USA vs Mexico, and general USA soccer frustrations!
« on: Jul 03, 2011, 04:11: PM »
Did anyone watch this game from a week ago?

Mexico came back from 2-0 down to win it 4-2.  Mexico played 10x better than the US and actually looked like a team who knew how to play football.

The US is so embarassing.  They don't know how to pass or control a ball and they have 0 creativity.  It really frustrates me to watch them play.  Change your youth system, professional league setup, and find a way to develop some talent.

I fuckin hate watching this team and the MLS.  It's a pathetic excuse for soccer.  The MLS and youth club finances might look good/stable, but the first touch and passing is shite.  It's not just about the money, fucking Americans.  Ruining the game.

that's not a particularly bad thing at this point. wrt the game, things might have been different had steve cherundolo not gone off.

happening. MLS having a vested interest in player development nowadays is doing wonders for our youth development system. you see players being brought along reasonably, and MLS academy teams are legitimately good (and i believe free). fc dallas has an excellent youth program placing many players on mexican and us youth national teams. though that is not exceptional in and of itself, i remember when their academy program was formed, and they've improved incredibly in just a few years.

luis gil was not picked up from an MLS academy, but i think that how RSL has handled his development is a testament to how much american soccer has changed from the days of freddy adu.

we're starting to produce players that read the game very well. players that don't make mistakes very often. it's frustrating to watch players like benny feilhaber and freddy adu. they are players that can play incredible balls forward, but then, the turn around and sloppily get caught in possession.

MLS has gotten much better, especially to watch. the benefit of having a league controlled centrally is that the league can dictate the style of play. MLS has offered incentives in the past to push a more attacking brand of play. although it's not the greatest league in the world, it is very watchable at this point e.g. nagbe's goal, najar's goal, hassli's goal, most of brek shea's goals, etc.

i would move onto the national team, but i am tired of typing. i will say this, if the talent isn't there, the results won't be. we would be much better with say a serviceable left-back and solid central defenders that can play out of the back, but we don't have them, and it's hard to hold a coach accountable for that. i am interested to see how stuart holden works into the middle of the field (not that we're at a loss for central midfielders, now). additionally, i predict that american women's panties will become 10% wetter with his return.

Fair enough, MLS is improving.

Watched Portland play the other day against LA.  Their fans are unreal!  All the new teams have incredible supporters.  If that continues, MLS might get somewhere.  I wouldn't mind going to watch a game with that type of support in the stadium.

What ya'll think about Klinsman taking over.  I'm excited.  I hope people don't expect him to turn the team around right away.  It's going to take time, but I think he's the right man for the job.  Can't wait for the US vs Mexico game just to see him on the sidelines.  He just needs some good assistants for the tactical side of the game.  They gotta see his attacking vision and be able to make it happen tactically.

For only having been around some 12 or 13 years, I think the MLS is taking an excellent approach to the league with regard to everything but properly developing young players; however, as you see with the New York Cosmos coming into the league, Cantona is prepared to build a world class team from the ground up; and he thinks he can do it in 20 years. This team is also going to create a rivalry aspect in New York, which is something I'd love to watch. I don't mind watching the MLS, but to be honest it does need to make improvements more quickly, because the top leagues in the world have young, local players that are developing fast as fuck.

just words. if you held him to it, this would go over about as well as the bank run that he orchestrated.

did he say, "ground up?"

you could have said the same thing at its inception. the gap has closed, not that it is important for mls to become a top league. mls needs to remain solvent and produce players

pretty neutral. i'm not incredibly optimistic. it's easier to avoid disappointment that way.

this interview has me more excited

ETA: i was also firmly outside of the, "i hate bob bradley camp." so, i think that that has tempered my expectations, but i also think that it was a good time for a change.

Keane heading to LA?

Tottenham striker Robbie Keane is closing on a lucrative move to MLS side LA Galaxy worth an estimated $9 million for a two-year contract, according to reports.

I didn't see a thread for the most recent meeting between the two sides...

I thought the best thing during the match was actually the pre-game when Klinsman honestly said he didn't think the team could win a World Cup at this point. We have a guy who know's we suck and hopefully he can fix it.
