Hello BF-Forum members,
well I decided to open this new thread which is all about mysteries, riddles, puzzles, brainteasers or however you want to call them.
In this thread I will give you a puzzle which one of you has to solve, by doing this, he will get offered a +karma from me, (if this is allowed by the mods and admins;) ) and I will set up a new one. So if you get bored or don’t know what to do, or if you just liked riddles, try solving them!
So there also must be some kind of rules, so it makes more fun for everyone:
-If you know the answer of a puzzle, write your answer with the exact explanation why it is how you pretend it is. So everyone
else can understand your solution
-You are not allowed to give more than one answer on one quiz
-By solving a quiz, you will get a karma from me
-If you know one puzzle already from anywhere else (and you know already the solution), don’t be egoistic and let the chance to
the others to find the solution by themselves!
I think this is it, and I hope you have fun solving them!
Edit: I forgot to say that if someone already solve a riddle, don't hesitate solving it for yourself too! This should mostly be about
fun solving them! So don't ruin it yourself checking the other's answers. ;)
Notice: You can set up your own quiz as well! Just wait until the current one is solved, if nobody does a new one, you can
go ahead.

Ok let's start with the first one, a really easy one which should be solvable by nearly everyone:)
I'm going to do a picture to make it easier to understand.
The Farmer
Alright, there is a farmer who is living on one side of a river. He possesses some salads, a sheep, an there is a wolf who is living
around the farm. The farmer also got a boat, and so he decided to pass the river, and he wants to take the salads, the sheep an
the wolf on the other side of the river. However, the boat allows him only to take one thing on the boat. Furthermore, the farmer
should pay attention, because he cant let the sheep alone with the salads on one side, because otherwise the sheep eats it
(this counts for both sides). Also, the wolf cant be let alone with the sheep, he is going to eat it. Now the question:
How can the farmer bring all things to the other side of the river, considering all the rules listed above?

The farmer would first take the sheep over to the other side, come back for the salad than take the salad with him to the other side, drop it off and bring back the sheep with him to the original side and drop off the sheep. Now he takes the wolf with him to the other side (leaving the wolf and salads alone together since the wolf wont eat the salads) now he comes back and takes the sheep to the other side.

Then he take ta sallad with him to the other side, and on the way he take back the sheep and drive back again
Now, he leave the sheep on the farm, and put the wolf on the boat, drive over to the other side and pull of the wolf there with the sallad, and the farmer is now driving back to the farm.
Now he take the sheep with him to the other side, and everyone is on the right side of the lake and everyone is happy :pimp:

Your an inmate in a prison your planing an escape, there is only one entrance and one exit and its the bridge that takes you to the mainland (Freedom), it takes 45 minutes to cross the bridge. You are only allowed to exit or enter the prison through this bridge if you have a special pass. There is a guards room located exactly in the middle of the bridge. The guards will send back to where you came from if they catch you trying to cross without a special pass. Fortunately they are playing a game of Chess and will only look up to see if any one is crossing the bridge every 22 minutes, they look at the whole bridge and then they go back to the game. You do not have a pass, how do you make it off the prison.

Remember even if you run your fastest you can't make it in under 45 minutes and there is no where to hide on the bridge.
Also no hanging off the bridge, no jumping off and swimming to safety, no killing or bribing the guards if they discover you and all other types of shenanigans.
Hope you understand I tried to make it as understandable as possible.

Hide under the window where the guards look from every 22 minutes. which is past the 22 minutes marker then after there finished looking continue?
thats the only way i can think of how its possible atm.

I go to the guards house and scream FUCK U ALL 2PAC IS ALIVE, I get sent back by the guards. Then I run back, and im faster than them so I win the race. I hope they dont shoot me.

you walk towarts the guards house. after 21 minutes or a bit less, you turn around and walk back to the prison. one minute later the guards will spot you, but because they think you are going to the prison they'll send you to the mainland (freedom)

could have worked but inmates got inmates clothes and i think guards would have known the dress code in prisson, and if you run naked i think that would be more odd. Maybe you do like he said withouth clothes and they would send you to a mental institution where there are not heavy guarded and you can run from there.

heh, maybe go toward freedom for 21 minutes, then turn around and walk back until, 1 minute later, go again toward frredom, then, after 21 minutes, go around again and go to prison, minute later got to freedom...

