Title: Life after death after life?
Post by: Mr. T on Jan 17, 2009, 02:45: PM
What do you think happens after your body and brain stops functioning and dies? What happens with the conciousness? Will it just disappear, because the brain dies, or do you think it'll be transfered to a new organism/homo sapiens etc. etc.?

Personally I find it more likely that nothing happens when you're dead (because the conciousness is a function in the brain, and when the brain dies the conciousness does too, etc. etc.). I don't know (obviously, no one does). But I want to know what you guys think about this.

It's irrelevant. Just make the most out of this life.

But functionally I think not. Our life after death is dictated by the imprint we make during this life -- what we write, do, and say.

I intend to leave volumes of prose and poetry as a testament to my life. That and the memories of those who knew me.

Either that or be immortalized as a legend through some radically awesome death.  :pimp:

But I'm more focused on life at the moment.

well i think it is actually a practical idea that when you die that you are reborn into another organism without even realizing either of the to organisms existed. the everything just goes blank idea is probably the most realistic idea. its just kind of a depressing way to think of it. i'm not trying to sound offensive to anyone who is religious with this next statement. the most unrealistic idea is probably the idea that your soul goes to a place like heaven, hell, etc.  this just doesn't as probable.  anything could be correct, and we won't ever know really.

i always hoped that we get our concious moved 2 another body without having any rememberance of the past body. it seems stupid but it would be nicer than never existing again. i cant imagine not existing, its just too weird.

Well, what I believe is that you go nowhere.. as if after die, there's nothing of you, cause the brain dies along with our body, and we are all the memories and decissions that we have taken, which are in the brain.. so as I said, we all might go nowhere after dying..

Hope you get what I'm saying.. it's hard to explain in english
btw, this is just my point of view, as everyone said, nobody knows the truth

i don't know.  i can't say.  i'm going to go with nowhere.  of course, i'm sure this will change as i grow older and become "more selfish"

I follow what Islam teaches. every body has a soul
when the body dies, the soul will leave the body. the body will be nothing but a corpse, including the brain etc. then after that, it all depends on what you did in this life. this life is just a test, so if you pass it, then
if not, then  :hello:

If you don't believe in consequences after death than why do you follow man made rules and laws?; Instead of living fast and dieing young. If I didn't have my religion I would probably be a criminal making major money. Don't fear other men.

Secondly do you think that all these mass murderers, pedophiles and oppressors in this world will just die and be the same as everyone else? How unfair would that be to everyone else that lived good and righteous.

This life isn't a big game.

like I said, this life's a test
it's just ppl don't want to believe in the truth
that's one of the reasons for a judgment day, innit?
Title: Re: Life after death after life?
Post by: TheGodEmperor on Jan 18, 2009, 03:16: AM
well judgment day depends on belief as well

technically, you shouldn't need an incentive to lead a good life...that means you're not a moral person for morality's sake, but for your own sake.

Read some Immanuel Kant. Although his philosophy of ethics is bogus, he does get a few things right in there. For example: if you're leading a good life with the aim of having a great afterlife (paradise, or whatever you believe), then you're actually leading a self-centered life.

So. Lead a good life for it's own sake. Worry about life after death on your deathbed, or not at all.

Theres nothing wrong with being religious and believing in heaven and hell. If it makes you a better person...than it should be considered a good thing.

I believe in heaven and hell. But we will never know until that day comes. Obviously.

Then what is morality? Does in arise as a result of a self-centered fear of purgatpry/ambition for paradise, or as a result of conviction, etc...?

thats bullshit. I could posit any number of theories for morality that do not require the existence of a god. A god is an incentive to be moral, and not always the best one.

In Islam, Fitrah is the inherent disposition towards virtue in humanity, and what endows people with the ability to differentiate between right and wrong. According to the Quran, it is the original state in which humans are created by Allah (God).
Allah describes the fitrah of the human soul in the Quran by saying: …and by the soul and He who perfected it! Then He inspired to it (the ability to understand) what is good for it and what is evil for it. Successful is he who purifies it, and failure is he who corrupts it.

Muslims believe every child is born with fitrah, including non-Muslims, and that without external influence, these children would come to worship Allah on their own. As such, every child is born Muslim. Prophet Muhammad emphasized this in a hadith where he said: “Every child is born with the believing nature (al-fitra), it is his parents who make him into a Jew or a Christian.”

you're jewish, right? so I'm curious as to what the jews believe on this subject about morality.

As true as that argument may be that is also true when applied against your own argument, and who cares what happens after you die if its nothing its nothing if i go to hell or whatever for not being religious then it'll still be more interesting than nothing so its win-win

It's OK not being serious when talking about religion, since religion itself is not a serious matter.

you could post theories for morality. But in the end they are all just theories...
Was that a serious post, or did you just want to be funny?

My guess is you're serious and I'm going to reply in line to that.

A theory is not defined as "something that might just be", it's a conclusion you've come up with after analysis, measurements, logic, etc., etc. A theory is, scientificly speaking, something you use to make something trustworthy, and thus not the opposit. Discarding something because it's based on theories is really one of the worst case scenarios you may experience.
Look here for further reading http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theory .

For me, there's no hell nor heaven. When you die you just stop function and that's end of story.

Why does life have to be fair?
Why are you so afraid of not existing? Not existing must be the coolest way to "be", since you don't exist.

