First of all, Odonkor is not a good player. He's a sub that can come in and try to make an impact on the game. As of now, our right mid position is the worst on the park and he can't even come on as a sub. That says a lot...
Germany really has been struggling in the last two games. As far as Klose is concerned, give him a break. He's been setting up Mario left and right. If Mario could figure out how to score from two yards out, Klose would have 4 assists by now. Klose can take the shot but he's setting his partner striker up for an easier (almost guaranteed) finish. What Mario Gomez is doing is beyond me. We need to get him going but I'm starting to lose my patience.
Ballack also needs to get involved more. It seems our team is a bit out of shape. There is not enough movement or confidence as there was in 2006. Schweinsteiger will have fresh legs and I hope he can make an impact in the next round. If we put him in his natural left mid position, Podolski can be pushed up top and Mario can be put on the bench.
It's going to be interesting either way. To be honest, I have no idea what to expect from Germany. The way I see it, we are the underdogs against Portugal. I'm still confident we can pull off a result. The knock-out stages are quite different.
Also, the comment about Metzelder being slow is quite true. He's a liability, but then again look at 2006 when Germany played against Portugal. We started Nowotny (sp?) at center back. The guy can't move worth shit. Metzelder is a legend compared to him. Nonetheless, Nowotny held his ground and it was enough to beat the Portuguese, although it took a hell of a performance from Schweinsteiger.
And keep in mind who Portugal's striker is. Nuno Gomez is nothing special. I'm not so worried about our center backs keeping him under control as much as I am worried about Ronaldo. I think we'll be find controlling Deco and Simao. Frings might miss out on the game but we should still be strong and disciplined enough to control those two guys. As far as Ronaldo is concerned, I believe Friedrich/Jansen and Lahm will have their hands full. If we can contain him, we should do fine. Remember, a tie is usually good enough for the Germans. Penalty kicks are the one area the Germans usually dominate in.
