Title: Lubasz Freestyle Comp Results

Winner: Gunther
Second: Lotar
3rd: Tobias
4th: Mikolaj

Some surprised: Szymo and Skora out in first round.

Azun isn't improving much.  Freestyle seems to have risen past him, almost to the point where he's just barely hanging in with the middle of the pack.

I don't know. I didn't see anything from it, but I think competitions are weird at the moment. Judging is also very inconsistent and still growing. Freestyle is at such an early stage in it's competition formats most judges are downright biased for what they prefer. Sports like skateboarding and even more so gymnastics have been around for a while, so judges are more genuinely knowledgeable on everything.

I agree with your comments about judges but I don't see how you're connecting that with Azun.  Are you implying Azun's early exit is due to the judges?

It's certainly possible, but even outside of comps, when was the last time you saw a dope video from Azun?  Boring freestyler if you ask me.  Robot.

At the same time, Gunther could be considered a robot. I mean, he is definitely very skillful, but when is the last time you saw him do much other than tatw and atawt nt? He's winning competitions with one type of combo for the most part. For me, unless Azun just drops the ball far more than Gunther, Azun wins on being higher level all around whether or not Gunther's lowers are better or not. The current judging standards seem to favor hardcore over variety every time. I personally disagree. I also think other areas can be hardcore like Luki's uppers and Tokura's acrobatic moves.

I wasn't mentioning as much Azun's performance as I was mentioning you cannot really tell the level based on a competition. Any knockout competition is very hard to continually be successful. I think his level is more or less the same, maybe a bit better. The difference is there are more people at his high level to compete against him. Also, lowers really does seem to be the area there has been the most improvement. I think there are freestylers genuinely better than him in lowers, and I don't think anyone can deny lowers are judged as more important at the moment.

Lotar should have won...
FINAL BATTLE LUBASZ FREESTYLE NIGHT - Gunther Celli (ITA) vs Mateusz Odrzygóźdź LOTAR (POL) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fz3hpPxk2HM#)

It was very close if you ask me.  Depends what you like or what you're looking for as a judge.  I like Lotar's style a lot more... it's much cleaner and precise whereas Gunther seems to chase the ball around.

I think Gunther tried more hardcore moves though which helped.  He also showed more stage presence I think.

agree with Royal, lotar should deffo have won...but both did great for sure! i just have a huge problem with things like gunther does at 1:14 and 1:20....it has NOTHING to do with freestyle football, he just kicks the ball up and does some shit, he could've just let the ball down beside him and do it...

I'm surprised at such a fast type of falls off players like Skóra or Szymo. The level was very high.
In my opinion, in finale should have won Lotar. Yes, Gunther once again showed his amazing skill, repetition (which I really appreciate him), but all the time, as mentioned redsforlife, the game is the same. Lotar showed interesting creativity at SD, played flawlessly.

This was one of Gunther's best performances in recent times in my opinion. I actually disagree with Emil on the tricks he mentioned. Being able to perform the physical feat while not dropping the ball is quite impressive. The hand spring in particular, because he has to take his eyes off the ball. He also made a fairly good touch. He also didn't do quite as much of only tatw and atatw nt as he usually does. I mean, he has to do some, because that's his trademark. It's just I could never vote him winner based on that alone. I've never cared much for his uppers, and he has almost not good sits. He did show more creativity and good transitions in this battle than usual.

Lotar is a much better freestyler for me overall. I'm a big fan of his. Overall, he had more variety in every aspect. His lowers probably weren't quite as difficult as Gunther's, but having  a large variety is difficult as well. Sits and uppers Lotar wins every time. This time, transitions were fairly close, but I may give it to Lotar for better execution.

Verdict: Close battle, but I may give it to Lotar.

Adi mentioned showmanship. That's something that is really missing from most freestylers. They don't seem to understand it's a show. Gunther has great showmanship for battles, not as much for LPs, but great for battles. He comes off with a type of cockiness or arrogance that is great for a battle. I'm actually in favor of that for the performance. It definitely means something to me even if I'm judging. Lotar looked more or less like a freestyle robot. He had no emotion. He just freestyled. If he'd added a bit more showmanship, it might have tipped the scales a bit. Whether you realize it or not, you will subconsciously enjoy watching the freestyler with more personality.

I disagree, Gunther is much more versatile freestyler and saying he can do only TATW and ATATW nt is not true.

Cannot say whether Gunther did or didnt deserved to win (unlike most of people posting comments on YT, I usually try not to jump into conclusions), both did great and it was really good to watch! I think freestyle just got to the stage where its sometimes impossible to tell who is better, even if it was only sitdowns/uppers/lowers competition.

No one is saying here that Gunther can only TATW and ATATW. In my speech and redsforlife you can find a great admiration for him. This is one of the best players in the world.
However, objectively speaking, Lotar has a higher allround skills, a more diverse and creative actions during battle.
I recommend watch his videos on the web. Amazing style.

Good that you know Adi.

1. i have a kne problem for 8 months now(also in lecce). I did qualification in lubasz with almost no lowers. Just basic.
2. i went to lubazs because i want more competition practice. I have problem with nervs.
3. i lost against the best player in the competition: Tobias. (i tried harder lowers against him, but it was not possible).
4. tobias won totaly fair.
5. you havnt seen all battles, and you wasnt there to get the feeling. Video is something else, its all about first impression...

Have a nice day.

Thanks for explaining.  I can definitely respect the knee issue holding you back.  I'm coming back from my third ACL surgery so I know how tough that can be.  Good luck!
