Title: College Soccer
Post by: Jatt on Dec 24, 2008, 07:04: AM
How is college soccer in USA? What are some tips for athletes to get recruited? What level of soccer is DIV 1?

college soccer is actually a pretty low level in my opinion. the very best teams are pretty good, but most of the teams suck. Div 1 is supposed to be the highest, but there are teams from all the divisions that are as good as any team. if you are interested in playing college in the states i recommend you try to play Div 2 or NAIA, because they have less recruitment restrictions and have more money for scholarships in some cases. the level you play at will probably be about the same no matter what division you play its just more people pay attention to D1, because it supposed to be better.  college soccer is a low level, but i guess its not that bad, because i had a friend of mine who played with me in college and later played for a few professional teams in europe who said that the average team was about the same level as 5th division in europe based on talent. the difference being that the 5th division teams were fitter and more organized mainly.

^^^ what he said. D2 is actually a much higher level these days, and i have seen the best from Nor. Cal go to DII schools and have more offers than ever. Some tips to get recruited is you have to talk to them. It is not europe, and most people do not give a shit about soccer, so its your job to ask them to come watch you play. Also, they look for athletic ability so much, so if you are fast, show that. An easy way to do that, is if your team loses the ball, run after the guy making a run at your goal and strip him (my friend did this often, and is now playin at metro state in colorado). Jump for EVERY header, and more importantly have some swagger about you. Scouts love a player with some attitude ( confidence is the key for everything), and be real loud. These things will easily land you some try outs. Guaranteed. Good luck man

ya im going to contact a lot of universities soon. my resume is that my team won USL super y league north american championship in florida. im gonna contact div 1 schools mostly. i also hired a guy who's gonna help me make a internet profile and contact coaches etc. what are the chances of going pro after university? also, my plan is to attend a good university and then go abroad (europe etc) to play pro. this way i have a back degree as well. any advice?

well to go pro in the states you almost have to play D1 eventhough there are alot of players just as good in the other divisions. for some reason the scouts just don't look at them. most players from other divisions that go pro do it overseas. the other thing that you need to do especially if you want to play overseas is to make contacts with people who know about how professional football works. for example through my experience playing NAIA college soccer which many teams have ex-pro players, i managed to meet a couple people from brasil and europe that could get me a trial for a team if i liked.  just try to gain these connections if you really want to play professionally, because they are just as important as being good. there are alot of people who manage to get on teams, because of connections and just as many who never make a team, because they don't have the connections.

When i was in high school, my councellor showed me statistics of 0.1 percent go professional from D1 and 0.01 percent of high school players go professional. Because you are contacting D 1 schools though, make sure your money is game is right, because even if they like you, scholarship money for D1 is so low, no matter how good your grades are or if your ronaldinho. I have only heard of 1 player getting a full ride to d1 and he is on the U.S. national team. My advice is while you were on off season, try and travel to europe and get some open try outs, because honestly, it is extremely extremely rare that european scouts come to watch D1 soccer in the states as it mostly laughed upon.

Also, are you a boss on your team? Because when you got college soccer, it is so different than Canadian soccer. It is so much faster, way more physical, and wayyyyy better players. I assume you play for the whitecaps? an average team in Nor.cal is about the same level as that. So train hard, and work on sticking out, because there are so many players that are amazing, but they are shadowed along with many other amazing players. 330 million (?) I believe in the U.S, as opposed to Canada's 33 million. Good luck man.

Probably playing D3 soccer next year. Adi gave me advice on getting to play in college and you really need to get out there and contact coaches and attend their camps and let them know you want to play there. D1 soccer varies, teams like Maryland, national champs, play ugly football, I would know I go to there games... But others play decent, the pace is fast and the play is physical, but it's definitely a step down from any pro level

yes my goal is to get a scholarship for a good team/university in general making sure it is the right fit for academics too. i would like to go to a big university where there are more fans etc. i just want a good experience so when i finish, i can play abroad. i have a uefa licended coach based in canada who will help me get tryouts in europe. any suggestions/advice? so its hard to get a div 1 full ride? i can play for University of british colombia or simon fraser university for a decent scholarship but i know that american soccer would be much better in general. and how many times do university teams train in a week? whats the training like? i wish they train every day of the week, so players can get a professional experience and bond together as a team in general? weight training?

full scholarship for a D1 college will be almost impossible unless you are already at a high professional level, but D2 and NAIA schools have more money and tend to have more full-ride players.  if you have someone who is advertising you to teams like you said, you should be able to get a decent, but you almost have to be god to get a full-ride D1.  most college teams train minimum of 5 days a week, and my old school used to train 7 days a week depending how pissed off our coach was at the moment. we only did weight training on our own at my school, but the coach normally gave us a sheet and expected us to record what we did.  my only recommendation is that you do not hold out for a full-ride somewhere, and take a good scholarship if it is offered.  also try to go on visits if they are possible, so you can meet some of the players and get their opinions on the coaches. this is important, because  there are many coaches that are complete assholes, and you do not want to dedicate that much time to a coach you hate.  if you can go to a big school i recommend it, because it will be boring on weekends at small schools where everyone goes home. also you have more choices academically at big schools.