Im not scared of not existing...i just believe we go somewhere when we die, whether it be heaven or hell.

Cause some really good story tellers that got ahold of weak people's minds that were looking for something to believe in, got it twisted and believed they can float in the clouds. monkeys have tails.  no hominid to my recollection have ever had tails.  we branched off from that long before we branched off from apes to become hominids.

royalfreakiness, i hope ur not serious.  evolution is a proven thing, it can even be observed and tracked.

humans are animals.  in the grand scheme of things we are no better than the rest of the animal kingdom.  for that matter, we're no better than the rest of the other organisms like plants, fungi, bacteria, and others.

if anything, survival wise, we're a lot worse than a lot of them.

but we're animals nonetheless.  we have cells, we have organs, we have a heart and brain... we ingest other organisms for sustenance and we definitely procreate just like any other animals.

to think we're better and that we're somehow exempt from the laws of evolution, is extremely arrogant and ignorant.

Evolution hasnt been observed. An organism changing into another, such as a ape into a human (using as an example) has not been observed.

this isn't a theory.  modern evolutionary synthesis is a theory.  evolution is not a theory

uhh yes, it does

there is no difference between what you consider "variation" ("micro-evolution" -- a relatively outdated term) and "macro-evolution" (large scale evolution)

look, your information comes from the same people who still push vitalism, believe that the earth is 6000 y/o, and dig up relatively arcane terms in a vain attempt to differentiate b/w large-scale change in species and changes within a population.  the evidence to the contrary is overwhelming, and in most cases, irrefutable (in cases that it is not, it is generally due to a lack of information, not information to the contrary).  these people will continue to stretch their rigid intrepretations of the Bible (a book written 2000 fucking years ago) to their very limit to argue against the very logical and religious-neutral progression of events as described by science (along the same vein of logic, don't pick up the atheist's primer to science either).

pick up a biology textbook, realize that it has NO agenda against your religion, and read through it.  i think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

we're animals, not some extraterrestial being.  could we have a god?  sure.  if he's there, he's beyond reason, and it would be foolish to think that he couldn't have dictated the progression of events that led to the situation as it is.

theres that nasty word again....belief

I mean, theres all kinds of geological evidence stating that the earth is billions of years old...six thousand years ago, Sumer was flourishing -- 2.5 million years ago homo erectus was doing the same, and 4 000 000 years ago, australopithecus africanus was exhibiting traits that would later define the hominid group, and 6-8 000 000 years ago, ardepithecus ramidus was exhibiting traits that would later define the australopithecine group

Evolution occurs through genetic mutations, natural selection, and sexual selection over a very long period of time. But then, jono/freakiness, I don't doubt that you've ever actually read about evolution, but I will wager that you've read it's refutations...not a good way of going about things, keeping an open mind, etc...

we've been able to find carbon materials in rocks in greenland, suggesting microscopic life in the precambrian period.  only the stupidest of idiots will believe the earth is less than 10 thousand years old.

also, oldest living organism

I don't believe that the earth is 6000 years old. We really can't prove how old it is. Saying that I also don't believe my ancestors where Apes, fish or Bacteria its a ludicrous statement. To just assume the earth, the planets and the moon just happened accidentally. Its too complex and perfect of a system, Just looking at the human body is too complex to have happened accidentally.

At the end of the day your quick to dismiss religion as just being 'a theory that someone came up with'. What about all these other theories that are named after the people that came up with them. Aren't they just theories also there is proof of the person came up with it.

there isn't really any "not-proof" (if i can say this) either. it is what it is.

i agree for the most part

religion isn't theory.  a theory is a concept that hasn't been fully verified (which religion can't really be), but if verified would explain phenomena.

I get what you mean elias

If we evolved from fish, bacteria...wateva we came from billions and billions years ago. That means trees, plants, the elements etc, would of had to come from the same substance what we evolved from. Does this mean we are related to rocks and trees? Has there been any documentation of a rock evolving into a tree? Or a banana into a dog? Hmmmm....

evolution is a term that refers to living organisms.  non living things don't evolve.  non living matter can change in its structure, be broken down or fused together and built up, etc. etc. etc. but they don't evolve because the term doesn't apply to them.  non living matter does not live, they do not reproduce, they do not need to survive for anything.

but as i've said if u've had half the brain to look...

go back far enough and everything's related to everything else.  we can prove what happened to almost the very beginning of the universe, we just can't prove what happened just before that to cause it.

the bible is a joke.  the simple fact that the visible universe is 15 billion light years shatter the "theory" that the universe is 6000 years old.

the bible is a fictional piece of literature that cults worship stupidly.  the only good thing it offers, if any, are moral lessons.  we don't need the bible for that.

it's useless.

i don't really believe in the big bang because of the perfection of our world, etc. i agree with this much. but you are making yourself sound foolish.

we "come" from ribosomoly similar bacteria billions of years ago. the way i see it, honestly, is that our designer created the world and just let it spin.

of course, just because we have similar bone structure, etc. doesn't really prove anything. it's more of an inference. because if there is a god, he may have just wanted to make everything "similar"

now that's arguing smarter than the other idiot.  that still wouldn't be called evolution.  that's the mystery of the origin of life which of course science cannot claim it knows yet.  i think on certain levels tho, it makes sense chemically.'

the world was created like this

and we are going to evolve into what we will evolve into, in the future.  we can't say what yet because it has never existed yet.

