Saw this yesterday. Was wondering what the heck it was all about since everyone was posting it on Facebook. After watching, I had to repost it.
I'm thinking about buying the Action Kit and donating some money. It's for a good cause and it's a great way to create awareness.
If you search for Kony 2012 in Google, you'll see two websites that call this a scam. What a joke. I can't believe someone can be so ignorant to write baseless articles and try to dismiss the whole thing.

i guess this is one of the articles?
http://thedailywh.at/2012/03/07/on-kony-2012-2/ (http://thedailywh.at/2012/03/07/on-kony-2012-2/)
i would like to hear some arguments of you against the arguments of this article and more importantly where the money for a professional 30 minute video like this came from. furthermore they are not saying the entire campaign is shit because it is great that so many people are aware of kony's existence.
-
I guarantee you 90% or more of the population doesn't know about Kony. I know that's the case in the US, which is sad. This video is to create awareness, which it has done brilliantly. People in the US will contact the government, they will donate, and all this will help the situation.
The money comes from the donations. Not 100% of the donations go to Africa... some of the funds are witheld for things like this... promotional videos to create awareness and therefore help raise more funds. It's a very smart move.
Read some of the comments on that site and you'll see lots of good arguements as to why that article is full of crap. The stuff that stands out to me are his weak sources (most are blogs with opinions like his) and his negative tone towards a good cause. He critizices lots of things and misses the big picture. There will always be faults with videos like this, but the point is to engage the watcher, bring out emotion, and allow the watcher to do his own research and share/support. They've done all that. You see this everywhere now... so they've done their job perfectly.

ok so i ask you why do they need such a big video to motivate the gouvernment with everybody sharing the video when the gouvernment has allready been haunting kony for years? also why does the charity navigator rate them with two stars? and last but not last you call a yale professor a weak source?

The government has been hunting him in limited fashion... limited resources, limited will. That won't catch him. There's a reason he's been running around for 20+ years. They need more will and the only way that will happen is if people really give a crap about it. You think the US will send in forces into Africa without a reason? You know how it is. They'll only go in if there's something in it for them. Unfortunately, there's not much to gain for the US. However, if millions of its citizens rise up, protest, and create a big havoc, the governments will be forced into action. It's always like that. Right now there are limited "assistants" in African helping the Ugandan forces organize, etc but that's not enough. More forces need to be there and more of them need to be dispursed across the other African countries where Kony has moved to. With more recognition of the matter in the US and other countries, there is a great chance the government will feel obliged to assist.
also why does the charity navigator rate them with two stars? and last but not last you call a yale professor a weak source?
Because they didn't allow their records to be independently reviewed. Big deal... look at it how you want. Only 31% of their donations go to Africa but you gotta realize that there are tons of expenses running this company. Their founders make under 100K which is reasonable and they have tons of expenses for travel to Africa, recording materials, and promotional things. If you watch the video, you know they are doing it for a good cause. You can always question things and think of conspiracy theories, but personally, I choose to believe that these people are doing it for a good cause.
The professor might seem like a good source but even he is just offering his opinion, like I can.
Here is what he said:
There’s also something inherently misleading, naive, maybe even dangerous, about the idea of rescuing children or saving of Africa. It’s often not an accidental choice of words, even if it’s unwitting. It hints uncomfortably of the White Man’s Burden. Worse, sometimes it does more than hint. The savior attitude is pervasive in advocacy, and it inevitably shapes programming. Usually misconceived programming. The saving attitude pervades too many aid failures, not to mention military interventions. The list is long.
Don't agree with that... there is nothing naive and misleading about saving children who were captured by this idiot. It's only moral to do so, no excuses.
What's crap is the writer's mentality towards the whole thing. A lot of the things he's bashing is beyond the point of the video and effort. The goal of the charity and video is to create awareness and push people and government into action. They are reaching out to the right starts and political figures. Their intent is not to fight the actual war. They are trying to do what they can but ultimately the government needs to step in and decide the right course of action. The video and charity are trying to assist with that. The article puts too much stress and pressure on the Charity to solve this whole problem. Their objective, however, is not to solve this on their own. They are just part of this, trying to add extra pieces that can make it happen.
-
By the way, almost 50 million views.
Check the statistics... it's being watched all over the world... something that's very rare for videos.

