I read a previous Rooney topic and read some ridiculous comments. I cannot believe people are as stupid to make such comments as Moby did, like this:
"in my opinion so no body begain insults and things like that. he is not a good player. he really has no skill. he suits the EPL since shooting is the only thing he is good at." Just to make it clear I DID NOT write this, this was written by Moby. I'm very disappointed in you Moby. How can you say such a thing? You must have very little knowledge of the game

I think we have started a real Rooney debate here haven't we? Rooney has been rather unlucky with injuries the past couple of years but you can't doubt his natural talent. Remember that he is still only 22, younger than Torres, Adebayor etc. who play in the Premiership.
He is not necessarily an out and out striker though. He plays best with a striker who stays high and gets in behind, leaving Rooney to come deep, connect things and run at people. I think he is such an all round player that he can play in any sort of striking role but there's no doubt he is at his best when dropping into the hole. By playing with Tevez I think it has nullified him slightly at times. Remember how great he was in Euro 2004 when he played with Owen? He was fantastic. Even since then he has scored big goals for Man. Utd. I just can't see how people don't see the amazing natural ability he has. When Rooney is fully fit, you see a player better than Tevez, better than Adebayor. You are talking about a player that is one of the best in the world. I'll hold my hands up in that I am English and slightly biased but please guys, you cannot tell me that this lad doesn't have great ability.

Yeah, perfect example in the Euro 04s.. he scored a hat trick, and was bloody amazing! :)
And it's not even like we look up to him to score, I know he's the striker and striker's are supposed to score, but he doesn't have to when Ronaldo is there breaking records and whatnot. Rooney has done his job by setting up chances and creating havoc in the box.
He's backchecked hard too to help the defence, something he doesn't even have to do really..

Moby, do you realise what you have written here? You can name thousands better than him? I'm sure Alex Ferguson would spend 30m pounds on an 18 year old that had a thousand players better than him. Ok lets break this down shall we:
Do you think he has a good touch?
Do you think he has good vision?
Do you think he has a good ping?
Does he have good strength and speed?
I am interested in your answers to these, because if you say no to any of them then I think you should stop watching football as you have no appreciation of it.

Moby, not many can. Rooney was young and that was his first real INTERNATIONAL level hat trick. Not many strikers have gotten a hat trick in international level, and even when they have played for so many years. Rooney was young and still did that.

I'm sorry totalfootball, but whether Rooney is your cup of tea or not you cannot make comments such as Elite. Am I the only one on here who thinks this? Come on guys, lets stop being so nice here. Forums are for debate, and difference of opinion but everybody on here needs a decent level of understanding of the game. I can't understand how someone can come up with such ridiculous comments. Imagine this Elite lad in a room with the top people in the game saying these things, they would just laugh at him. Some people just want to be a bit different and have outrageous views but there does need to be a grain of truth in it.
Elite, how can you watch a Man.Utd game and not see that Rooney has a fantastic touch? Do you watch the game? I'm lost for words on this.

I think his touch is alright. I used to think it was better but after watching him this season, it doesn't seem to be so special. This is especially true when he comes back into the midfield to get the ball. Too often his first touch lets him down especially if he has a man right on him. I'm not sure if it's necessarily his touch or his uncertainty on where to go next with his first touch. Up front, he's much smoother with his touches.

i hate to bring up old wounds but ouch!
its is common knowledge that i dont like man u and all thier players but you have to be respectful of the players. Rooney does not suck mind you he is one of the hardest workers in the premiership which is saying a lot and he has shown great vision and skill which is why he is at a big club. he was the leading scorer at euro 2004 and was injured the last few games. and to score goals you have to be good at more than just shooting. go to youtube

You are oh so wrong Diablo. He is a fantastic player. Granted, he has not played THAT well this season but he has had injury problems. I expect to see an improved Rooney next season after a full summers rest. Mark my words, Rooney is very good, and will get better.

Atleast Drogba hit the post. I have no hatred for Rooney. I just dont think he deserves ManUnited. ManUnited is too good for Rooney,He shouldve stayed at Everton. Every couple of years they pick a young English lad, transfer him to a 'big' English club and hype him up so much and try to convince the world England has a top 5 world player. They did it with Owen he wasn't special. They did it with Beckham a man whose never dribbled or took on an opponent in his career. Its all bullshit hype the whole world is aware of it except the sheep.
I would understand if they did it with Lampard or Gerrard atleast these guys are talanted and proven. But damn Rooney is pathetic compared to the worlds best. Thats real talk. It is comments like these that will get you no respect from people in the football world. Let me go through your mistakes point by point.
1) It is true that the English media do hype players up but Owen is special. At 18 he scored 2 goals in the World Cup, one of which was a very special goal. He then went on to scoop the European player of the year award, special players get that award mate.
2) What does it matter if Beckham doesn't take players on. His end product is superb. You are entitled to your opinion, but do it with grace and thought. You are making comments that literally cannot be true. You sound stupid and you need to think before you start typing on here. I see that post already got under the skins of a few fanboys. First of Own scored two goals in the World cup big whop. What has he done ever since hes rotting on the Newcastle United bench as we speak. You don't know me so don't claim a few bullshit tricks and flicks impress me. A great player has to be all rounded. Not only be able to cross the ball and take a free kick. Look at Zidane for example he was the type of player when it came to it can split the defense with his dribbling, great passer of the ball, can deliver a great cross, great in the air and strikes a mean free kick. The media was trying to put Becks on Zidanes level.

