Blocks, easier?
« on: Sep 20, 2012, 03:53: AM »
This phrase gets used so often "blocks are so much easier" and I agree, in terms of execution, it is easier than air combos but freestyle is not just about simply executing the trick. It's about how the execution appeals to the eye, the style. I mean I'm not sure how many of you would rather watch a hardcore lowers video with unclean combos, hands flying everywhere and the freestyler all over the place or watch someone not as hardcore but with clean combos and unique style. I think it's a similar case, it takes a lot of practise to get into a nice flow and own style in blocks which, in my opinion, is what blocks is all about. Blocks to me is not about how hard the trick is but how good your flow is and whether or not is it performed "stylishly", which, just like other areas of freestyle, require a lot of dedication and training. Thoughts?

All styles of freestyle can be extremely difficult. The preference of lowers air combos is just an opinion that many freestylers have. The top guys at blocks have just as difficult and intricate tricks, combos, and routines as any hardcore lowers guy. The same goes for all other styles of freestyle. They can all be just as difficult and crazy. Which one you prefer to do or watch is more of an opinion. We are also all different. There are tricks for everyone that come easy, but seem impossible to someone else and visa-versa.

definitely not true. the thing that makes air combos so different and hard from all the other style is that they are the most exhausting by far. one single lower trick like 3 revs or 3,5 revs can be as exhausting as a whole block combo.

but i agree every style in freestyle can be very very challenging and crazy, only that air combos add a physical factor to it. and yes i practise almost all styles (except blocks) so i know what i am talking about.

I agree, lower airs is the area that requires the most stamina. period. But I think that people also undermine the difficulty of blocks in terms of polishing it up with good flow and unique style.

When generalizing types of freestyle tricks, lowers are definitely the hardest physically. It takes great stamina to do long combos, and  it takes great explosion to do tricks that require super fast feet. There are individual tricks or types in other styles that can rival, but on the whole lowers is physically more difficult. Mainly only transitions can rival it for athleticism.

Now, difficult has many different things involved. Things can be extremely difficult without having to exert much energy into it at all. Also, there are limits to be pushed in all types of tricks.

I think only someone who trains both styles can give an accurate answer.