I highlighted the ones that the coaches will be remotely impressed with. The rest I am telling you right now will not matter, because they are going to watch how you play, and fit with the program, not what you have done before. I was one of the worst on my team, but got an offer from a D2 university because I was creative on the attack so they thought i would fit in better than some of the other better players.

I don't think your taking the advice seriously in this topic man. Your picking out what you wanna hear, and what sounds best. Your so stuck on getting a full ride to D1 but like i said, I only seen 1 person do that, and he is probably going to be in the MLS after his freshman year at Duke. We are from America so we know what the programs are like, and everything everyone is saying is the truth. You need to be an absolute phenom for some of the goals your expecting to accomplish. D1 alone is hard to go pro from, and there is not a huge school where a lot of people go to the games. Soccer is not popular here, its seen as a pussy sport.

good luck though man, dont learn the hard way and listen to the people here. Be smart about this.

sure, but that's secondary to what tj highlighted and not something that coaches are necessarily looking for.  you need something that sets you apart from the 17+ other players on your team.

coaches are going to want to see you play.  you need video, or you need to be ready to go for a "trial."

well to be honest with you all, this kids resume would make him a sure shot for most D1 programs(most D1 programs does not include teams like north carolina, duke, wake, indiana, etc.) a full-ride is basically impossible for a D1 player unless he is already of professional level. i know one person who got a full-ride to a D1 school, and his previous team was 2nd division in brasil.  also i think the whitecaps thing will be big for him. the teams in the usa aren't that good guys. outside of maybe dallas texans and chicago magic i never really saw that many usa teams that would be that much better than the whitecaps.  my only true recommendation to this kid is not to hold out for D1 full-ride, and not to rule out D2 and naia teams. i have friends on naia teams right now that can compete with any D1 team, and these teams tend to have more money and less recruitment restrictions than NCAA teams.

They will take out your Planning 10 because that is not a recognized course in the United States and they will not weight it but rather just credit it, and overall you have a lot of B's, which is not good enough for a full ride, roughly a 3.3 is what you have, where 3.8-4.0+ usually will allow you for academic scholarships along with soccer. This alone could prevent the full ride factor (the 3.3 gpa) which is just above average, but again, not enough for money.

Now Reds4life, you mention that teams in the U.S are not that good. But I have seen these age groups play and teams in nor cal and more specifically south cal would put the whitecaps in a coma. Real So Cal, Blackpearl, FC barcelona, La Canada, NHB, FC Arsenal,LAFC are all cali teams that destroy outsiders coming in, scores of 5-0 and higher. That is just in cali alone, imagine teams in Texas, New York, Arizona, New Jersey, and Florida.

Full-ride to D1 and this point looks very slim, sorry to point that out. And especially being from Canada,  it will be even harder. Now it is not all negative. D2 is just as good if not better (because there is more money offered to players), but your young so you are really stubborn and only want to hear advice that does not conflict with your own goals. You have been offered gold in this topic man, just take it.

There are other tracks to going professional, then the all-ride to D1. The sooner you realize, the better you can continue your path. good luck young man

yeah they have agencies that make you do test after test. Fuck that, I'd rather be creative. I have some writing credentials that'll put me in good stead, and my SAT scores aren't half bad (I haven't done the real SAT yet, just from the one practice I did).

"American schools do in fact take into account Canada's different mark system and I am fairly sure they don't convert Canadian transcripts into GPA"

i would imagine they would have you convert the transcript into a gpa for practical purposes.  however, they would definitely take the appointed letter grade and would not arbitrarly convert the percentages to letter grades.  there's discrepancy b/w grading scales in the us.
Title: Re: College Soccer
Post by: ^_^ on Jan 12, 2009, 03:46: AM
why are you looking at the percentages? A's and B's differ in schools within the US. If you apply to grad school, for instance, they won't look at your percentages. They are going to look at your grade. A, B, C, D, or F.

Since you are coming from Canada, they are going to do the same thing. If you have an A, it's counted as 4. If you have a B, it's counted as 3. You're applying at an American school so they are going to convert your letter grades into an American GPA.

Again, grading scales differ in many schools within the US. It would be very time consuming to pick apart everyone's percentages.

Now i think even though the person is applying to do an MBA he's still talking about the same grades you are so i would assume its the same conversion rate.

I suppose that all my school's guidance counselors are inferior to you in their knowledge of the system. For real, people in my school have gotten into harvard, yale, and princeton with 90-92 average. I think that one who got into brown had an 89 average.

It has a lot to do with extra curriculars and leadership positions.

The latter is utter bullshit, though.

Why do I need to hear what Canadian councellors are saying if I have personal experience and have seen it show up on my transfer scripts? Unless its different in ontario, that could be possible, so i wont exclude that possibility. The TS is from B.C. though. So most likely, it will be how I mentioned

I dont think any of you have actually played college soccer or gone through the recruiting process.... Ive done it twice, played both NAIA (which is good, played against Kevin Souter, now starter for KC Wizards) and D3 (the best D3 programs eg Messiah, Trinity, Loras can beat nearly any team any division), had a couple D1 offers, but went elsewhere to pursue different directions in my studies... Also my older brother played 4 years D1

Grades: Important, but a whole lot depends on standardized tests... ACT and SAT for US, idk what it is for Canada.. the combination of high test scores with good grades is what gets you in to the school

As for recruiting, the best D1 programs do most of their recruiting off the youth national and regional teams from the ODP Programs...