but from my best guess, all humans or at least most of them will probably die before we are able to evolve into another species.  overpopulation is doing us in good.

evolution did not stop.  it's just very slow.  it happens with each successive generations.

it most certainly does not.  worship implies total committment and blind faith to an absolute truth that may or may not be.  worship implies surrendering ones own powers and values and it also implies dependency.

that sounds much more like a lack of philosophical understanding and direction to me.

so, an absence of commiting yourself 100% to something that may not be true (but of course is only by faith) is true philosophical understanding?

you're a slave to something you can't prove, but only rely on faith to believe in. nothing wrong with faith and belief, but when you say worship, you are implying complete and total complience with the divine.

we are not that unique.  if you understood anything about what we are u would not say that.  and the word primitive shouldn't carry the negative connotations you imply.

i never said it was an accident.  science never says it was an accident.  nobody said that.

science isn't a thing, but a process.  it is a study of.  what we don't know, we don't know.  what we might know, we might know.  what we know, we know.

unlike some things i know that thinks it knows what it doesn't know.

we are not that unique.  if you understood anything about what we are u would not say that.  and the word primitive shouldn't carry the negative connotations you imply.
Primitive: very simple in design: crudely simple in design or construction

i never said it was an accident.  science never says it was an accident.  nobody said that.

you ppl still think the Qur'an was written
we give you the answer, you still close your minds
we believe it's Allah's words sent down to Prophet Muhammad through Angel Jibreel
then later, it was written down by Companions of the Prophet so it won't be lost

2 of the thousand proofs that the Qur'an was the word of God:
1. Allah challenged every creature to make a book like the Qur'an
then create a chapter like any of the Qur'an
then create a chapter like the smallest chapter (which consists of three small verses)
then create a VERSE like any

until now, nothing was successful, ppl have been trying to challenge it for more than 1400 years till now
2. Allah has promised to keep the Qur'an safe from distortion
(it's still as it is)

and btw, many have tried to scientifically prove that the Qur'an is scientifically incorrect
and... you all know what happened...
they failed miserably

just look at that faggot professor William Campbell when he tried to prove the Qur'an is a fake when he challenged Dr. Zakir Naik
he ended up swallowing his own saliva and ended with errrs....

and other ppl tried to challenge Zakir Naik saying that Islam is a wrong religion, they all ended up like  :-[
And Zakir Naik is just a fellow preacher, he's not the most knowledgeable in Islam... so...
you might try to make a fool of us on here but not Islam

another fact that the Quran has been preserved in its original form for so long and all over

and The Well of Zamzam should be the 8th Wonder of the World

Well i wouldn't be entirley sure about that i mean it is an amazing claim to make and most likely in my mind untrue.

Lets take for example the first of what i call changes or possible changes to the Quran, the killing of many of the companions in the Rida, this even if there were many companions must have surely lead to some kind of knowledge gap between the original teachings and what was memorised by the companions.
Second the compiling of the first written Quran by caliph Uthman (may be wrong about it being first written but its the roots for the modern Qurani believe)  Caliph Uthman collected together all variations of the Quaran which he deemed unacceptable etc and burnt them, now he may have done this to preserve the original ideas who knows.
Thirdly this quote "owing to the fact that the kufic script in which the Koran was originally written contained no indication of vowels or diacritical points, variant readings are recognized by Muslims as of equal authority." (N.J. Dawood, The Koran, Middlesex, England: Penguin Books, 1983, p 10, introduction to Dawood’s translation of the Koran)
this quote "the Reading of Abu `Amr in the version of al-Duri ... prevails in the Sudan, Nigeria, and Central Africa." (Labib as-Said, The Recited Koran: A History of the First Recorded Version, tr. B. Weis, et al, Princeton, New Jersey: The Darwin Press, 1975, p. 84)

Now im not saying that the Quran has  been changed i just take offense when Muslims claim it has obviously neve ever been modified in any way.

i've directly referenced evidence of speciation.  if you want, i can find you evidence of one species turning into one or more different species.

Now im not saying that the Quran has  been changed i just take offense when Muslims claim it has obviously neve ever been modified in any way.
there was an original Qur'an written at the time of Abu Bakr
Abu Bakr appointed Zayd ibn Thabit to collect the proper verses
Zayd was one of the few who were literate, he memorized the whole Qur'an during the Prophet's time, and he used to write down verses of the Qur'an while the Prophet recited it to him
Zayd went around to collect proper verses, if it was the same as his then he would record it
so I don't think there would be any mistake in it
and plus, Allah has promised to keep it as it is till the end of time, and so far no change to it. I mean if no one was able to change it during the 1400 years, then I don't believe the ppl who memorized it will forget any of the Qur'an in like 5 years after the Prophet died, coz they used to read it every day
it would stay in their hearts
that's another miracle of the Qur'an, it was made to be easily memorized, and it is easy

and back to evolution, I'm still not convinced (even by a tiny bit) that it's a fact. it's all  :bs:
do you ppl think that either we will be extinct or we will keep evolving until we're some sort of homo-faggotaurus or something  :dontknow:
coz I believe in an end of time, the 2nd coming of the Isa (Jesus) and the false Messiah, when everything will die, this earth will be turned to dust and then the day of Judgement

Don't waste your time with ignorant masses. The Quran can easily be memorized. I know ordinary dudes who know the whole Quran by heart and they don't read it no where near a daily basis. At some points I memorized 7 parts out of the 30 its not that hard...... Don't forget I'm not even from an Arabic speaking background.

