Title: The Gas Situation
Post by: Adi on Jun 14, 2008, 09:32: AM
What does everyone think about gas getting more and more expensive? How much does it cost where you live? How is it impacting the way you commute?

Personally, I'm getting more and more pissed. I don't see how the government can allow the price to jump so much. I don't know if it's the lobbyists or the Middle Eastern countries, but I can't stand it anymore.

At the moment, I'm paying $4 per gallon. That's probably one of the lowest in the US as well.

I drive a Mustang which kills me even more. I barely get 220 miles per tank (15-16 gallons) when I drive in the city.

The gas over here is $1.35 a litre at the moment. In the summer it's expected to get to a $1.50.

This is not making me want to get my license.

I'm paying 3.9 - 4 a gallon for regular. I live in New Orleans so I don't have to drive as much, but I still do. $20 doesn't even give me half of a tank. I remember when $5 of gas used to be able to get you through a few days. I put in $30 of gas yesterday just to run errands.  :bang: I drive a 95 Toyota...it gets about 25 mpg in the city.

LOL! You guys really shouldn't complain so much, because in Europe, gas is much more expensive.
I get it that it's probably much higher than what you were used to, but for example, here in Croatia, 1 liter of gas is 10 kn and when converted that means a gallon is 8 $... Also, take into account your life standard & the life standard in Croatia, that is - the salaries.
But on the other hand, in Iran a liter of gas is 2 cents, which is 7,56 cents for a gallon.

yes it is, but you all also have much less "space."  you all also have much better public transportation (from what i understand, feel free to correct me if i'm wrong).

a "short drive" for a few of my family members out west is less than an hour (or up to 70ish miles).

when your country is aproximatley 1.98 miles long, you don't worry about gas prices. I usually walk everywhere.

I think it's good that prices are going up. It'll encourage people to drive less and generate less pollution. And also, I agree with Borg. I'm gonna wait a year before getting my licence. I don't need it anyways because Toronto has a great public transit system.

Suffer. I'm on LPG, while my unleaded or premium petrol counterparts pay from the late $60s to the early $90s for a full tank depending on the car, I'm paying $32 full tank. Prices can rise as much as they want I don't care really. If I was those stupid Arabs I would make you pay allot more for it and sit on stacks of more money. Don't even complain like that.

True that Croatia is much, much smaller than the US, but compare our average wages with yours and take into account that our gas prices are twice as expensive, you'll get what I'm talking about. :)
BTW, I used Croatia only as an example, you can take bigger European countries like Germany, France or Great Britain where the prices are even higher.

8.85 dollars in Britain. Soon to rise to about 9.7  again, i know what you say about size of country etc... but i dont really think that equates to you having less than half the price of gas (at your peak!)

i understand that it probably wouldn't be a complete equalizing factor (i meant that statement more as a thought + something to put adi's and elite's bitching into perspective).  i also think that'd it'd factor in more than you'd think e.g. my state is larger than your country by area (and i don't live in a particularly large state).  of course "space" would be one of many factors (pop density, infrastructure, patterns of movement--who knows everyone in england could drive to scotland once a month  :dontknow:, etc.) that would go into a complete analyzation of gas prices and it's effect on the population in each of our respective countries.  i think it would be kind of cool to see some kind of corrected gas price.

i just know that next school year i'll be able to ride the bus from my apartment to school and back.

in the majority of all cases cars are used not for epic journeys but relatively small ones, on a day to day basis. just in bigger areas people having a higher chance of taking a long journey. but most car users basically everywhere use their cars for journeys under an hour, and thats why i personally feel its not such a massive factor.

and no1 from england ever EVER goes into scotlnd :dontknow:

lol. back in 1920 you could buy everything cheaper. ever heard a 50s star say 'i was making 400,000 a year, which by todays money is 10 bajillion a year'. money is worth a lot less now than it was many years ago, not just the oil.

housing prices vary A LOT.  housing and land can be very cheap, or housing and land can be RIDICULOUSLY expensive

unless the government (of any country) makes it mandatory (through a transitional) itll be so ineffective that itll be worth jack shit (i like overusing brackets).

I know, nothing will come of it for many years, if that.

Just like the convergence to electric cars, it's happening very slowly. Most people could be driving nice electric cars right now, but it's not happening for many reasons.

Quite a few people are coming up with plans to steal gas. If prices go up much higher I'll be joining them.

some in the UK are trying to stop others from using the 2 main suppliers (shell and bp i think) and using the stations that are supplied by them instead so if the suppliers of the main 2 get more customers it would force shell and bp to lower the prices.

They used to do that in the old Yugoslavia when gas was expensive and there was a shortage of it. You used to be able to stick a tube down and suck in a little with your mouth, then let it flow into a container. Not sure what the gas tanks are like with the new cars but you should still be able to do it as long as the cars don't have the locked gas lids.
