Abu Treika African player of the year is the heart of Egypt. Usually not a big supporter of Egypt or South Africa in fact they are the two teams I never support in the African tournaments. Hope at least one of them make it far in this competition.

extremely sluggish first half. brazil made us pay. came out better in the second half. sacha klejstan got sent off. maicon scored from a ridiculous angle off a deflection. feilhaber and casey both hit the crossbar late.
a lot of stupid, sloppy play, but we aren't going to beat teams like this without playing an extremely solid game. hopefully we can get these things at least partially shored up before the WC

I didn't see the first half of the Italy v Egypt game, but the 2nd half was pretty poor. The only reason Italy didn't win was because Egypts keeper was blocking everything Italy were throwing at them.
I reckon they'll make it through but lose to South Africa, who I think will also qualify.

I'm annoyed i missed it too and im not too fussed Spain lost as even though their media will ridicule them for losing against the US, i doubt it'll affect them much and if anything it'll help them , so that they don't act like arrogant dicks in the world cup against lesser opposition. Hopefully America actually being in the final of a Global may raise a bit of awareness about football over there.

it is a gradual thing for football to start taking over in america, but winning a big competition like this is the quickest way to jump start popularity in the country. there will be people who never watch football who will watch the final. if we win, you could easily see rating for the next couple years pick up for national team games and mls games. its not like winning the world cup, but it will definitely do a big number on making the sport more popular here. it would probably take winning the world cup to get football ahead of basketball and american football in this country though.

this is the second time we've ever beaten the number one ranked team. this is the first time we've ever been in the final of an international tournament. sure, it's the confederation's cup. in fact, i wouldn't have cared if we would've gone out at the group stages, but still, it's kind of a big deal for us.

It is USA's greatest achievement. The tournament is not a big deal, you are right, but this is right up there with USA's greatest ever result.

thankfully deuce finally played himself back into form. earlier in the tournament:
it was a nice experience. we (kind of) showed that we can compete and that we at least want to win sometimes. bob bradley has hopefully learned a little bit from this tournament. maybe that, hey, it's alright to play with two strikers, maybe two strikers that can kind of form a rational partnership, and not a young, strong, kind of fast striker with an older, strong, slow striker. the biggest thing i'd like to see bob bradley do with this team is find a way to integrate jose torres w/o completely fucking up our team chemistry. i would love to see him in the role that benny played in this tournament

he is one of three pure strikers we had on the roster. he's not going to add a spark to the team, but i can see why he was brought on. i was just happy to see bob bradley realize that this:

jose torres was arguably our best player for the first half against costa rica. he gets pulled off at half. gets dropped for the honduras game. gets added onto our roster for the confed cup. doesn't see a minute. you can't apply the no-playing time w/club rule to him. i guess you could argue that his style of play doesn't necessarily fit in w/our team, but with playing benny feilhaber, i don't think that this is necessarily the case.
i was less angry w/the adu situation when we at least stuck fucking charlie davies up top w/jozy.
jose torres has a great argument to at least get a fucking chance. not that adu doesn't, but i just think that jose's argument is a little stronger.

he's still very young. if he can establish himself this next year w/a club (any club), he'd have a very good chance to play an important part in the wc. iirc, both ld and dmb were brought along very late in the cycle for 2002. he doesn't have the physical presence to run into our NT like a jozy altidore. if he goes to benfica (or anywhere. villareal has been interested lately) and lights it up, he'll play.

unfortunately, clark is probably going to be an afterthought when/if jermaine jones is brought into camp. as much as i'm excited about jermaine jones, i like rico a lot. i don't think davies has an assured spot, especially not if adu can prove himself in the next year (he's on the gc squad btw). his pace will cause a lot of problems for any team, but he's still extremely raw (and not all that young). onyewu has been particularly solid lately. he's gotten over his tendency to randomly clear the ball straight to the foot of the other team w/i 25 yards of goal (tomas rosicky). not getting skull-fucked by david villa (a player with the skill set that would have run over him 2-3 years ago in any game) during the confed cup makes me think that he may have turned a corner. spector makes me glad that the marvell wynne experiment is over. if he can stay healthy, he will be an extremely solid player for us.

i don't think the hex is the place for experimentation. what he did at costa rica was fucking retarded. he gave a few players a run out earlier in qualifying. i think he's giving a few players the opportunity to win a spot at the gold cup, which is fine, considering that this gc doesn't mean a god damned thing.

removed from the whole it's in the same country as the world cup, the year before the world cup, with a squad that will better resemble our 2010 squad, against a wider variety of competition, etc.

Obviously, Wynne has rockets for legs. But you've hit the crux of it: he can't play soccer. Ricketts can, and well at that. I saw him live like 4 days ago. He moves with the ball so well. Him and Zidane were the only players worth watching, really.

he was definitely a project, and he has enough to speed to still be very useful in the mls. with that kind of speed, he had a very, very high ceiling if anyone could actually get him to play a little bit

The US plays some ugly ass soccer. Probably the most unattractive soccer I've seen in a long, long time. Combining more than 3 passes together is nearly impossible, especially after crossing the half way line.
On another note, they have to play like that because they lack any kind of talent when compared to other teams. We saw what happened in the first two matches when they tried to "play."
I wish Adu played a little, but creativity and potential has no place on this team right now.

creativity doesn't make you a great player, and there are some glaring deficiencies in his game. what we are doing now kind of works.
if we can park jermaine jones in front of our back four, landon doesn't play like shit, and onyewu can at least clear the ball out of bounds; we could have a pretty decent world cup, especially if we can find a left-back and get our situation up front straightened out
