As annoyed as I am by it, I wouldn't be surprised if England wins. When everyone was complaining about Woy Hodgeson being appointed manager, I said that he is actually the type of manager that could make England win. England aren't capable of playing the beautiful and technical football of teams like Spain, France, Germany etc. They can play the defensive, look to score on the counter attack, or score on set pieces style that is used by Hodgeson. This group stage I believe is proof enough that his tactics are working for England. I hope Italy finally ends them, but I wouldn't be surprised if they manage to win.

Lets just all pray we don't see a Greece x England match.

Good points.  England vs Greece would be a tragedy.  England vs Germany would be a mouthwatering match up however.

Now that Redknapp is available, do you think England should grab him or stick with Hodgson?

Hodgeson. Like I said, England need to play this shitty boring style of football to be successful. They have the players for this style. I'm not sure if they have the players to play the style Redknapp likes.

What I'm curious about is what is England going to do when Gerrard retires from International football? He has been their best player for years to me. This tournament is no different. 3 assists in 3 games. I don't understand why the media is still obsessing about Rooney. They have never backed Gerrard like this, and he has been their most consistent performer. Even in the Ukraine game, Rooney took all the headlines. You cannot take the goal away from him. He did what he needed to do, but it really was a tap in I think any player should score. Gerrard provided the service in every game so far. He also does so much more.

Gerrard has been top class this summer.  I didn't see it coming to be honest.  He's been battling injuries all season, but man... this summer, he looks like he's been in top form for years.

How has Pirlo turned back time this year?  He's playing like its 2006.  Impressive stuff from him since his move away from AC Milan.

I can't tell who will win this game.  It can really go either way between these two.

By the way, this is what really happened on Ukraine's missed goal...

Big game today!

England is coming out with the same line up... I think Walcott will cause some damage again as a sub.  Not sure who I want to win this one.

Hate the Italians and hate the way the English play.  England would be an easier matchup for Germany and could be revenge for CL.

Finally England is out. I was getting worried they would shit their way all the way to the finals, but finally logic prevailed. England always lose on penalties. Really, Italy should have won the game long before that, but credit to England for defending and Joe Hart for some big saves.

I think England's found their manager. Woy actually did something I thought would be impossible. Make England actually moderately successful. Most managers would have brought them to bow out at the group stage, but he took the right players for the system he wanted to play. It worked as well. They were never going to beat Italy playing in a different style, so this is the style they should play. They have the players for it.

England didn't deserve to win at all. They were terrible. Young and Milner didn't do enough to get good crosses in and Gerrard and Parker looked tired.

Still Italy were not very good either. Balotelli wasted too many chances and the others were average. Only Pirlo and Diamanti played well. Germany will destroy them, no doubt. Great penalty by Pirlo though.

I think England really missed impact players like Adam Johnson, Sturridge and Wilshere. For the World Cup these players, and maybe Oxlaide-Chamberlain too, will make England better.
forget Ronaldinho....only one deserves the -inho suffix......Jabarinho!!!!

Yes, I was worried about the same.  Glad it didn't happen.  They tried to do it like Chelsea and that might be their model going forward.  I think this also shows what luck was involved with Chelsea's glory.  Chelsea would get knocked out in the first or second knock-out round if they had to do it all over again.  I really believe that.  Their run was a once in a lifetime thing.  Those that believe their tactics and style of play can be reused for continued trophies must be kidding themselves.  If Chelsea had kept the opponent from creating chances, I'd give it to them, but against Barca, Napoli, and Bayern they allowed clear chances for goals.  They were just fortunate that the other team was wasteful in front of goal, and that included multiple missed penalties.

I partially agree.  England is not good enough to beat other teams, but this style won't win them anything either.  England was outplayed in all of their games, and they didn't even have a tough group.  That's not good or successful.  I know they got out of their group, but they could've easily lost all their games and gone home embarrassed.  England just isn't talented enough and no matter what style they play, they won't succeed until they develop more talent.  I see your point in saying another style would be less successful, but it's hard for me to believe that in the long run either.  Getting outplayed in all games against good and weak opponents isn't good.  I understand playing the tactics they did yesterday against good teams, but when you play the likes of Sweden and Ukraine, you have to me more attack minded and at least split possession.  You can't lose possession to poor teams 65/35.  That just won't work.

Also, England keeps trying to play a 4-4-2.  That's too outdated and doesn't work, especially at the international level where teams are more compact, organized, and more conservative.  Their 4 man midfield will get beat every time, and that's why they loose possession.  I know Rooney sometimes drops into the hole, but that's normally when he comes to receive the ball.  Defensively, England shapes up in a 4-4-2 formation for the most part.

England is poor no matter how you put it.  With Roy or without, they won't be successful.  If you think getting to the first knockout round is a success, then that's just not good enough.  I would gamble on Redknapp before accepting Quarters as my goal.