Secondly we don't disagree with evaluation all together of course organisms have to adapt and evolve over a very long period of time in order to survive. Evolution can be looked at as a means by which Allah diversifies life on earth. Allah alone, for instance, causes a nucleotide base to be deleted or added in a DNA sequence, thereby causing a frame shift mutation, which leads to the birth of a new species, which represents an evolutionary superior to its genetic predecessor, which passes on its DNA to its progeny, which results in a subsequent mutation, ad infinitum. Allah not only starts this process but He also sustains and directs every second of its execution and development. Islam does not reject aspects of Evolution.

But an Ape evolving into a human being please don't waste my time with that crap.

If Darwin was correct than how come we humans still haven't develop into something more intelligent and physically different than we are today?..... Humans have been around for a very very long time now. How come we haven't evolved further??  Smarten up.

we've only been around for 160 000 years.  that's just a blip in evolutionary history.  although, we are markedly different from the first humans (which you have addressed, but let me say again, there is no difference b/w "microevolution--which you have described" and "macroevolution")

even if we haven't "evolved," there have been well documented cases of speciation--new species being formed

The new species it talks of is hybrids, crossing two different species. Just the same as a mule where you cross a donkey with a horse. They cannot produce offspring though. It doesnt talk about new species that arose in the environment from evolution... This is just scientists crossing organisms to see what they get.

Forgive me if i missed an area where they could.

the only problem with bringing in this link, conner, is that these concepts aren't readily understandible, where i'm sure you don't even have a full grasp of it all. so yes, there is a lot of evidence to prove various different things, but it's not so black and white to where we can understand exactly what it means.

and i think a big reason why people reject some scientific findings is that they don't want to try to understand or they think scientists act in an overly esoteric way, so they just block it all out.

yeah, but this isn't something that i'm overwhelmingly interested in (or know an overwhelming amount of shit about).  so, i can't really be fucked to dig up a bunch of shit.

these are pretty easy, and if they aren't, it's pretty easy to look up what's in question.

the information is out there, and if it's not, it's a short trip to the library away.  i posted a pretty basic primer on evolution earlier that included a few basic examples of speciation, or speciation set in motion.

of course, and i think that everyone should read into these matters. i used to brush science away [i never worshiped a book though] but with research and reading i find that it's not very farfetched at all that intelligent design, or god, can co-exist with evolution.

Hahahaha

Impossible you can't be a Muslim and worship anything else besides god and god alone.

A year ago I was working next to the church of Scientology. So I decided to drop in one day and have a healthy religious discussion with one of the officials inside. He told me he knows a Muslim/Scientology family. I couldn't help but laugh.

And just to add...just because there are things in science that go against what i believe, dont mean i dont like to learn about it. I really do enjoy learnin about science.

parts of 5.0, but 5.1-on was probably more of what you were looking for.

don't let the information i quickly found on google hold you back.  just google and read.  the textbook laboratory example is on the berkeley link i posted earlier.

wooowwwwwwww I just came back from a three day trip, and some of the shit said in here is absolutely retarded

Starting off, everyone who assumes tenets to evolution wrongly (aka jono and tito) clearly knows nothing about the actual facts and have a completely one-sided point of view, thereby rendering anything they say as verbal diarrhea. I mean, I didn't know that people like you even existed

@Jono, if you're in 1st year medsci and you still don't understand evolution, then I can understand why our healthcare system is so bad, I mean, god DAYUMMM

I'm fairly sure all the evolution stuff has been covered by ed, so imma move on to the q'uran issues:

a: tito, the q'uran has a whole fuckload of holes in it, just like the bible. In fact, the q'uran is a mishmash of biblical tradition, mysticism, and imperialism, while the bible draws references from such classical works as the Sumerian Epic of Gilgamesh, etc...By nature, every religious text is full of holes, because it's viewpoint is utterly onesided and therefore imperfect. In addition, you say that a god transcends all human understanding, and yet we try to encompass It in a religious text, thereby committing gross anthropmorphism and likening the image of an infinite, eternal godhead figure to the human figure, or to concrete objects that humans can encompass intellectually. Arrogant, much?

Tito, I don't know what you think philosophy is, but it's rational, logical discourse to reach a conclusion. Religion is said to 'transcend' logic. Thus, how can religion be philosophical in any way?

Royalfreak, basically, you're making your own beliefs look stupid, so stop posting. Have you ever been exposed to any culture besides Islamic ones for any length of time in your life? Because you are saying 'my way is THE way' while maikng 'your way' sound like sheer idiocy. You should become a preacher just so people see the stupidity of blind faith.

thats a start...

