick through them, but you don't, because thats just a dick move

well it also depends on ur target.  going for the thighs or legs in general for example, a muay thai kick is much better than a tkd style kick.

try this combo.

fake low left round, jumping high right round, down to a right front snap kick, left side kick, and spinning right sidekick/back kick

will do

I scored mainly on sidekick-punch and sidekick-b$ackfist combos today

How abou this:

right head hook kick-right head roundhouse kick-left driving middle front kick-left head punch-right reverse middle punch

or my personal favorite: leadoff punch-double roundhouse-ridge hand to the opposite temple

oooo hand techniques!

there are essentially two types of attacks i love most with my hands.  first is the straight punch combos.  block and straight punch at the same time.... wing chun chain punches which are basically a series of straight punches.... fake with the kick or a soft low front or round kick then a straight punch..... straight punch or two into a full force power punch/cross (or whatever u call it).......

i also love those circular movements.  yay circular movements ftw!  a fake hook, then spin into a back hand.... a fake hook spinning into an elbow strike...... fake hook, spin, elbow, spin back the other way into a cross.........

ooo the possibilities! hehehe

also, yea the temple is a good target but also consider the eyes, nose, right in the front on his mouth, that little spot above ur mouth under ur nose (really good one!), the throat, etc. and that's only like, half the targets u can hit.... above the shoulders!

don't go for the jaws or forehead or top of the head or shit like that.  u feel something solid behind ur blows and u feel like ur doing something but when ur on the other end taking those blows u know that those strikes don't hurt that much.

I love roundhouse punch with a circular elbow rotation into an overhand backfist, and when I was younger I used to do ridge and to the floating rib into ridge hand to the opposite temple, but I have since learned that middle ridge hands are ineffective
generally I only fuse hand techniques together spontaneously. because I'm a really dfensive sparrer, I like to make myself a hard target to hit (I made 3 people attack in the wrong direction today it was great  ) and then dodge and counter attack in a flurry on punches, backfists, and ridgehands

I work on elbow combos, but generally don't use them in sparring because they are frowned upon for some reason (probably injury-related haha)

the possibilities in martial arts are so varies, though. It's great

@ targetting commen: we're encouraged to hit to teh tip of the nose for sock effect, as well as the throat, the jaw and top of the head (hehe) and that nervous centre on the side of the neck...

techniques to the top of the head work if you do like a hammer kick or something (a technique I learned from my dad's tkd days)

only if the guy's like.... sitting down.... otherwise you don't get that windup for any kind of real power.  plus, hammer kicks are ridiculously easy to defend/counter against.  also.... shoulders/collarbone might be a better target for those kicks.  but even then, i don't like them that much.

haha yeah you're right I was just trying to think of a tecnique that would work striking the top of the head...

oooo maybe some sort of leaping elbow strike coming down onto the head like in Ong Bak lol  :dontknow:

but seriously that might actually be effective
