Title: The Official Rock Thread
Post by: TheGodEmperor on Sep 20, 2008, 09:34: AM
if jip hop and rap gets one, then rock should too.

Anyhow, I've been listening to Jethro Tull, 13th Floor Elevators, Spock's Beard, Dropkick Murphys, Gentle Giant, Flogging Molly, Runrig, and a bit of Echolyn lately.

How 'bout everyone else who listen to rock?

you chunk I like your taste. I've been listening to tons of prog rock recently...

check out alphataurus, spock's beard, camel, and other random italian prog rock bands...

Their sound is so crazy
Title: Re: The Official Rock Thread
Post by: Chunkchenko on Sep 21, 2008, 10:35: AM
Speaking of Drop Kick murphys i learnt some of "Johnny i hardly knew ya" on my bass.

Ill check out those bands now. I never really hear rock songs on the radio when i go to italy.

Heres an amazing cover of probably my favourite Human Abstract song.
Polaris

Too bad their new album "Midheaven" is pretty poor.

Also do you like Bullet for my valentine, Killswitch engage and Papa roach?
Title: Re: The Official Rock Thread
Post by: TheGodEmperor on Sep 21, 2008, 01:10: PM
the only band I listed there thats Italian was Alphataurus. Check out Gentle Giant and Spock's Beard, though

that song that you posted wasn't bad, although I can't stand metal/post hardcore style vocals. I figured out how to play 'Shipping Off to Boston' by the Dropkick Murphys on guitar...it was surprisingly easy.

And no I dont like the 3 bands you listed either...

do you guys in Britain know Alexis On Fire? They're pretty sick

About Mudvayne - I like both of em... There was a time where I loved Happy to the EXTREME! For like 4 months or so. I was like this song can never get boring. it's just perfect. But now... pfff... it's ok. I'm getting into the older mudvayne shizzle now. But Happy etc... still awesome.  :rockit:
You've got quite good taste too

Yey a rock topic, nice :D

I love Swedish melodic metal such as In Flames, Soilwork, Sonic Syndicate. Some other favorite bands are Millencolin, Lost Prophets, Bullet for my Valentine, Silverstein, Paramore.

Sonic Syndicate - Jack of Diamonds, one of the best song this year for me.
Paramore - Misery Business, and this one too

A nice song from Staind - Believe

Also Metallicas video for their new song "The day that never comes" i dont really get it. Funny hearing this and Slipknots "Psychosocial" on Radio 1.

I can play strings, but my chord/powerchord skills are shit....so put me in for string melody and shit I guess

Sander, I've seen the Foo Fighters in concert with Bob Dylan, they were pretty decent, some good songs.

@chunk: true -- and there are soooo many. Dream Theatre beginnings are good, but then the rest of the song always sucks. Thats why prog rock >>>>>>>prog metal.

Heres a pretty easy song.

Deep Purple - Smoke on the water.
feature=related

Heres a Bass tab for the intro but should sound the same using the top string on your guitar.
http://www.bassmasta.net/d/deep_purple/135840.html

The numbers mean which fret you hold while strumming and the 0 means you dont hold any of the frets and just strum the string by itself.

ah so you're a shred enthusiast andres.

I like some Malmsteen, Vai, and Buckethead, but often the skill is incredible but it's sometimes just not good music. It's like someone saying 'look at me I'm good at guitar' but not making such good art. All of them have some good songs, though.

they're clasically trained and feel the need to throw it around all over the fucking place

I like the classical part, but then they fuse it with the metal power chord progression and it sounds retarded...if you wanna go progressive, you've got to still make music that can be listened to

"feel the need to throw it around all over the fucking place"

but hey, they found a niche and made a shit load of money.  whatever works for them i guess...

yea a;sdlfkjas;df is right, also the fact that they change constantly on scales so its weird sometimes  not like in rock were they stay only in one scale usually penatonics scales , but in their recent albums they change their style of playing :( to more metal becouse thats wat ppl like this days

'rime of the ancient mariner' is a poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge...any connections maybe?

Haha I guess so - hadn't the slightest clue what song it was but it was SUPER long.... I managed to fit in a nap, snack, and some FS time before the song was done haha.

This singer just recently joined the band, so it doesn't sound all that good.

Anyway, I'll keep you updated.

they suck live and trust me, there are way better powermetal bands. just look for powermetal on youtube and watch some compilations. in the discription it often says: not dragonforce, they suck or something like that  and to be honest i find them quite good but they're overrated in the 'powermetalworld'

is amy even in this genre? I think she's alternative metal but I dunno  :dontknow:
lacey's vocals are f***ing amazing. my friends aren't into this genre or music with women as lead vocalists (not that they're against women but they love shit like buckethead, 3 days grace, breaking benjamin, seether, Mudvayne, Metallica and shit.... I love em too  :pimp:), but they ALL said she's got great vocals, and that she REALLY knows how to control her voice.
oh yeah, IMO, I don't like the acoustic version much, the original = waaaaay better  :)

As I told you before, lots of those artists have graduated from music schools, unlike the rappers but let's not go offtopic.

mikael, no one's ever going to accept this stuff as music eventhough the musicianship by the majority of these bands are better than anything they listen too. we're never going to go to the normal bland rock thread, there needs to be a thread with some more edge to it anyway.

metal from the land of samba, SEPULTURA :rockit:

when did I ever say they aren't good musicians...read my post more carefully...

and I don't like rap, I like classic rock and prog rock. Prog rock has the most instrumental sophistication of any genre. Bands like Gentle Giant have done instrumentals using more than 40 different instruments

mikael we were discussing rock a while back...you don't remember

thankfully, rock is a very broad genre

nothing personal, it's a numbers thing.  traffic on freestyle board > general chat

that's not an awful idea, but it would take too much away from the general chat section
Title: Re: The Official Rock Thread

yeah metal and all of its sub-genres, hardcore, posthardcore, etc, all fall under that category of rock
Title: Re: The Official Rock Thread
Post by: redsforlife on Oct 29, 2008, 01:18: PM
i agree with 4e. we desperately need a music section. rock is too broad of a genre to have just one thread. most of us look at the rock section looking for completely different styles of rock. we need at least something to separate classic rock, modern rock, alt rock, and hardcore/metal.  if it wasn't for 4e's thread i would have never looked at the rock section, because the majority of the stuff i would never care for. please consider it. we need this.

again, i just don't think that there's enough traffic to go around.  i think that there would be too much similar conversation spread too thin

however, i'm not the only member of the forum.  post your request in the forum suggestion thread pinned in the general chat section

true
it are all different genres. one might listen to mikael/emo's stuff but hate normal rock and  the other way around. with rapthread it's all the same. it's like putting all genres that have a piano together. so you get classic music and also powermetal in one thread. that's the same story