firstly, point to me the holes in Qur'an
tell me the wrongs of it
prove to me that it's scientifically wrong
come on, I'm waiting
2ndly, I don't see any problem with saying my way is correct, yours is wrong
or are you trying to say that Christians and Jews say that everyone will go to heaven?
there's only one right path
and that's why a Muslim says he's on the right path by following Islam, and a christian says the same about christianity, and same with a Jew and Judaism
so I see no problem in saying my path is right, yours is wrong
and BTW, I laugh at you, coz you always think you're like the wisest one on here

as if you've studied everything in life
come on, go study about your religion first properly
and yes, I have been exposed to many of the other cultures
and many of them, when studied properly from the undistorted part of the religious texts (coz 95% of them were), point out the coming of the last Prophet (Muhammad) and one God.
go read the Vedas of the Hindus, it describes the coming of Prophet Muhammad
talks about his mother, his father, the land where he will be born etc...
you always think Muslims are not learned ppl, like we blindly follow Islam...
there are a lot of Scientists (atheists and others) who while studying science and Islam, reverted to Islam
I'm hoping one day through your studies you'll be like them or at least think differently about us

lastly, stop saying that the Qur'an was a copy of the Bible... please just stop, ok.... you have NO proof at all that it was, it's only wishful thinking

dude did you even read my post? Thats not at all what I said...but I'll address your points as if it were, because you're a retard

Unfortunately, I don't have a q'uran on hand, but I can tell you right off the bat that the whole notion of intelligent design is scientifically incorrect. I never said that only muslims say that their way is THE way, but in this thread, it happens to be Muslims who are saying it. If a Jew said it, I'd react in the exact same way, which I have in the past. From what you've shown hare so far, all you've done is been fed line upon line upon line of religious pseudo-interpretation, and you've taken it as truth without question. My study of religion (which, especially within the context of my own and christianity has been quite extensive) is infused with a healthy dosage of doubt so as to head off side effect of blind faith and being like you.

 @ your usage of 'undistorted.' I mean, if you meant to say 'distorted' then it would've sounded half-logical...I mean, if I were to study a text using contextually invalid and shoddy literary technique, I could conclude that each text shows that christ was a lecher, but theres no point in that, because anybody with half a brain and a knowledge of context and literary theory can see that such interpretation is groundless.

I never said that all Muslims are blind. I think YOU are blind. In fact, I lean towards the conclusion that all religious people are blind, although I've found a few exceptions...

I never said the q'uran was a copy of the bible, I said that it was influenced by the bible, which is only natural...look the figures of Abraham and Ishmael, look at the monotheistic similarities, look at the similarities in food laws...both are legitimate, and great, although flawed texts, written by some of the greatest minds oin human history, but they are both unworthy of human worship.

I don't "assume" that Allah exists, or that the Qur'an is the Word of God
I know that they are true
that's what faith is all about
there is no room for doubt
and don't tell me this is blind following
there's a lot of proof in the Qur'an and Hadith of the Prophet to believe that what I'm following is true

Oh now your playing a dangerous game. Go on clever boy show me a single hole. I challenge you.
for more than 1400 years that's what non-Muslims have been trying to do
what makes this retard think he can prove the Qur'an false when he doesn't even have a copy of it...
he doesn't even know what lies in it... he doesn't even know how it started, coz he still thinks Prophet Muhammad had a bible next to him and thought of ways to make a nice bed time story with good etiquettes and ways to live a life...
come on professor, any proof? hmm?? if you care so much to make us lead a "free" way of life, go get yourself a copy of the translation of the Qur'an, put it next to great science books and religious text, then see how "false" the Qur'an is, or look for "holes"
I dare you and the WHOLE WORLD INCLUDING THE UNSEEN. that's Allah's and the Muslims' challenge to all of you ppl who still doubt the Truth of the Qur'an

dude did you even read my post?

I never said the q'uran was a copy of the bible, I said that it was influenced by the bible, which is only natural...look the figures of Abraham and Ishmael, look at the monotheistic similarities, look at the similarities in food laws...both are legitimate, and great, although flawed texts, written by some of the greatest minds oin human history, but they are both unworthy of human worship.
you still say it was written by Muhammad and his companions....  :booty:
and who the eff said we worship the book!???
 :cursing:
how am I blind?
read this again
"and many of them, when studied properly from the undistorted part of the religious texts (coz 95% of them were)"
can't you understand it?
many of the text were distorted, and the ones that weren't point out proofs of One true God and the coming of Prophet Muhammad and talks about the ten commandments etc
those weren't distorted and were original text sent down by God
Qur'an was the only one that wasn't changed at all, and it will stay as it is, as Allah promised

so many assumptions

does allah exist? And I'm saying the these texts were contextually misinterpreted...

also, all of these texts were written by people, so unless they logically prove something, they are essentially valueless to everyone except for people like you who feel the need to mold everything to their narrow worldview
It's not proof...I mean you need to have logically established the existence of a god for yourself in order not to be a blind believer...I mean I am very poetically inclined, so you might think that I'd believe in a god, and I've fluctuated in and out of belief for years. But the one thing I know for sure is the supremacy of words that create the conception of a god within the bible, within the q'uran, within our minds, within our poetry...we are the creators, god or no

If he knew anything about the Quran he wouldn't be saying the bible influenced the Quran. Because the Quran states that the Bible was also the word of God before parts of it had been modified.. So ofcourse there is going to be similarities.