I think i got the answer, considering I did not set it up, I can answer it too :)
Well, you call another person to come and cross the bridge. As it is impossible to enter it without a pass, this person has got a pass.
You meet each other before the guards come out and check the bridge. This person gives you the pass, and you can go off the bridge
to freedome since you got the pass to leave it. Considering the fact that everyone who gets caught without a pass, will get set back to where
he comes from, the person who gave you the pass gets to freedom as well since he comes from there.
Thats my theory, but I dont know if it is allowed to call another person to enter the bridge. If not, you could ask a random visitor, or steal it
from them..? I hope its right, if not, just let us know melbourne ;)

The Four Freestylers
Once more I will do a picture to make it more understandable.
Four freestylers got captured by professionnal footballers who don't like freestyle. They say "you can't use this in a real football match", so
they decided to dig the freestylers in the ground exept for their heads. The fsers can absolutely not move, also they can't move or turn their
heads. Between freestyler A and freestyler B is a massive wall, so they can't see each other. Besides, all the freestylers know that each one
of them wears a hat. Two hats are white, two are black (they know this.) However, they do not know which freestyler wears which color.
To avoid that they will get killed by the pro footballers, one freestyler has to guess his own hat color. When he gets wrong, all the fsers will
get killed, so there is no second chance: he must be absolutely right. The four freestylers are not allowed to speak with each other, and they
get 10 minutes times to think it over. After a few minutes, one freestyler guesses the correct color of his hat, and all get free. Now the question:
Which freestyler knew the correct answer, and why was he absolutely right that it was correct?

Ok, lets give it a go for the next one. This one is a little more difficult.

Well, I guess theists believe nothing is major than God, and nothing is more vicious than the devil. The poor has nothing. Happy people need nothing. And when you eat nothing, you'll die.
Even though you can be poor and have more than nothing, be happy but still need stuff etc., I say the answer is "nothing".

Imagine three boxes of fruit. The first box is marked apples, the second is marked pears, and the third box is marked apples and pears. All the boxes are marked with the wrong label. How can you label each box correct if you could only pick one fruit from one of the boxes?

i think you should take a fruit from the mixed box. since all labels are false you know what should be in the box that says mixed (which is false). so if you pick an apple, that box is filled with apples. and because all of them must be false, the box where you took the label from that sais apples is not apples and also not the mix one(because then you can't swap pear anymore).
to make it short: you take from mix, if it's apple, the one that sais mix is apple, the one that sais apple is pear and the one that sais pear is mixed ;)
finally i can post a riddle myself
i'll do a freestyleversion of one i know
mr woo, skora, JF and TF walk in the middle of the night. it's completely dark and they have one flashlight. then they see a bridge which leads to freestyle-paradise whatever. a sign sais the bridge has holes, so you need to have the flashlight with you if you walk on it. also it sais that only 2 persons can walk on the bridge at the same time and somehow they know that it takes 12 minutes before the bridges collapses.
mr woo is old and for him it takes 5 min to cross the bridge
skora can only walk while doing htw, so it takes him 4 min to cross
JF is a normal healthy guy so it takes 2 minutes for him
TF is young and energetic so he can do it in only 1 minute.
off course you understand people have to come back to return the flashlight. how do the 4 get to the other side? ;)

next to the road is a house. two guys live in there. they are not gay, they are twins and nobody in the world can say who is who. only one problem: one of them always lies and the other one always tells the truth. you can ask one question to both guys, but it must be the same one.
what question should you ask to know which way to go(off course the twins know the good one)

Hmm, let's say you ask one of them which way the other one would say, and the guy you ask is the liar. He knows the other guy is honest (I guess) and would say the correct way, but since the guy you asked is a liar, he'll say the opposite way to you. Therefore you gotta choose the opposite of what he says to go the correct way. And in my logical sence it'll be the same if you ask the honest guy; no matter who you ask, you would have to choose the opposite way of what they're saying.
So yeah, ask one of them which way the other one would say, and choose the opposite.