My friend Stephen wrote an article on this whole thing. I suggest some of you read it before you start throwing your money at the screen.
Unless you live under a rock, you’ve seen the word Kony all over Facebook thanks to the eleventh film put out by Invisible Children (IC), aptly titled “KONY 2012.” If you haven’t watched the video, it is available here. It’s about a half an hour long, but I promise you that you can skip the first eight minutes without missing anything crucial. The video basically explains that Joseph Kony has been kidnapping young boys and forcing them to kill their parents and join his infamous Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA). They also use the girls as sex slaves, but the video only mentions that for about two seconds, so I guess I shouldn’t dwell on it because it’s less important. Anyway, the video urges its viewers to purchase a Kony 2012 action kit (for the low, low price of thirty dollars!) which includes a t-shirt, some stickers, a poster maybe, and a really fashionable bracelet. It’s basically a kit that lets everyone in the world know you’re acting for a cause you discovered earlier in the week.
Almost immediately after KONY2012 went viral, a political science student in Canada launched a blogexplaining why the campaign was a bad idea. To get the full gist of what he says, read it, obviously, but I can give you a basic rundown of where he stands. He asserts that the world isn’t unaware of Kony, which is true. He’s number one on the International Criminal Court’s list of criminals. So, is more awareness going to solve the problem? He also points out a few misleading facts in the video, which I’ll address later. IC’s semi-shady finances are also brought up.
So, here are the facts according to yours truly. But before I say anything, let me preface it with two things:
ONE: Yes, Kony is a bad guy. Duh. As the faux-hawked ginger in Community said, “NO ONE IS ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THIS ISSUE.”
TWO: I am not trying to talk you out of supporting KONY 2012. I am trying to talk you out of throwing your money at a cause without doing research. I understand that being an activist is cool, but ignorantly throwing your money at an organization isn’t.
First off, the KONY 2012 video implies that Kony currently has an army of 30,000 children armed with AK-47s. However, that number (30,000) is representative of Kony’s actions over more than 20 years. As of now, the LRA is only in the few hundreds. I learned that here.
http://blog.foreignpolicy.com/posts/2012/03/07/guest_post_joseph_kony_is_not_in_uganda_and_other_complicated_things (http://blog.foreignpolicy.com/posts/2012/03/07/guest_post_joseph_kony_is_not_in_uganda_and_other_complicated_things)
Second, the the video very smoothly glides over the fact that Kony is not in Uganda. They do say that he has moved into other countries. They don’t say that he fled into other countries. The LRA is not growing in size. They are shrinking and running. I also learned that here. (At the Above link).
Third, IC supports the Ugandan military. Not “support” as in they are behind them all the way, but “support” in that they give money to them. The communication director at IC justifies this by saying they “do not defend any of the human rights abuses perpetrated by the Ugandan government or the Ugandan army” and that “the only feasible and proper way to stop Kony and protect the civilians he targets is to coordinate efforts with regional governments.” Whether you agree with this is up to you. Here are some reasons why working with the Ugandan government might not be awesome.
Read about his justification here: http://www.invisiblechildren.com.s3-website-us-east-1.amazonaws.com/critiques.html (http://www.invisiblechildren.com.s3-website-us-east-1.amazonaws.com/critiques.html)
Fourth, only a third of IC’s income goes to “direct services.” Their financials are public, and not too difficult to understand. I’m sure page six will strike your interest, especially if you add “Travel and Transportation” to “Compensation” and compare that to “Direct Services.” Again, how you feel about this is up to you.
View their financial records here: http://c2052482.r82.cf0.rackcdn.com/images/737/original/FY11-Audited%20Financial%20Statements.pdf?1320205055 (http://c2052482.r82.cf0.rackcdn.com/images/737/original/FY11-Audited%20Financial%20Statements.pdf?1320205055)
Fifth, in the video, IC says that US support in this situation could literally be withdrawn at any moment. This sense of urgency is hugely displaced. They portray it like this: if you don’t buy this action kit and post an abundance of statuses, Obama will pull out those 100 troops. In reality, there is no reason to believe this will happen.
Let me say once again: this is not to convince you not to support KONY 2012. I don’t care if you support this movement, because I do believe this cause is important. I’m just trying to convince you to really look into things. Because we live in the information era, we can watch the film, read an article in support of it, and order the kit within 45 minutes and not even think that there might be reasons not to. So, whatever you do, make sure you think about it. As a great man named Justin Burkholder once said (yesterday),”We buy into things too quickly to relieve our consciences but don’t really accomplish much. I don’t think that IC is manipulative or deceptive, I just think that Americans are dumb.”
Don’t be a dumb American. Think it over. I don’t care if you got shivers when that Mumford & Sons song started playing in the video. This is more important than relieving your conscience.