Don't attack something you know nothing about.

tf10, you're a fool for insulting the quran. why? because with regard to thier belief, you probably couldn't show them a hole (and i'm assuming this because you still havn't done so). i also don't know why you've come here to attack them, or Jews, about thier beliefs..

now, granted, you're right to say that there is an imbalance in a biased and one sided view point. and you're also right to say that tito and royal are speaking rather narrow mindedly. that being said, the concept of faith (in a certain religion and god [islam, allah]) for the truely devoted means that they fully stand by what they believe in.

and with this being said, if thier religion teaches the understanding that allah created the quran, then why fight it? why fight the "holes" that you claim to be able to find? even if you could find them, are you out here to convert them into whatever it is you believe in?

fighting religion with science is one of the weirdest things to do; and of course the many concrete and some implied evidences of science are hard to be disproven, but the way i see it now, is to just let it go homie, because they are instilled to believe that there is no god but allah, and mohamed is his prophet.

i'm not familiar with how it works in (wherever you are from), but here you usually go to University first to get a degree in biological sciences, chemistry, etc. and you learn about a LOT of things (ecology and evolution included)

i want 2 hear of these holes in the bible. i use 2 try 2 find holes in the bible too, but my teacher always had somthing.
so, go 4 it, unless ur willing 2 take back that remark.

and it doesnt matter who rote it physically, it matters that its still the word of God. yes, in the NKJ version of the bible, 7 chapters r excluded, but there r still recognised that they were taken out to all religious ppl.

I'm not fighting religion with science, I'm fighting religious books with ideology...and I'm not attacking the q'uran, I'm treating it as a text like any other, and drawing its influences, etc...I do the same thing with the bible

I attack faith because it scares the hell out of me....many things that have been done as a result of faith are horrendous, and faith isolates man from man and creates inequality of perception. This occurs only when it is a large scale organized religion, and a symbol is required to keep such a group even a little cohesive -- some use idols, some use books. Both can be analyzed as works of art, which they are. Burt remember, all works of art are the result of a DEVIATION from blind faith into an entirely intellectual faith of their own, an individual faith

you cannot treat a holy book the same because it is implied that everything in the book is right. the book is designed for the reader as a follower, not as a spectator or one trying to draw conclusions. if the reader is a follower, then the reader is in 100% concurrence with the book. that is what it is designed for. don't read it and draw conclusions from it if you don't follow the religion for obvious reasons.

for those who say the quran was written by Muhammad

He has let loose the two seas, converging together, with a barrier between them they do not break through.

Qur'an, 55:19-20

this means the barrier between salt and fresh water

a person in the deserts of Arabia 1426 years ago, could he have known this

And it is We Who have constructed the heaven with might, and verily, it is We Who are steadily expanding it. (Qur'an, 51:47)

Big Bang thoery states the universe is expanding and this was found out a few years ago

now tell me could Muhammad a person who lived 1,426 years ago known this?

we then formed the drop into a clot and formed the clot into a lump and formed the lump into bones and clothed the bones in flesh; and then brought him into being as another creature. Blessed be Allah, the Best of Creators! (Qur'an, 23:14)

Could Muhammed who could not read or write have known the stages a baby goes through when in the womb

can you see it? ( I'll answer that) NO

does allah exist?
Yes
Can you see Him, No

So if you say Allah isn't real then what case do you have that suggests an Atom is real?

On another note Science is way behind the Quran
As in that article (link) i posted earlier

Quote
ATOMIC ENERGY AND FISSION

Allah splits the seed and kernel. He brings forth the living from the dead, and produces the dead out of the living. That is Allah, so how are you misguided? (Qur'an, 6:95)

The terms "seed" (al-habb) and "kernel" (an-nawa) in the above verse may indicate the splitting of the atom. Indeed, the dictionary meanings of an-nawa include "nucleus, centre, atomic nucleus." Furthermore, the description of bringing forth the living from the dead can be interpreted as Allah creating matter from dead energy. Producing the dead out of the living may refer to energy (dead) emerging from matter (living), since the atom is in motion. (Allah knows best.) That is because as well as "living," al-hayy can also mean "active, energetic." With its meaning of "non-living," al-mayyit, translated above as "dead," may very probably refer to energy.

Scientists define energy as the capacity for doing work. Matter, the material that comprises all things on Earth and in the universe, consists of atoms and molecules that can be seen to be in motion under an electron microscope. In the early twentieth century, Albert Einstein (d. 1955) theorised that matter could be converted into energy, suggesting that the two were inter-related at the atomic level.199 This may be the bringing forth of the dead from the living, as described above, or, in other words, obtaining energy from matter, which is in motion at the atomic level. In addition, yukhriju, translated as "bringing forth," also means "bringing out, emitting" (as in the case of electrical waves). Therefore, the terms in this verse may be indicating the form of energy obtained from the atom. (Allah knows best.)

And technology

Quote
THE USE OF ELECTRICITY

And We made a fount of molten copper flow out for him. (Qur'an, 34:12)

One of Allah's great blessings to Prophet Sulayman (as) was "a fount of molten copper." This can be understood in several senses. By the use of melted copper, it may be referring to the existence, at his time, of an advanced technology that employed electricity. We know that copper is one of the best metals for conducting electricity and heat, and thus constitutes the basis of the electrical industry, which uses much of the copper produced in the world. The expression "flow out" may indicate that electricity can be used in many fields. (Allah knows best.)

Quote
MODERN MEANS OF TRANSPORT

And horses, mules, and donkeys both to ride and for adornment. And He creates other things you do not know. (Qur'an, 16:8)

The above verse indicates that in addition to the animals mentioned here, people will have various unknown (to them) means of transport. The following verse points to the fact that there will be such mass modes of transport as ships:

A Sign for them is that We carried their families in the laden ship. And We have created for them the like of it, in which they sail. (Qur'an, 36:41-42)

Man on moon?