Put them in pairs of three. Name the first pair X, second Y and the last Z
Put X and Y on a balancer

A table ping pong ball fell into a tight deep pipe (amendment: eg. 30 cm long, buried in concrete pavement - having firm metal bottom, only 1 cm of the pipe is above the ground - so it can not be moved). The pipe was only a bit wider than the ball, so you can not use your hand. But you have a fork, wrench/spanner and a long thin plastic wire.
How would you take it out, with no damage?

It's the middeladges. A thief wants to get into a castle but sees a guard in front of the door. In his back he sees a priest coming. He hides in the bushes near the road and listenes to the conversation between the priest and the guard.
Priest: can i go in?
Guard: You need to know the password: six
Priest: three
Then the guard let's the priest in. 'Interesting' thinks the thief. Then he sees a merchant coming.
Guard: Goodday, you know the password? eightteen
Merchant: nine
Guard: Correct, you may enter.
'Even more interesting' thinks the thief. 'I should say half the number the guard sais. I'll wait for one more to be sure.' Then another merchant arrives.
Guard: Hello, can you tell me the password? Twelve
Merchant: Six
Guard: Okay, you may enter the castle.
Now the thief is sure. He goes to the entrance of the castle and the guard holds him.
Guard: You know the password? Four
Thief: Two
Guard: You are wrong. Guards take this man and bring him to prison.
What did the thief do wrong?

there are 1000 gnomes and a giant. the giant has locked up the gnomes in a cave. he said: i'll let you go one by one in another room. you may not talk and you have to stand in line. you will all get either a red hat or a white hat. when you're in line, i want all red hatwearing gnomes next to eachother and all white heatwearing gnomes next to eachother. so a 1000 gnome long line of first all red hats and then all white, or de other way around. when you enter the room, you have to pick a place in the line and may not change again.
then the giant ties the arms of all gnomes so they can't point where to stand. (these nots can only be untied by the giant)
as already mentioned the gnomes may not talk and have to stand still after they have chosen a spot. how do they solve this problem to get their freedom?

it does not matter if gnomes are able to count or not. i think lionelmessi has the wrong answer, at least not what i'm looking for. because it's random so it could be that 400 have red hat and 600 white or 1 has a red hat and 999 white. it's just random (but there are enough of both, so not only red hats or something)

Ok,I think i got it.Lets say that the giant:-
CASES:-
1. picks up a white gnome,and then a red one-the red one(who dosnt know that he is red)assumes his hat can be of any color and goes behind the white gnome.
Now,lets say a 3rd gnome is picked-
-he wouldnt know the color of his hat-so he decides to be on the safer side and get right into the middle of those two gnomes,which have 1 red and other white.In this way-the 4th gnome will get in between the gnomes where he sees that the colors of the hats are changing and so will the other incoming gnomes.
2.Picks up 2 gnomes such that they are of the same colour-then the 3rd gnome sees that the 2 are of the same colour and gets behind both of them,then the 4th one sees either-
-3 white(or 3red) gnomes-then the 4th gnome will occupy the place behind them
OR
-2 white(or red) and another red(or white) gnome-and so gets into the place,where there is a difference in color between 2 gnomes and so on and so forth...
Moral of story-get right in between 2 gnomes having different colored hats and if they all have same color,then go stand last,lol

By getting rid of 19 cows, they would have to split as follow.

Haha nice creativity Yoacim, but this isn't it ;) I just took a freestyler because this is a freestyle forum. Besides, your theory doesn't explain why he gets to his floor immediately when someone else is in the elevator.

The most logical reason why he does that, as I can see, must be because he's short so he can't reach the 11th floor button (which usually is a little higher up than 7) on his own ... Makes sense to me :dontknow:
When sander wanted to name a freestyler it could be, I thought it had to be something physically about the person that made him do that, so I thought of shortness and came up with this answer. ^_^

Your an inmate in a prison your planing an escape, there is only one entrance and one exit and its the bridge that takes you to the mainland (Freedom), it takes 45 minutes to cross the bridge. You are only allowed to exit or enter the prison through this bridge if you have a special pass. There is a guards room located exactly in the middle of the bridge. The guards will send back to where you came from if they catch you trying to cross without a special pass. Fortunately they are playing a game of Chess and will only look up to see if any one is crossing the bridge every 22 minutes, they look at the whole bridge and then they go back to the game. You do not have a pass, how do you make it off the prison.

