i think it's like this

mike with your equation you will get 0.9999 with infinite nines after the dot. so it gets extremely close to 1 but will never be so

0.999... is exactly equivalent with 1.

i disagree, you miss 0.0000001  (the amount of zeroes is than the same as the amount of nines in the other number)

but technically mike is correct and sander is incorrect. mathematically the equations mike put up are correct and thats the only proof that there is in this arguement.

Something, which is infinitely close to something, is just right on it. 0.3999...=0.4 i.e

well you said it yourself  :thumbsup: it's close so it's not exactly it. there's a infinite small number between 0,9999.. and 1

but mike to tell you the truth, i'm not really sure who's right. your and svens equations look right, but my arguements must be good too to you (i hope). i'll ask my mathteacher after the holidays ;)

Nope, I said that something's that infinitely close to something else, is right on it. If you take to pieces of rocks and say "they are right on eachother", it's just as correct to say "they are infinitely close to eachother". So it's exactly it.

And x^(1/n) where n->infinity and 0<x<1 is also equivalent 1, since it's infinitely close, or oh wait, right on it.

0,0 after this number you can put as many fucking zeroes as or you want or you can write 0,01 or 0,0000000000000001 or 0,0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000............. as far as you want, but you can never make it be number 0 , you can say that 0,0 ~ 0 ..... but not exactly thesame as 0