Quote
THE EXPLORATION OF SPACE

Humanity's exploration of space was accelerated with the Soviet satellite Sputnik on 4 October 1957, which launch is considered by NASA as the dawn of the “Space Age.” The first man to ever leave the Earth's atmosphere was the Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin who made his space flight in 1961 in Vostok 1 spacecraft. On 20 July 1969, the American astronaut Neil Armstrong became the first human being ever to set foot on the Moon.

In fact, the Qur'an revealed that such developments and achievements would one day be realised. For instance, Allah draws our attention to this in the following verse:

O company of jinn and human beings. If you are able to pierce through the confines of the heavens and Earth, pierce through them. You will not pierce through, except with a clear authority. (Qur'an, 55:33)

The Arabic word sultan, translated here as "a clear authority," has other meanings as well: force, power, sovereignty, dominion, law, path, permission, give leave, justify, and proof.

Careful examination reveals that the above verse emphasizes that humanity will be able to move into the depths of Earth and sky, but only with a superior power. In all likelihood, this superior power is the superior technology employed in the twentieth century, for it enabled scientists to achieve this great feat.

THE VOYAGE TO THE MOON

And [I swear by] the moon when it is full, you will mount up stage by stage! What is the matter with them, that they have no faith? (Qur'an, 84:18-20)

After referring to the Moon, the above verses then say that people will mount up stage by stage. The term tarkabunna comes from the verb rakiba, (to mount, walk on a path, follow, embark upon, set about, participate, or rule). In the light of these meanings, it is very likely that the expression "you will mount up stage by stage" refers to a vehicle to be boarded.

Indeed, the astronauts' spacecraft pass through each layer of the atmosphere one by one, and then begin to pass through the Moon's gravitational field. Thus, the Moon is reached by moving through individual layers. In addition, the swearing by the Moon in Surat al-Inshiqaq 18 further strengthens this emphasis, meaning that the verse may well be a sign that humanity will travel to the Moon. (Allah knows best.)

Tito; you don't apply science on the Quran, you apply contens of the Quran on science that already has been theorized. Without the science we've achieved those extracts wouldn't have been interpretated in that way. The only way the Quran would be ahead of science is if you actually read the Quran and from there made the conclusion that there are atoms and then proved it (before science did so).

The thing with those extracts is that they are heavily interpretated in a way they sound related to science, eventhough I sincerely doubt that were their initial meaning. Unless you show me some undiscovered thing (like the atom) interpretated from the Quran and from that you prove the statement from the Quran scientificly correct, there isn't really anything scientifical about the Quran.

The atom, how do we know it's for real?

We don't, not for sure. Experiments strongly indicates the existance of an atom, but we can never be 100 % sure there's an actual atom there. But that doesn't matter. We just use the atom as an model so things will be easier answered, just as we use gravity to explain why things fall and the movement of the planets.

Evolution isn't something you choose to "believe" in; it's fact. Take maths as an example: let's say you were given the equation 3+x=4. Using some easy logic, you come to the conclusion that x = 1, and that's an definite answer and is not something you choose to believe in.

If you study the Qur'an you will see that the Qur'an does not contradict any established modern scientific fact. This is a true statement. Many have tried to find scientific errors in the Qur'an, but they have failed.

This is what modern science has to say on the topic of zoology, in particular bees. Modern day science tells us that the male bee has only one purpose, and that is to reproduce with the female - there's really no other purpose for a male bee. Now here's the important point - however, the worker bee or the soldier bee is a female bee. She is the one that builds the nest, leaves her home, and goes out in search of food. This what modern science tells us - that we have discovered only recently. Now it takes a specialist in the field to detect the sex of the bee - you cannot look at it from the naked eye - it is impossible, there is no way you can look at it that way. Now let me show you what the Qur'an says about bees. Now, keep one thing in mind here. In the Arabic language, animals are either male or female. Like in English we have the word cow - "the cow in the pasture" - that does not tell us if the cow is male or female. But in Arabic animals are either male or female. There is no gender neutral term for animals. Let's look inside chapter sixteen verse sixty-eight. It says over there:

"and thy Lord taught the bee" (here it is specified a female bee) "to build its cells in hills, on trees, and in men's habitations, then to eat of all the produce and find with skill the spacious paths of its Lord."

This is exactly what modern science today tell us - that the bee that goes out and builds the nest, that goes out looking for food, as what the Qur'an has mentioned, is indeed the female bee.

Quote
IF Statement in the Quran = Scientific fact THEN

(it can be one or more of the following 8 possibilities)

A. Perhaps the author of the statement was a genius.

B. A very good guess, luck.

C. Perhaps the author of the statement was a great scientist

D. Coincidence (ex: a poetic statement which just happened to match
up with science),, and the author had no intention of talking
about science; it was an accident. Coincidence is a form of luck.