Remember even if you run your fastest you can't make it in under 45 minutes and there is no where to hide on the bridge.
Also no hanging off the bridge, no jumping off and swimming to safety, no killing or bribing the guards if they discover you and all other types of shenanigans.

you can't do it by yourself because can only carry food for four days and the journey takes six days. just explain for each day how it works (carriers don't necessary have to go all the way with you, they may return, but off course the way back also costs food)

Then obv. it's a four day trip with 4 f&d.

okay the answer, i do not think this was the hardest so far, but i'll give you the answer
you give every wood-cutter a number from 1 to 10. then you take from nr 1, 1 piece of wood, from nr 2 you take 2 pieces etc. until you take 10 from nr 10. at the end you should get 1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9+10=55 kg of wood. but the scale will say you miss some gram(s) so if it sais 54,994 kg. then you miss 6 grams, so that will be nr 6, because he gave 6 pieces that way 1 gram too less. and if the scale sais 54,990 kg, you miss 10 grams so it's nr 10 because he gave 10 pieces that way 1 gram too less

Yes it's better to change. I'm going to call G1 the first goat, G2 the second, and P stands for prize, or whatever is in the last one, which you want to get. Basically, it's like this:
You don't change:
1) You chose G1 and lose.
2) You chose G2 and lose.
3) You chose P and get the prize.
So your chance is 1/3 if you don't change after one door has been opened.
You change:
1) You chose G1 and change. You win.
2) You chose G2 and change. You win.
3) You chose the car and change, you lose.
So your chance is 2/3 if you change after one door has been opened.
In conclusion the chance to win the prize increases by changing.

Eventhough it's a small change, you do raise the height of the water level compared to not being there, and thus you also raise the pressure on the bottom and the water will therefore pour out some faster. The pressure that the water pulls of does only depend of the height. James was on to it.
When we're still figuring water out, here's another one for you to find out.

There is a castle surrounded by water/a river which is 10 meters large. One day the castle was attacked by some evil vikings who decided to take it over. However, they were only in possession of wood which is 9.5 meters long.

the prisoner can visit (that's misleading. he doesn't have a choice, but after he is counted, it doesn't make sense for him to do anything in the room; so, he will visit and touch nothing) until the "counter" counts them. how would the counter "count" them?

you can't have an even number of pies. e.g. 12. 12/2=6-.5=it will always be x(where x is an odd integer)/2 after the first uyer. which when divided by 2 again will give you the (same x)/4 - (2/4). so, there will still be an odd integer in the numerator/4. that would mean that the baker would have to cut the pie into two halves (1/4s). then, if my answer is correct, i just did a simple process of elimination.

(Could be wrong, but) I think the bit 'bout the earth is irrelevant, like just to use as an example, like sanders and the freestylers, it wasn't really important about them you know. The main bit is how high can you lift it, I think it could be around anything e.g. a circle

Your thinking is almost right. You forget that x= radius new- radius old= (diameter new- diameter old)/2 (because x is on both sides of the earth. so the solution is 0.318/2 =0.159m= 15,9cm
You can try this with a table tennis ball, a football etc. The distance x always stays the same, as you said sputnik it works for any number you input as z. We learned this at school and I thought at the beginning that x would be like some millimeters because the earth is so huge:)

the hundreds must add to around 1500 (you're looking for small numbers), and the ones should add to something 4
1,2,3 will only give you 1200. plus a generous avg of 30 per combination. 6*30=180=1380.
1,2,4 will give you 1400. generous 30*6=180=1400+180=1580. adding those combinations up = 1554

Two bikers are facing eachother with a distance of 40 km. They start biking towards eachother in a speed of 20 km/h. A flie starts flying from one of the bikers with a speed of 40km/h. When he meets the second biker, he turns direction and flies towards the first biker and does the same when meeting the first biker and repeats that until he dies getting squeezed when the bikers finally meet eachother.
how long did the flie fly?