Uganda has Oil.
Also your main point seems to be to make people aware of this problem and i agree with you that this video does a great job in making people aware of this problem. but the second big message this vieo has is to donate money to invisible children to support the war against kony. and who is fighting this war? the army of uganda who is well known for killing homosexuals and also raping women. here you can see them in one and the same picture http://nationalpostnews.files.wordpress.com/2012/03/invisiblechildren11.jpg?w=620 (http://nationalpostnews.files.wordpress.com/2012/03/invisiblechildren11.jpg?w=620)
i wonder if the 5 year old would still like to be like his father now.
Furthermore it is just plain stupid to believe that it will be any useful to stop kony because there are 100s of konys in africa. you wont save any children if you can actually get kony.
and yeah it has been watched that many times because its reaching out for your very basic emotion, to save children. but you dont do that by sharing a video on the internet, its not as easy as that.
Its really a good thing that people know about kony now but this whole money donating thing doesnt seem serious to me.

I don't know man... raising the money is important too. I'm not saying they use 100% of the money correctly, but most charities don't. There are lots of expenses and managing millions of dollars usually results in a few leaks. I still think a lot of good comes of this. The money is helping with education, shelter, food, etc. Not all the money goes to the Ugandan army to fight Kony. I think some does but I'd say the majority goes to civil efforts.
As I said before, stuff like this is never perfect. You just have to decide if there is more good than bad. For me, I see plenty of good behind this.

Most charities dont use ANY of the money correctly ;) Thats why I have no problem with giving some money to a blind man in a subway, but I completely ignore anyone who is begging "Please, save the third world, they are starving, have bloody diarrhea and shit" because the people that need the money most likely wont see anything... :great:
-
Do you really think they invade in Uganda because of this Kony? :cheesy:
Didn't you learn by experience? After all the lies beginning with Afghanistan, after Iraq (lies about weapons of mass destruction, after Lybia (installing a new regime) and before Syria and Iran now this propaganda video about Kony. Haha wake up guys, they don't give a shit about human rights. Look at the laws which America has legislated the last months. Sry, I notice that I sound like Oli at this moment :-D But for me this is too clearly...
-
The US hasn't invaded Uganda... they just sent a few "consultants" to help with the situation. They don't see a need to go in, which is wrong.
What laws has American legislated over the last few months that are so terrible? :017:
-
The US hasn't invaded Uganda... they just sent a few "consultants" to help with the situation.
Which situation? I heard several speeches from Ugandans which said that Kony hasn't been seen there the last 6 years and no one cares about it now. Try to think clearly: USA bombed Iraq for several reasons (like oil, install a new regime, by the way you can test new military weapons), the whole war based on a lie. Hundreds of thousands people died, most of them: CHILDREN! Btw they partly use(d) uranium ammunition, so they also destroy many lifes of children because they will be borned in future with obstructions. And that's not a conspriracy or sth., it's the bitter truth. Now, an emotional video has been made about Kony, that he rapes children etc, which got nearly 100 million views in only a few days. Everyone who doesn't share this vid on fb etc., HAS NO HEART! So...as always you have to ask the question: Who benefits from this?
they just sent a few "consultants" to help with the situation.
Consultants? Surely not...about 5000 soldiers have been sent to Uganda to find Kony. And as always, this is just a beginning. Remember Libya? The goal was to create a no fly zone. But how did it end? With bombing the whole infrastructure and thousands of civilians, including..guess who..THE CHILDREN :-) I know I'm slightly off-topic, but I just want to show it's always the same, always the same lies. And after all these lies: Do you really think they care about any Children or human rights? :-D The media manipulates us so hard, that we sometimes think war is peace.
They don't see a need to go in, which is wrong.
No reason to go in? A high amount of oil & natural gas has been found in 2009. Google if you don't believe :)
What laws has American legislated over the last few months that are so terrible? :017:
Never heard of NDAA (National Defense Authorization Act)...or ACTA/SOPA? If not, please google it :-)
-
SOPA won't pass and it's not official yet... just trying to make its way through the court system, as are 1000s of other laws.
The US has too much oil in the Middle East and off-shore to bother with Uganda for that reason. They haven't commited to helping Africa once in its history, and this hasn't changed.
They have sent only a few consultants to help the Ugandan army strategically attack Kony. The US has never sent 5000 soldiers for this cause. Please show proof if you think otherwise.
The US messed up with Iraq and everyone here knows it. At least they got Sadaam but that's not a good enough reason to spend billions and kill thousands. Everyone knows we got it wrong, and we can thank Bush for that one. At least Obama has a better foreign policy and does things strategically rather than simply sending thousands of soldiers to attack a country for one person.
