Best rapper currently in the game, in my opinion:

Soul Khan - Speeding Bullets (Official Video)

As neymar's hair told me the other day: i can eat, have sex, and travel without them fucking with any of that.

so, i agree. there's nothing i can do about the stupid way our country is run, so why frustrate myself even thinking about it?
I'm with Mr. Boozer over here.

I actively avoid political discussion these days. At this point, a lot of what goes on doesn't even have to do with us, specifically. It's pseudo-classist, really. I'm content where I am, so yeah -- why fuck with that?

The Cave might be their best song. Good choice! I also love Winter Winds.

My one nit to pick with the group is that their material, at times, leans toward the cliched. They've got a fantastic vibe going, though, and I love the vocals. They're rich and ragged at the same time.

Adi: thanks for the listen and the advice! I'm into the slow, soulful vibes, but I do really dig Mumford and Sons, they've released some good stuff. If you like them, you might like the Horse Feathers:

Horse Feathers - Belly of June

Also, a lot of the stuff on this first album was recorded without a metronome or drum track, and the result is that it's at a very measured pace. I'm working on some faster stuff, but it's bluesier. Very harmonica-heavy, influenced by the Chicago blues scene in the 50s.

I'll try to come and post more often -- I haven't got much time these days, unfortunately. I hope all of you have been well, though!

Sure thing -- I'll try:

Genre is a hard thing to pin down, to be honest. I suppose that I was mostly exploring various elements of the blues and folk traditions, but with a lot of cross-genre fusions. The first track on the album, for example, is pretty much electropop. Whatever that means. The last track is a fusion of blues and trance music, with emphasized blues harmonica tracks undercut by a bass-heavy beat and airy synth riffs. The third track I'd describe as stadium rock -- it's very influenced by the chiming guitar sound in bands like U2 and Coldplay. The Son House cover (track 6) is probably the least accessible, and slowly shifts from a 5/16 time signature to the standard 4/4 by the time the vocals come in -- it's a fusion between blues and experimental electronica. I'd say that the strongest track on the album is "North," but many have disagreed with me. If you like acoustic stuff, you'll like that song, as well as "Down," "Blood Still Running," "Yeats Against The Sea," and "I Will Be Overthrown." Notably, "In Memoriam," the ninth track, features me messing around with a ukulele. Fun stuff. Hope that helps!

General Chat / Album Release

what up kids. I know I'm not around much, but I wanted to let everyone know that I've released an album this summer. You can download it for free (or payment, which would be doubly awesome) here:

http://bmeyerson11.bandcamp.com/album/menagerie

I've also released a separate single that isn't up for download yet:

Above all, a listen and a comment/critique would mean a lot.

Cheers!

kanye's work, to me, is pretty forgettable. No denying he's got a few things going for him, though...he's definitely got a persona, and isn't afraid of projecting it in his music...kind of like David Bowie in that respect.

Drake hasn't done anything remotely creative, and a whole bunch of good stuff is happening in hip hop right now...El-P released an album in 2010, and it was pretty transporting. Bad News Brown also released a great, soulful album, and his future was looking bright...sadly he was found dead in Montreal a couple weeks back.

Everything from Odd Future Wolf Gang is fresh as hell...Tyler the Creator is a prodigy, and so is Earl.

Avatar was shit, a complete ripoff of Dances With Wolves
I enjoyed Batman, but it was no masterpiece, just well-acted and exciting

Inception was better than Avatar, worse than Batman
Plot-line was interesting, if only because it took the overused, dusty 'what if our consciousness is someone else's dream?' idea and made it kind of exciting with guns and oneliners and shit. Acting and script were both pretty terrible though, the screenwriters couldn't write their way out of a paper bag, dialogue was contrived, I didn't believe half of what the characters were saying because it was so wooden.

Now that I've got that off my chest, time to go watch freestyle videos.

Hook: do you do MMA or MA?

if so, what style(s)?

I am in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. But I am not that good. I am only a whitebelt and came back recently after an injury. I have, in accumulated total,  only practiced for 3 months.
ahh BJJ is cool

I am in Shotokan Karate and Judo (although less Judo)

I'm considering taking up another art -- I do karate/judo (same dojo) twice a week, and I'm thinking about doing something else once per week

the most conveniently located dojos/gyms are muay thai, bjj, aikido, and hapkido

any recommendatons? (I'd also prefer not to get the hell beaten out of me, because my future depends on my head, and being punchdrunk is not conducive to academics -- that said, I don't mind taking a few hits, especially body ones)

If you have a decent piece of change, I would recommend taking both muay thai and bjj if possible. I know I haven't been exactly modest about the amount of money I have, but I will tell you right now I am spending about $400/mo on martial arts right now; but to be honest I suck. I get tapped out every single time I am there and have only tapped out 3 people ever, and they were all white belts. I get tapped out by white belts all the time as well. But I have noticed a major improvement, but I am starting muay thai as soon as my shoulder heals up.

Take them both, they can both be applied to the street.
I don't have the cash for that....nowhere close haha
I'd rather get me something of a ground game because I already have a very strong background in a striking art -- I've been a student of shotokan karate for 9 years and I plan to continue towards my black belt. I need to cram train before I go off for university, because the earlist age you can get a black belt in my dojo is 18. That said, I'm beating/getting the better of black belts a fair amount of the time, so i think it should come before I actually ship off at the end of next summer. I do have some judo, as my sensei is a blackbelt in it (some throwing, some jointlocks and submissions -- nothing advcanced), but my ground game is minimal, especially compared to the emphasis my training has put on striking.

So: I want ground game/throws/takedown defense. Muay thai would be interesting for a different approach to striking, but I think it would ultimately be the least worthwhile. For me, it's really between aikido (a defense-oriented art), hapkido (which I don't know all that much about), and bjj