E. Common sense (ex: rain causes grass to grow).

F. The scientific fact is observable.

G. The information already pre-existed in history.
(this can only be entertained if we have historical errors)

H. A source greater than man was involved.

So anyway, I'll have to raise a question now. How did the author of the Qur'an know this scientific statement, that the bee that leaves the nest in search of food is the female bee? Let's look at the above quote. Perhaps the author of the Qur'an was a genius or a scientist, which is (A) and (C). Well, I don't think that could be a possibility, because no matter how smart you are, you'll never be able to detect the sex of a bee, unless you had these modern scientific methods which did not exist one thousand four hundred years ago, so those could not be a possibility. Let's look at (F). Perhaps the scientific fact is observable. Well, this is not true either, because you cannot look at the bees and tell which one is a male or female. Let's look at (B). Perhaps it was a very good guess. Well, it is a possibility. If it was a good guess then we'll say it was a fifty-fifty chance, one half chance if that was the case - or coincidence, we can look at it that way. Now let's look at (G) . The information already pre-existed in history, therefore the author of the Qur'an simply plagiarized from another source. That long ago its not possible. So the only solution is (H).

And thats only one small example

Tito; you don't apply science on the Quran, you apply contens of the Quran on science that already has been theorized. Without the science we've achieved those extracts wouldn't have been interpretated in that way. The only way the Quran would be ahead of science is if you actually read the Quran and from there made the conclusion that there are atoms and then proved it (before science did so)
the meaning of them haven't changed
and how could those things even be in something thats over 1400 years old when science recently discovered those.

Preaching science? You can't really do that. You can only point to concrete evidence. Aha, I've caught you out at last, you hypocritical sheep:

You've equated an infinite and all-encompassing being (Allah, god, what have you) with the meanest piece of physical material on the face of this earth. A demeaning anthropmorphism if I've ever seen one. In addition, no book can encompass the nature of an infinite, all-encompassing being without the use of anthropomorphism (both the bible and the quran do it. Even saying that He cannot be enbcompassed is an anthropomorphism), thereby rendering any holy text a misrepresentation of what is truly being worshipped, because such a book, which was clearly written (by whom I know not, be it god or man, though I'd say man) to be read by human beings, is essentially a distortion of the religious truth you seek. Many Islamic and Jewish thinkers have come across this problem, acknowledged it as very daunting, and were only ever able to offer allegorical solutions. An example of a Jewish thinker who encountered this issue: Maimonides. An example of an Islamic thinker who encountered that selfsame issue: Averroes (muslim name was Ibn Rushd, I think).

So yeah

No. They are based on two different things. Religion isn't based on fact, it's based on faith. Science is based on what we as humans call a fact, which is something that can be readily determinable and proven. Again, a lot of science is "implied" [e.g. 2x+2 = 6, the x would equal 4]

Why is it so hard to understand that atoms are not visible? Have you not gone to school? Do you not have books to read about atoms, Tito?

Preaching science? You can't really do that. You can only point to concrete evidence. I don't consider the evidence you are pointing to me about the Quran as concrete; there is absolutely no way to prove that these words are indeed the words of God. If it was so clear cut, i'm sure everyone would be a Muslim.

But let me guess, everyone else is stupid huh
Therefor Science is concrete and anyone that follows religion is stupid?

No. They are based on two different things. Religion isn't based on fact, it's based on faith. Science is based on what we as humans call a fact, which is something that can be readily determinable and proven. Again, a lot of science is "implied" [e.g. 2x+2 = 6, the x would equal 4]

@ tito: i believe in god. and it's funny, because i've never claimed Allah doesn't exist because he isn't visible.

oh and i do have one question; why is it that Allah refers to the earth as a bed, and as a carpet spread out? last i checked, beds and carpets where rectangular and flat.

wait a minute... 8 plus 2 equals 6?  wtf?

Fool i know an atom (center of science) isn't visible. If you claim Allah doesn't exist because He isn't visible than what the fuck is an atom!

One thing that you people constantly over look is that Quran is all facts. Many before you and many better than you have attempted but FAILED. Disprove anything in the Quran and i will agree with your every word. What i am doing is showing that the Quran is flawless thus can't be something made by man, while science on the other hand is filled with flaws, theories and errors.

If comparing the two and stating facts is preaching under a rock i got nothing to say to you apes.
If evolution is real you fools obviously haven't evolved.

So yeah

Reads sees alto of useless shit...... No real argument being presented........ use of big words to sound intelligent and try to make up for what he lacks in knowledge on this topic...... a few names of irrelevant people mentioned..... writer doesn't understand the purpose of the Quran, not to mention anything it says..... Reader moves on.....
well first off take elite's example of the earth as Allah's bed, or whatever....that is blatant anthropomorphism, which trivializes the human perception of an all-encompassing deity. Nothing in what I wrote up there is meaningless. I can guarantee that you dismissed it because you weren't entirely sure what the relationship between anthropomorphism and allegory is. There is a clear argument being presented, and since when has Averroes been irrelevant to the Muslim faith  :saywhat: He was probably the most important thinker of the Middle Ages, which was the golden age of Islam intellectually and culturally.

But what I was getting at is that you can't worship allah in good conscience without viewing the quran as a mere allegory written by men for the intellects of men, thereby containing vast trivialization of allah. I was in no way attacking your belief in allah, since I have fluctuated in and out of belief for years now. so why would you call God Allah -- i sometimes refer to God as Dios, which is how you say it in spanish. If you don't speak arabic and aren't islamic, why would you ever refer to god as allah?

there are hundreds and thousands of different ideas about 'god', who or what it is and what it might look like or be able to do... etc. etc. etc.

I've been reading about near-death experiences recently.  Anyone have any thoughts on this?  I'm reading mixed things on whether they are helucinations or real experiences.  Some say your brain is dead and technically can't have helucinations so it's gotta be real, while others say your brain can still have enough function after death somehow.