After that, the majority of recruiting is done at things called "College Showcases" where teams go, play exhibition matches and college coaches sit on the sidelines and watch with notepads and rosters...    After college showcases, a fair amount of recruiting is done through their residential camps, where a bunch of college coaches are and see these players... but its a huge money thing, and these coaches make tons of money off of players paying expensive fees to go to their camps.

Sorry guys, virtually NO SCHOOL OFFERS FULL RIDES FOR SOCCER!!!!!! very rarely do you see this happen.

a fully funded NCAA program is 9.9 full ride scholarships.. that is 9.9 for a full team, most likely consisting of 27-33 players, and is split up..

well most of what you said is definitely correct. ncaa teams basically only look at odp or big name players from big club programs.  almost no D1 full-rides happen ever to americans, and only normally to top foreign players.  naia programs typically recruit through foreign recruitment programs that advertise players to different schools. these programs typically have top players, so that coaches are willing to trust them when they hear about players.  the americans are normally local, and made the team by contacting the coach and participating in a training session. there are way more full-rides offered in naia than any other division. in my conference there were teams with 14+ scholarships.  probably the only thing that i'm not sure about in your post is about the division 3 teams. not trying to be offensive, but most division 3 teams are quite poor, and mainly consist of players from local highschools. they also offer no scholarships and typically have high priced tuition which normally drives good players away. i know there are a few good programs which are basically the ones you mentioned, but i kind of doubt they could compete against most teams in any division.

JK3r your right about the no schools offer full rides, and Jatt is on his high horse thinking he is going to get one, because he has all this confidence from making the whitecaps and all these local and small tournaments he is playing in. It will be exciting to see him experience a rude awakening as soon as he plays even an average team from cali. :boxing: :boxing:

dude i appreciate you trying to help but i know what im capable of. We were better EVERY team in North America in the Super Y league. We won the finals as well. We beat Super Nova, CZ elite, tsf academy, and as of california, the finals WERE in cali.

don't worry about him kid. i really don't know what he is rambling about american teams being so much better than canadian teams. in all honesty almost all youth teams in north america are pretty crap. you probably do think you are better than you are, but thats not the biggest problem. the one thing that is a truth is that D1 full-rides are basically reserved for players who should be professional already. from what you have told me, i do believe you will probably be able to get some decent offers from all divisions. good luck with your college soccer career.

Those teams except TSF are not even ranked top 50 in the nation, and that Super Y tournament in Florida is a joke because all the good players go to academies at that time of year, and your left with second string players. congrats on beating the scraps, you guys are dominant!!! (http://www.gotsport.com/rankings/results.aspx?Level=&Gender=Boys&Age=17&Region=&State=&Search=). Better than all the teams in North America huh?   You honestly have no clue what west coast soccer is about, and reds4life... dude, shut the fuck up. Your from Nashville for fucks sake, of course your perception of North American soccer is gonna be weak. Your guys idea of soccer is who can kick the ball the highest over the bar, so you really have no room to speak my friend. But like you said, Good Luck, cause this Jatt kid is dillusional thinking he is going to get a full ride off of his "impressive" resume, which is really quite weak to be honest.  I tried to put it lightly, but obviously that does not work.

and for the record, who the fuck even plays super y anymore??   All the best are playing on state, regional or national teams, super y is for the players who could not make those teams.

tj i recommend you be the one who lays off.  i am sure that i am probably a better footballer than you, and i've played my fair share i college soccer(my team was top 20 in the nation when i was there.)  let the kid do what he likes with his chances in college soccer. he probably is a decent player, and my perception of american soccer is not just based on TN(which i admit in most cases is shit compared to the rest of usa),  but i've played against and with players from many areas.  also for fucks sake why do you have to act like my opinion on football means nothing, because i'm from nashville. you need to get a life outside of telling some kid on the internet that he has no chance of being a good footballer. something better maybe practice football yourself, and try to play at a higher level than you have.

Why would I wanna play higher? I am done playing and I am a millionaire as of 2009. I don't need to practice anything, I have my life sorted out. I was down this road, and I guarantee some petty kid from TN is not better than me when i was in my prime. Top 20 in the nation? for me, try top 8 teams. I didn't say your opinion doesn't mean anything, but you don't need to be a yesman for no reason. If you are so good, why not be realistic and let him know his actual chances? If you were playing at the level you said you were truly playing at, then you should know better than anyone his perception of being glorious in the states are highly dilluted. We need realism.

yo tj why does it seem like you're the best at everything on the internet? I'd be curious to know what school you actually went to, and how old you are.

I seem to remember on another thread that you said you were 20...that means you still should be in college  :dontknow:

you can retake it as many times as you like as of 2005 I think. But no use doing it more than 3, statistically speaking.