You take away two pieces from the chess board, one from the left top most corner and one from the right bottom corner (two opposit corner pieces, that is). Leaving you with only 62 bars left.
After som hesitation you decide to fill the chess board up with domino pieces. One domino piece covers up two bars.

You are trying to find certain combinations which are not possible. What you do need is a proof for which none combination works. There is one, and it's quite simple.
Think of it as there are millions of possible ways to try this one. Why are all those million ways impossible to complete?

Strange, I thought I did. Well, here is goes.
What you achieve by taking the two bricks off is that you take away to bricks with the same color. Then you have 30 bricks of one color, and 32 of the other.
And as stated, two pieces with the same color is never next to eachother and one domino brick covers up exactly two pieces, one of each color. So to cover the board, you'll somehow be forced to cover two pieces of one color, without covering the other one, and therefore it's impossible.

This one's pretty good, though it's hard.
A terrorist plans to highjack an aeroplane. The plane has 100 seats and after he buys his ticket it's all booked up. The highjacker is the first man to enter the plane, but he's so nervous that he forgot which seat he took so he takes on a random seat. The next person who enters the plane goes to his seat, but if the highjacker sits there, the person chooses another seat randomized. The next person tries to find his seat but if there's someone sitting there, he takes a random.
The procedure continues untill the last person gets aboard. Funnily enough, this person's a CIA-agent, and if someone's sitting on his seat, he'll get suspicious and will therefore cancel the flight.
What's the propability of the flight getting cancelled?

What you're calculating is that if you let 99 people choose a random spot in a plane with 100 seats, what's the propability that the last person gets the seat he booked.
What if the highjacker takes a random seat which is not the seat of the person number 2, so that number 2 just can get seated on his own seat?
The second person does only choose a random seat, if the highjacker stole his seat, which is a 1/100 chance.
Besides, you calculated what the propability of the flight not getting cancelled is, (if everyone were to choose at random), the propability of it getting cancelled would then be 99%, but that's not the correct answer, since they do not choose their seats at random unless their seat is taken.

well i've had a discussion with him about something similar. pick a random number between 0 and 1. (0,5 0,34829 whatever) then take the squareroot of it. then take the squareroot of that answer over and over again. you'll get numbers that get higher and higher and will get 0,999999999 eventually. then if you do that on your calculator it will say 0,999999 for a couple of times but eventually it says 1. i asked my teacher why because i was (and still ;)) convinced that 0,999999 is not 1. he said that the calculator needed to round it off after a while because there are too many digits

Nope, I said that something's that infinitely close to something else, is right on it. If you take to pieces of rocks and say "they are right on eachother", it's just as correct to say "they are infinitely close to eachother". So it's exactly it.
And x^(1/n) where n->infinity and 0<x<1 is also equivalent 1, since it's infinitely close, or oh wait, right on it.

If you add the decimal 0 after there must be more, beacuse it's not an exact number.

If your method is correct, then numbers are devisable with 0.0, since it's a bit higher than 0 (numbers arn't devisable by 0, though by >0 and <0.). Try devide 1 with 0.0.

I have written down three 3-figure numbers which, overall, use no digit more than once. One of the numbers is a perfect square and the two other numbers are primes. Their total is 2009
With a little logic it is possible to calculate the three numbers very quickly, What are they?

Besmira knew that matte wouldn't know the numbers. So if she had been told the sum 10 (6+4), then she wouldn't be sure that matte didn't know the numbers. Why?
10=9+1=8+2=7+3=6+4=5+5
The products 21 and 25 are numbers you can only achieve in one way. So if besmira had been told the sum 10, then matte could have been told either one of 9*1, 8*2, 7*3, 6*4, 5*5, making Besmira unable to know if Matte has no clue of the numbers or not.

