As you can see, you can't rate your own posts, but next to other's you can hit the up or down arrow to rate if the post is good.

OK, it was a permission issue. It's fixed now and you should be able to see it. :)

Sounds like a renamed version of the karma system. I really don't want this place to become exactly like other sites. I'm sure the creative freestylers can come up with better ideas than this.
Edit:Another reason is that people aren't held accountable or don't provide reason. This is why the Karma system failed. If someone has had a number of good posts in the past and then someone comes along with a grudge or notices they haven't been posting many good posts, they just down voted every hour until it was at a number they deemed worthy.

Karma wasn't really related to posts specifically. You could only see the total points for a person in their profile but it had nothing to do with a specific post. This tracks the actual ratings for each post.
I don't see why it's bad. Nothing bad comes of it. People will up or down your post. It's not the end of the world. Most people will only +/- a post if it's considerably better or worse than others.

We should make it that you can up respect but not down it. Some people will be discouraged to say their own opinions if they feel it will be disliked and it would lower their respect. Which results in less posts.

I almost agree with you. I'm more on the side of either have this feature or don't. I think being able to post down makes it fair for people that come in new, because they can catch up. I do agree that some people get offended by people disliking their posts. It's inevitable. I'll leave it up to Adi whether he likes this or not. If you really don't like it, just down Adi's posts. lol

Yea, I'd rather not have it but Adi likes it and it doesn't look like he's going to remove it. I can only think that this will better the system. Catching up shouldn't matter, the people who stay here will get there eventually. It's better to know that some people have been here longer and will be more helpful generally compared to people who just joined the forum.
EDIT: Another idea if the no down vote option is implemented, a reset at the end of each month would prevent people from becoming overly respected or under respected. This would allow all opinions to be said and a lost less would be held back.

The problem is some people will be scared of posting controversial topics that are great for forums if they might get voted down. It seems silly, but it happens. Maybe a like system like they have on Facebook would work better.

Then remove the respect part in the profile portion. Either way, if people aren't seeing what you're seeing from now, what makes you think other or newer members are going to see it that way.

I can remove it but I really think you guys are beating it into the ground for no real reason. People's feelings won't get hurt. I'm the only one voting things up and down anyways by the look of things. I don't think anyone will slam anyone with this little feature. If someone is so scared of people voting them down because of a post, they shouldn't be posting on a forum.

It's your reputation power. I guess it judges you on how many posts you have. Put your mouse over the green thing above the online square. People with higher reputation have many more bars. When you put your mouse over this it shows these statements.

Reputation comes from posts, starting threads, and people hitting the (http://www.beyondfootball.com/forum/Themes/outline_1111/images/karma.gif) icon under your Avatar. You can view the reputation you've been given under Profile --> View Reputation. It's separate from the up/down Respect feature.

Made the buttons a little cleaner so should look nicer now.
