Premier League Clubs have today unanimously agreed to further examine a proposal that creates a new round of 10 competitive fixtures to be played across the world over one weekend in January beginning season 2010/11.
This ‘international round’ would be in addition to the traditional 38 home and away matches each of the 20 Premier League Clubs currently play.
Premier League Chief Executive, Richard Scudamore, said: “We are proud the Barclays Premier League is viewed as the strongest domestic football competition in the world by fans at home and abroad, and we are committed to maintaining this position.
“The ‘international round’ is an exciting and innovative proposal that needs careful consideration before being introduced. However, this concept recognises the truly global appeal of the Barclays Premier League whilst understanding that the traditions of the English game have always underpinned our success.
“We believe that an ‘international round’ of matches will enhance the strength of the Barclays Premier League as a competition; create extra interest in all 20 Premier League Clubs at home and abroad; and allow increased investment in talent development and acquisition, facilities as well as our football development and community programmes.
“The globalisation of sport is both an opportunity and a challenge; one that needs addressing in a responsible way. We are a better competition for being a cosmopolitan league and have benefited from our increased international reach. Nonetheless, it is critical we retain our English character by improving our efforts to produce home grown talent, deepening our commitment to community engagement and continuing our investment in the grass roots.”

Very cool! Sounds like what the NFL is doing over in England.
I would love to see some teams come to the US and play. It's a great idea considering everyone watches football across the world. That's not the case with the NFL, so I think the Premiership will have more success than the NFL with this.

The NHL also does this, .. they already had games in Europe at the beginning of this season and they are having 2 games again next season in Sweden and Russia.
This is great for the Premier League though, they'll get even bigger, would be amazing if Man Utd came to Toronto!

It's nice when sports switch things up a bit.
I remember when the NHL picked a game to be played outdoors. It got a huge TV audience for the game.

The Winter Classic, I think they do it every so often, so it doesn't lose it's touch. It was played in the Buffalo Bills stadium, which was pretty cool. The Bills are going to make a lot of money though when they have a few games up here in Canada. ;)
But this should easily promote the Premier League cause everyone speaks it's language so it's easier to pay attention to, and the Premier League gets enough promotion as it is.

i don't like this at all its just all about making more and more money for all these new chairmans coming in. it would ruin the history and tradition of the english league :bang:
-
a lot of people don't like it, but tbh i don't really mind it as long as we get Derby 3 times a season
-
There are fake fans like me all around the world that would like to watch a live game. That's why it is happening
-
It's great for us, but not for the people who live in England. I'm sorry, but I definetely want this to happen.

"Soon you will have in England no English presidents, you already have no English coach, you have no English players and maybe now you will have no clubs playing in England. It's a joke."
- Platini
And to be fair, he's right.
-
Too true, it's all foreign. But to be honest, that's what makes the Premier League so good. A fair share of players from each country brings a mixture to the game.

Platini can fuck off. He has no business brain. He needs a wake-up call because the game nowadays is a big business. What's wrong with giving something back to those fans that are supporting the team overseas? I know plenty of people that are bigger fans over here in the States than some of those fans in England. People pay a good dollar to follow their team here, so give them something back... filthy French cunt.

i dont see this happening there are too many people against this idea. most importantly FIFA. other associations are reluctant to go against the world governing body. many FA's hav already ruled themselves out

looks like its all over

Fuck that. :cursing:

They are money hungry they already make enough money as it is. I'm not liking the commercializations of the game. Well done FIFA.

If you look at it from a money perspective only, then you have a point, but what about looking at it from the fans perspective. If they were to do this, they would be satisfying 90% of its leagues fans. That's the percentage of fans of the Premiership from outside England. How about doing something for us?

It's enough we have to pay $15 a month for damn Setanta Sports just to get a decent amount of games to watch, and to top it all off, sometimes your own team is not even being shown! Sportsnet used to show 3 games a day all after eachother and it was part of the Cable lineup, you didn't need to get satellite and anything extra, and now, they are limited to show only 1 game, and Setanta has full rights of every game, Sportsnet gets the leftovers. Also, I haven't even seen one United game this year on TV simply because of Setanta taking all the rights. To be honest, the Premier League should have never sold rights to them, because it sucks for people who don't have satellite, because you need to get satellite just to buy Setanta.

I think all this would do is cause an amount of unnessecary flying and traveling for the players. Just another thing a player and coach would have to put on thier already long and complicated list of things to do. There is already international duty, league duty, various cup competitions, and the Champions league. It would be a nice gesture, but it is just too much. Premiership players get maybe a month, if that, of "summer" or break, and this would then be cut short a week.