You know how the English are if Alex Ferguson himself such a respected figure at United. Was to have a fall out with Rooney and stop playing him his job would be in jeopardy. What do you think they would say about Capello. They would start questioning him. Sven was doing a great job. Maclaren was doing the right thing but its the duds on the fields mistakes they are getting sacked for.
I have noticed all people say to try and defend Rooney is 'Maradona said this about Rooney Pele said that' No disrespect to the legends, but I have said it before these guys will say any thing to remain relevant and be part of the hype. Don't question the thought that goes into my posts and call me stupid what I said stands I know the truth can hurt sometimes but the sooner you English can see that most of these guys are garbage compared to top international players the better. Trust me players like SWP, Joe Cole, Bently, Lennon, Wallcot, Lita, Johnson ect are given a chance and not kept away because players like Rooney are selected because of the club they play for and there name.

you can't qualify or disqualify wayne rooney as a good or bad player on goals alone. you can't sit there and evaluate a player's entire performance with one area that is determined to be expected of a player's position on a team sheet. if we're going to talk statistics, he was third in the premier league in assists.
EDIT: michael owen has had serious injury issues.

I would say he is overrated ever since the Euro 04 the media and allot of fans have been talking about him as if he is a footballing god. I'm not fully discrediting the man but work rate and assist doesn't make a great striker. Some times hes on the pitch when Tevez is sitting on the bench its very frustrating. Hes £28 million. Adebayor, Drogba or Ibrahimovi? who in my opinion are more complete strikers aren't worth that much.

Rooney is only 22 though and was bought when he was 18. He is special because he is only 22 and one of the European Champions main players. Give the lad a break. He is a very big talent. His performances at the top level prove this. He has performed in the Champions League, Euro 2004 and The Premiership. You guys are too quick to jump on the bandwagon against him.

I agree he is not one of the greats but he is a special player. You make no sense with your arguments. You are saying Beckham is bad because he doesn't take players on and is not the all round player. If thats the case then, would you say Maradona wasn't all he was cracked up to be because he couldn't use his right foot?...No, because that is stupid because he is the greatest player that has ever lived.

I swear nothing is ever going to get through to you. You will defend every single English player. There is no point, if I was to say Vinnie Jones wasn't great you would argue against it. Here is how it is Beckham wasn't among the elites in his time, nor was Owen or Rooney right now. Don't avoid that. Stop being such a crusader for footballers because they are English.

I do not defend every English player. Ask my friends, Adi will vouch for me. I criticize the England team as a whole and individual players. I don't like Terry, I don't like Lampard, I don't like Micah Richards. I think England get popped off the pitch by teams like Spain, even Croatia. The reason we do are because a lot of our players and technically inadequate. I know this!!! But you are making claims that are false. You probably like players like Lampard and Terry and think they are our best players. They are the very reason we struggle.

I will have to disagree with anyone who says he's the best striker, or one of the best strikers in the world, if simply he gets some assists in. He has pace and strength, but he's just lacking that eye for goal, in which a striker needs.
Another thing I would say why people get so pissed off about him, is that the English press/media severley overrate him with crap like being "the best player in the past decade" which is not true. Meh, just my thoughts on this.. :rolleyes:

I read the sports papers religiously and have never seen a writer claim him to be the best player in the past decade.

What are defining a great player as? A player that is near the top of the game presently? Or a player close to the top of the game ever? If we are talking currently then I believe Rio Ferdinand close to the perfect center half, arguably the best in the world right now.

I think Rooneys main problem (and the england team as a wholes problem) is that he lacks technical ability compared to the top players from countries such as Netherlannds,Spain,Portugal,Germany...etc. He does work very hard however and he runs and runs and doesn't stop going occasionally this can mean his positional sense is a bit off as in occasionally he ends up in a position he has no need to be in, but most of the time this is very beneficial for Man United. He has decent shooting ability however it is quite erratic and he relies a lot on the fact that he is rather speedy for his size and just sues a combination of speed and strength really to get past people, this is in no way a bad thing i think it is just not enough to consider him one of the top players, as his techincal ability as in touches dribbling ability and overall vision are not quite good enough in my opinion yet.
