Mexico played 10x better than the US and actually looked like a team who knew how to play football.
that's not a particularly bad thing at this point. wrt the game, things might have been different had steve cherundolo not gone off.
Change your youth system
happened
professional league setup
probably won't happen
find a way to develop some talent
happening. MLS having a vested interest in player development nowadays is doing wonders for our youth development system. you see players being brought along reasonably, and MLS academy teams are legitimately good (and i believe free). fc dallas has an excellent youth program placing many players on mexican and us youth national teams. though that is not exceptional in and of itself, i remember when their academy program was formed, and they've improved incredibly in just a few years.
luis gil was not picked up from an MLS academy, but i think that how RSL has handled his development is a testament to how much american soccer has changed from the days of freddy adu.
we're starting to produce players that read the game very well. players that don't make mistakes very often. it's frustrating to watch players like benny feilhaber and freddy adu. they are players that can play incredible balls forward, but then, the turn around and sloppily get caught in possession.
I fuckin hate watching this team and the MLS
MLS has gotten much better, especially to watch. the benefit of having a league controlled centrally is that the league can dictate the style of play. MLS has offered incentives in the past to push a more attacking brand of play. although it's not the greatest league in the world, it is very watchable at this point e.g. nagbe's goal, najar's goal, hassli's goal, most of brek shea's goals, etc.
i would move onto the national team, but i am tired of typing. i will say this, if the talent isn't there, the results won't be. we would be much better with say a serviceable left-back and solid central defenders that can play out of the back, but we don't have them, and it's hard to hold a coach accountable for that. i am interested to see how stuart holden works into the middle of the field (not that we're at a loss for central midfielders, now). additionally, i predict that american women's panties will become 10% wetter with his return.