I think I solved it, but my way is far from quick or easy.
for the uncool solution:
Let p1 and p2 be the two primes and s be the perfect square.
p1 + p2 + s = 2009.
since both p1 and p2 are odd, s must be odd aswell.
so s has a range from 10^2<s<32^2 (cannot be higher than 1000)
or to be more precise: s = 11^2 (121), 13^2(169), 15^2(225), 17^2(289), 19^2(361), 21^2(441), 23^2(529), 25^2(625), 27^2(729), 29^2(841) or 31^2(961)
but since the digits cannot be the same:
s = 13^2(169), 17^2(289), 19^2(361), 23^2(529), 25^2(625), 27^2(729), 29^2(841) or 31^2(961)
The only way I can see how to find the numbers with a bit of ease, is to set s really low and then force the primes to be high and therefore I don't have to search through many primes, seeing as there are less primes the higher you get.
the lowest perfect square with the conditions is 169, so set s = 169 and put it in the equation
p1 + p2 + 169 = 2009
p1 + p2 = 1840
let p1>p2
then p1>1840/2(920)
The closest prime to 920 with the conditions is 937, but if p1=937 then p2 is no prime.
we can see
920<p1<1000
and then:
800<p2<900
so substitute p1 = q1 + 900 and p2 = q2 + 800
then
q1 + 900 + q2 + 800 = 1840
q1+q2 = 140
try for q1>q2
then q1 > 140/2(=70)
and the only two primes with a q1 being more than 70 is 971 and 983.
Luckily, 1980 - 983 = 857, which also is a prime.
the primes are: 857, 983
the perfect square is: 169
But I think I know another way. I'ma see if it's easier and then post it later.

Unfortunatley that isn't the right answer, and you have done it the hard way don't forget there are no repeated numbers in any of the 3 figure numbers, this means yours is wrong mike cos in 857,983 and 169 the 9 and the 8 are repeated in 2 numbers :thumbsup:. Sputnik your on the right lines with the perfect square don't give up
Just a small addition unique numbers means numbers 0-9 including 0 :)

yes it will in minutes i get it to around 22 minutes if you want my more exact answer of seconds i got around 1315 seconds. Will post working later as i have to run to get to my hockey match.
Easy way to see that the bath does fill take the % of the bath filled per second for both taps is 0.486% and % of bath drain per second by sewer which is 0.41% therfore always 0.076% of the water left i think per second do 100/0.076 and you get 1315 seconds

So if the bathtub is filled with both cold water and warm water it takes longer time than with only cold water? The cold water pipe and the warm water pipe don't share a pipe, they are two separate.
VG; 22 minutes is incorrect, but it's really close. Maybe you've done some wrong in you calculus, but I can't point it out as I'm not 100% sure of what you've done.

Ok so what i've done is first converted it all into seconds so you have 8*60 and 6*60 so this gives you 480 and 360 this is the time for the bath to become 100% full for either tap on its own so calculate the % the bath fills up for 1 second for both tap and you get 0.2083% and 0.2777% respectively if you add these 2 figures together you get 0.486% of the bath fills up per second.
The plug takes away all the bathwater in 4 minutes seconds and we can say that so if we convert that into seconds we have 240, now we work out how much water is drained per second in % and we get 0.4166.
If we then do 0.486 - 0.4166 we get 0.0694. This is the % that the bath is filling up every seond so to find out how long it takes we do 100/0.0694 and we get 1440.922 seconds divide this by 60 and we have 24.01 minutes so i think my calculating was off first time.

This only proves 0.999...=1 :banana:
Eventhough you calculated it, I'm going to show you guys how I did.
V = volume, t = time
t(V/8+V/6-V/4)=V
where V/8, V/6 and V/4 just calculates how much volume/minute the different pipes can pour/drain.
Doing the equation should give you t = 24.
If someone has a brainteaser, post it. If not, I can post another one.
VG; You'd also get 24 minutes exact if you hadn't rounded off too early.

Your an inmate in a prison your planing an escape, there is only one entrance and one exit and its the bridge that takes you to the mainland (Freedom), it takes 45 minutes to cross the bridge. You are only allowed to exit or enter the prison through this bridge if you have a special pass. There is a guards room located exactly in the middle of the bridge. The guards will send back to where you came from if they catch you trying to cross without a special pass. Fortunately they are playing a game of Chess and will only look up to see if any one is crossing the bridge every 22 minutes, they look at the whole bridge and then they go back to the game. You do not have a pass, how do you make it off the prison.

Define "something that can catch him". I'm guessing a balcony is a catcher and thus not the answer to this question. The ground could be a catcher as well, you know. By catcher you mean there is nothing that he hits before he hits the ground?
