Title: Freestyle in the Olympics?
Post by: BigMac on Aug 18, 2008, 12:08: AM
Sounds crazy but give me your thoughts on this.

I reckon it could happen some day, and i hope it will. There is alot of sports in the Olympics, like shooting, walking and bmx. Random sports but they are in the olympics.

If it was in the olympics i reckon it would be like gymnastics in the sense that the judges would give you an overall score combined on hard tricks, style, variety, technique etc. What do you guys think?

Right now the sport is too young. Too actually make the competition have quality the judges would need to be known and experienced in it so before this is possible we'd need to wait atleast 10 years. But even in 10 years I dont see freestyle being in the Olympics. Later on I do. Freestyle is growing all the time with more and more competitions which shows freestyle in the Olympics is possible. Every sport has once been small and every sport needs to start of from scratch with only a few people doing the sport.
Time will tell.

The next summer games is in London no? That would be a perfect place to start it, seeing as there are many freestylers from there.

yeah london is a great place to start it, and i am willing to look into it and try and make it happen. But if i should just sit and wait then i will. Nothing will happen if you just wait.

ok but how would we play it on olympics, there are different systems that can be made...

what do you mean?
Title: Re: Freestyle in the Olympics?
Post by: nedved on Aug 18, 2008, 12:50: AM
maybe, but u would have to introduce all the other "extreme" sports too, which idont think they will do. they like the professionalism sports.
and there wud be no point having it cos we all know john farnworth would win :D

but on a gymnastics note, get rid of fckin womens gymnastics! all that poxy, pansy, hand shit they do really pisses me off, its so gay.
just do it likethe men and get on with it, instead of raising ur hands and bending ur wrists every 3 seconds!
Title: Re: Freestyle in the Olympics?
Post by: M4R10 on Aug 18, 2008, 01:03: AM
what do you mean?

the system of freestyle competition could be different: like you have to win in few things to be winner...for example 5 disciplines: 1. longest cobmo 2. best upper ...... who got 3 points win, or it should be this system we have now, lp freestyle with some unknow judges
Title: Re: Freestyle in the Olympics?
Post by: BigMac on Aug 18, 2008, 01:11: AM
yeah they would have to be a proper judging system, and pete i have no idea what other sports have to do with freestyling.

good idea i would like to see this happen,im all in for it 2
Title: Re: Freestyle in the Olympics?
Post by: Sander on Aug 18, 2008, 02:50: AM
like others said: it should be done like other 'trick' sports such as gymnastics, figure skating and bmx. the jugdes must be people that know more about freestyle than the judges nowadays. for example people that quit freestyle because of injuries or something. freestylers can get points for style, hard tricks and orginality. or maybe there can be certain disciplines so there are competitions of only sits, uppers or lowers. but the sport is indeed too small now, but at least it's growing because more and more people are starting freestyle. so maybe in the future, but london is too early
Title: Re: Freestyle in the Olympics?
Post by: BigMac on Aug 18, 2008, 02:56: AM
the sport is big enough imo, if it is in the next olympics then by 2016 it will be huge.
Title: Re: Freestyle in the Olympics?
Post by: oLi on Aug 18, 2008, 03:03: AM
Finding the right judges would also be difficult because so many are good friends with eachother or enemies.
It's not like in some sports where none of the competitors have ever seen the judge before or anything like that. Having a non freestyler as a judge is out of the question, it'd be ridiculous. Just look at Red Bull in Vienna where Szymo who clearly by all means did a much better performance than his opponent and still didn't win. Freestyle in the Olympics is a dream for all of us I believe - what we need to do to make it happend is keep on freestyling, make videos and get more people to freestyle.

Title: Re: Freestyle in the Olympics?

nothing.
altho i personally dont think it wud work in olympics, cos fs and whose better has alot of opinionated base, and it varies between person to person.
some skill may be easy to one and hard for another person.
one style may look crap to one may look good to another.
whereas in olympic sports, most of them are u know whose won, done and dusted.
also i dont think personally it wud be a good step for fs. too commercial..more a keep it underground street thing for me..but thats mypersonal opinion
Title: Re: Freestyle in the Olympics?

Olympics is more about indivisual performances in various conventional human skills(endurance, speed, accuracy, etc). Also,it gives a lotta scope for performance arts..So,there shouldnt be many reasons why freestyle football shouldnt make it to the Olympics sooner, rather than later. And I dont think these games should include a lotta team sports, but thats another topic altogether.

