Hook: do you do MMA or MA?
if so, what style(s)?
I am in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. But I am not that good. I am only a whitebelt and came back recently after an injury. I have, in accumulated total, only practiced for 3 months.
ahh BJJ is cool
I am in Shotokan Karate and Judo (although less Judo)
I'm considering taking up another art -- I do karate/judo (same dojo) twice a week, and I'm thinking about doing something else once per week
the most conveniently located dojos/gyms are muay thai, bjj, aikido, and hapkido
any recommendatons? (I'd also prefer not to get the hell beaten out of me, because my future depends on my head, and being punchdrunk is not conducive to academics -- that said, I don't mind taking a few hits, especially body ones)
If you have a decent piece of change, I would recommend taking both muay thai and bjj if possible. I know I haven't been exactly modest about the amount of money I have, but I will tell you right now I am spending about $400/mo on martial arts right now; but to be honest I suck. I get tapped out every single time I am there and have only tapped out 3 people ever, and they were all white belts. I get tapped out by white belts all the time as well. But I have noticed a major improvement, but I am starting muay thai as soon as my shoulder heals up.
Take them both, they can both be applied to the street.
I don't have the cash for that....nowhere close haha
I'd rather get me something of a ground game because I already have a very strong background in a striking art -- I've been a student of shotokan karate for 9 years and I plan to continue towards my black belt. I need to cram train before I go off for university, because the earlist age you can get a black belt in my dojo is 18. That said, I'm beating/getting the better of black belts a fair amount of the time, so i think it should come before I actually ship off at the end of next summer. I do have some judo, as my sensei is a blackbelt in it (some throwing, some jointlocks and submissions -- nothing advcanced), but my ground game is minimal, especially compared to the emphasis my training has put on striking.
So: I want ground game/throws/takedown defense. Muay thai would be interesting for a different approach to striking, but I think it would ultimately be the least worthwhile. For me, it's really between aikido (a defense-oriented art), hapkido (which I don't know all that much about), and bjj
