OK, OK... maybe not "clearly" but most people say he's "clearly" not there because he hasn't won any World Cups.  Just trying to sway the argument so we can end up in the middle somewhere.

I think it should be done on individual performances. Whether he wins a World Cup or not has more to do with Argentina than Lionel Messi. Now, debating whether Maradona's individual performances are better than Messi is fair game. I still prefer Maradona.

The thing is I find it very hard to choose one individual being clearly the best ever or for any time period. It's really difficult. It's actually kind of rare you have it like it currently is. Right now most people are sure Ronaldo and Messi are 1 and 2. There is some debate on the order, but most of us agree on this. I personally think they are both great, but very different players.

I THINK that Messi has the right to be called the best ever

I completely BELIEVE that he is in the top 10 in history.
I see Puskas, Best, Eusebio, Garrincha, Zico, and Platini put into many critics' list of top 10 best ever.
Messi is definitely better than them.
I put Messi up with the likes of Pele, Maradona, Cruyff, Zidane, Beckenbauer, and Di Stefano.

There are so many, it's hard to keep track for me. Guys that must be given mention of the top of my head: Pele, Maradona, Cruijff, Beckenbauer, Garrincha, Puskas, Best, Ronaldo, Romario, Stanley Mathews, Messi, C. Ronaldo, Eusebio, Platini, Zidane, Fontaine, Muller, Stoichkov, Shearer, Van Basten, Dalglish, etc.

If you want to look harder, you can find someone else that one could make a claim to a top 10 somehow. It's just too hard for me to pick.

about the goal-record: messi scored so many of those goals on penalty, which Gerd Müller (holder of the previous record if u didnt know, which i think u did) didnt...at least not as much as messi, so i dont think messi would have broken the record if it wasnt for the penalties
