it will be hard for motg now ...since redbull took over. And that will be every year...soon qualifications will start all around the world for Redbull Streetstyle 2010 in South Africa. That will be MASSIVE
-
I think that shouldn't be an obstacle, but motivation to try and make a better competition. Either way, I think the competition should be in Amsterdam like it was before.
BTW, will freestylers be able to qualify for this competition or will it be by invitations only?
-
You guys tell us??? There are soooooo many freestylers but not all are up to par. We have done invitations in the past to try and get the best, "masters" of that given moment in time. But as you know some of the top guys dont want too or cannot compete for whatever reason. Maybe they feel they stand to lose too much "if" they Lose or contract obligations. Anyway we can only respect the next man's choice. But there are still some true gladiators out there... MotG is for those gladiators, the hungry guys looking for that chance to show the world they are the best and want to earn your respect. With the current climate and all the competition on the freestyle market, things tend to get tricky and [what we HATE] political. We would love to have a competion that is open for everyone but we have limited time, limited slots and it needs to stay interesting "as an event" for the spectators. The best man will win anyway and if some new kid comes out of no where and wins then just "maybe" he DESERVES it. Take SEAN for instance, he has only been freestyling for 3 years (that is incredible)! But he won the Red Bull competition. He told me he was going to do it a year before and all i can say is SALUTE and respect! That is heart and ambition.
We have seen posts here about our competition and yes we do it every 3 years. The scene is exploding at the moment and us being the pioneers of it want to ensure that there is a certain quality and respect level. Doing a competion every year in our opinion kills the essence of the a True MotG competition. There are a lot of new freestylers with new tricks and techniques but if you look at 2003 ---to---2009 is there "really" that big of a difference in the true skill set. YES AND NO! Abudulla, Mr Woo, John F... in 2006 - these guys are all still relevant today if they "want" to be. All they have to do is update their techiniques, create a nice show, be entertaining and luck also plays a part because skills they have! So its up to you guys the next generation to step up and show that there can be a TRUE yearly competition. Mostly what is happening is everyone is remixing someone else's move anyway. The world cup and the olympics are every 4 years and that is where we want to be. Freestyle has grown enormously and hopefully one day it will be considered as an olympic sport but we are some ways away from that. MotG created a platform for freestylers/street ballers. There are so many competions and there will only be more in the future. When we started this in 2002 we told everyone this would happen and many didnt believe us but look now... The success of the Red Bull competition shows what marketing dollars and exposure can do. We love and embrace what everyone is doing. The more money RB, Nike, Puma, Adidas and any other multinational invests on street football the better! That is the commercialization of the movement, we just hope it doesnt kill it. You have to realize they see a movement. Street football can be compared to hip hop, it will live and grow based on what is created and how much money is made. Once people start making money and eating from it then it will go commercial and it will change. End of the day its fun, sport but also business and we would love for you guys to be able to live from freestyle / street football for the rest of your lives. This why we do this. But it all starts with Love and Passion for the game!
By the way we will be having our 2009 competition with an (international preround) in AMSTERDAM and the final with the last [xx] will be held in another country tba. We will announce the dates soon. Now you know.
