Roberto Mancini was sacked as coach of Serie A champions Inter Milan on Thursday opening the way for Portuguese coach Jose Mourinho to replace him.
The 43-year-old former Italy international striker, who under him Inter won three successive titles, is favoured to take over at English Premiership giants Chelsea and is largely expected to be replaced by Mourinho.
Inter - who won the first of their three successive titles in 2006 only because those above them were either demoted or deducted points over the match-fixing scandal - released a terse statement about his sacking.
“Inter Milan informed Roberto Mancini that he had been relieved of his role as coach of the team, especially because of his comments that he was not going to stay after the end of the season following the Inter Milan v Liverpool Champions League match on March 11,” read their statement.
Mancini, however, had rescinded those comments the following day declaring that he had made them in the heat of the moment following Inter's elimination from the Champions League in humiliating fashion losing 3-0 on aggregate.
However, lending less credibility to Inter's reason for sacking Mancini are the comments by club president Massimo Moratti when he announced that the coach had changed his mind about leaving at the end of the season.
“I've had a talk with Mancini, who confirmed to me that he wanted to stay at Inter even next year and to see out his contract and he wants to win the Champions League next season,” Moratti told La Gazzetta dello Sport website on March 12.
“Mancini's words surprised me, I didn't expect it and even less so I believe the people close to him,” he said.

Mancini's €30m Sacking
Inter president Massimo Moratti will have to pay Roberto Mancini €30m in compensation following the coach’s exit.
Reports in Italy suggest that the Nerazzurri chief will settle a massive pay off with Mancini after his contract was terminated on Tuesday evening. Jose Mourinho is already in Milan and hours away from signing a €9m per year deal.
However, before Moratti rolls cash towards the Portuguese coach, he has to settle the bill with Mancini.
According to CalcioMercato, the former Lazio player had five years left on his contract worth €6m per season.
Therefore Moratti has to give Mancini a €30m pay off. He also has to compensate the former coach’s assistants - including Sinisa Mihajlovic, who was Mancini’s number two - as well as goalkeeping coach Giulio Nuciari, Fausto Salsano, Dario Marcolin and Ivan Carminati, who were all Mancini’s coaching staff.
Inter tried to reach a deal with everyone over their final pay offs on Tuesday night but failed and now Moratti has to pay the full amount accordingly.
he ruined his chances of staying after the Liverpool game when he siad he would quit
i always knew after that point that he would be around for the next season

Mourinho will be appointed as Roberto Mancini’s successor at San Siro over the coming week or so, and he has already begun preparing for the summer transfer market.
There has been much speculation in the Italian press over the past few days that Zlatan Ibrahimovic may move to Barcelona, and indeed quotes attributed to the Swede’s agent Mino Raiola revealed that a swap deal including Samuel Eto’o was on the cards.
Tuttosport today claims that Mourinho has told Inter President Massimo Moratti that Ibrahimovic is not part of his plans for the club, and he wants him sold immediately.
The ‘Special One’ is said to agree with those who believe that Ibrahimovic fails when it comes to the big games, particularly in the Champions League, a competition that Mourinho has been brought to Inter to win.
Mourinho also wants to sell Ibrahimovic because he wants there to be a total break from the whole idea that Inter are only dominating Serie A as a result of the Calciopoli crisis. Many people partly attribute their success since 2006 to the purchase of Ibrahimovic (and Vieira) from Juventus, and Mourinho wants to try and remove Inter’s association with Calciopoli.
i wish all the worst for Inter and Moby

Mancini And Moratti In Explosive Fight
It is being reported that Inter chairman Massimo Moratti and his former team coach Roberto Mancini had a heated exchange on the day of his dismissal...
According to Il Giornale, the meeting between Mancio and Moratti lasted fourteen minutes - contrary to the previous reports of a two-minute meeting and one that lasted 20 minutes - and while Moratti was said to be calm and collected throughout, Mancini was furious with the decision that he believed had been coming since January.
Here is the conversation between the two, according to Il Giornale:
Moratti: Hello Roberto, how are you?
Mancini: I am fine, thank you.
Moratti: How's the family?
Mancini: Good, thanks.
Moratti: Roberto, I have to give you some bad news.
Mancini: I knew it.
Moratti: I have to let you go.
Mancini: No, you want to let me go, it's different.
Moratti: No, don't say these things. You know, the team, I spoke to them and something is not right. So, it's better to change.
Mancini: Don't say this, you already had Mourinho lined up back in January.
Moratti: No, not at all, it's not what you think.
Mancini: Nooo! You have been giving me all sorts of stories and lies for months. I have always behaved in the right way and I have never lied to you. I cannot understand this decision.
Moratti: What are you talking about? Don't be like this, listen to me!
Mancini: Listen to what? You didn't even enjoy this centenary Scudetto.
Moratti: What has that got to do with this? Calm down and lets talk calmly.
Mancini: Seeing that you're letting me go, I can't even be bothered to listen to you anymore.
Moratti: Don't leave it like this, let us at least talk about a good exit payment.
Mancini: I don't want your good exit payment, you have to give me the money for my four years of contract and I won't even take off one Euro. But don't worry, you will be hearing from my lawyers and with this I am off.
Whether the conversation or indeed the incidents spoken of are true remains to be seen, though one thing that is almost certain is that Jose Mourinho will sign as coach for the club in the coming days.
Mancini is expected to receive up to €30 million in compensation for his dimissal. Mourinho is reportedly being lined up for a three-year deal worth €27 million.