macca u are very similar to my mum in the way u think she was talking about how freestyle should be in the olympics
but i agreeeee with the other posts woukld be very hard to find un bias judges that know about freestyle
Title: Re: Freestyle in the Olympics?
Post by: Javi on Aug 18, 2008, 08:10: AM
Don't want to be negative, but honestly I don't think freestyle will ever be in the Olympics, just because..
Every sport in the Olympics has an objective, or a goal you know, and Freestyle doesn't, it is a hobbie, not even a sport. You just do it for fun, you do it for yourself and to entretain people, it doesn't have an objective like the other sports..
I don't really know if you understand what I mean, but if you do, that's just my point of view; but yeah, nobody knows, maybe it will come in the next Olympics, or maybe not.
That's what I think ;)
Title: Re: Freestyle in the Olympics?
Post by: Sander on Aug 18, 2008, 08:13: AM
javi i agree with some points of your post, but what is the goal of e.g. gymnastics or figure skating?
Title: Re: Freestyle in the Olympics?
Post by: BigMac on Aug 18, 2008, 08:19: AM
yeah i suppose there is no clear way of winning, but in gymnastics it is based on individual performance. So in that respect it could qualify as an Olympic sport.

Ha, qualify as an Olympic sport speaking like i am sort of official here.
Title: Re: Freestyle in the Olympics?
Post by: sputnik on Aug 18, 2008, 08:50: AM
thisll never happen in time for London. the only reason something like BMXing can be in olympics is because its had years of legitimate and professionally done competitions, with an already strict and established points scoring system, worldwide recognition etc.

freestyle has none of this. it is very much an 'urban' urban sport, whereas skateboarding, bmxing have a proffessional side. freestyle is like freerunning/parkour. its still more of a hobby sport, than a pro sport, even if there are many 'pros' (in skill and in moneymaking) in there. how could it go into the olympics when we cant even judge which tricks are hardest, and who has good style. i know we could 'make it official', but appart from there being no legit freestyle organisation to propose it, it needs years of testing and trial of the new 'olympic's standard' of rules and comp settings, and theres no way that London 2012 could host freestyle. maybe 2016 if we get to work now...
Title: Re: Freestyle in the Olympics?
Post by: Sander on Aug 18, 2008, 08:57: AM
dudes i've done some research. for the male-sports a sport (remember that fs is not yet an official sport) must be performed in at least 4 continents (no problem;)) and in 75 countries (that may be the problem) to become an olympic sport. also when a new sport is added, an older one should be removed.

this makes it almost impossible for freestyle to become olympic, but maybe as a demonstrationsport, just like with teakwondo and triathlon.

maybe if we make a list of countries and try to have at least one example from each country, see if we can reach 75?

there are Gymnastics events in the Olympics where they play with a ball... its called Rhythmic Gymnastics i think... sure they use their hands, but so do freestylers... so in a way, freestyle is already in the Olympics :P

wales, england, northern ireland and scotland make team GB.

Team GB enter the olympics, no such thing as a welsh team in the olympics or english team. So dont put Ash - Wales.

yes then u can get 1 guy to do it on each discipline, szymo on lowers, skora on the rings, berno on parallel bars, zegan on the pommel horse, and amsti can fuck off

but yes i see what ur saying about the teamness. gd idea

George Chakour, old school. Was in Cero 1.

Not too sound negative but there are soo many sports that would enter the olympics before freestyle.....skateboarding....futsal....cricket...indoor cricket....and sooo many more that are way more popular than freestyle and still dont make it...freestyle isnt one of those type of sports.........just like juggling or hackysack to be honest i dont think it belongs there......but then again i dont think the horse trotting belongs there either...

Maybe your right, freestyle in the Olympics is not so realistic, cause i dont think it ever will be in the Olympics. Isnt there other ways freestyle could get more known and like an international competition?

"fs in the olympics or any major competition such as the big O, would it necessary be a good thing ornot"

please leave feel free to express ur views and comments.

i personally can see it being a bad thing, and being too commercial..and ending up being like one of the commercial fsers.
or maybe taking away something special such as the individuality about  the "sport /hobbie" but i dont know.

u?

well there you have a point nedved. if it becomes too famous, it looses it's indivuality. now many of us are the only persons in a big area that can do certain things with a ball. and concurrention is never good. also, when it's becoming too commercial you'll get that people want to become pro as fast as possible, and you end up with unstylish freestylers. and you get even more spam on youtube and tournaments as BF and NAS become unclear because so ridiculously many people want to join?

would freestyle have to be an official sport with a governing body (like FIFA) and offical rules first?

i reckon us to do like every 2 years a competition in a certain countrey dat freestylers can come and have battles like da polish freestylers choose a number of freestylers vs. da english freestylers(da english have to do da same thing) and etc. but we'll do da comp. in like an underground tunnel or somethin so we lk like gangstas, every team should have a certain shirt worn by da whole team!! and the winner of da comp. will be like da best nationality of freestyle till da next comp. comes, it's like da soccer worldcup but for  freestyle and without fans and stuff!!! da judges could be like palle, FX, was, farnworth etc.... i mean like da professional freestylers!!! i promise it would be fun, like almost 100 team, 5 or etc. in each team havin freestyle battles wid professionals judging!! tell me wt u think bout it
