Title: RBSS losing credibility?
Post by: BigMac on Nov 01, 2011, 11:24: AM
Yo,

I was just thinking, we are in the third season of Red Bull street style now and I was wondering if the competition has lost credibility?

I think it has, simply because it hasn't evolved with freestyle, infact it's got worse. When the competition first came out it was mad exciting, finally a platform that can display freestyle worldwide and guys who put the work in can reap the rewards. Now it feels tired and boring, the balls, the judges etc gives you more to worry and complain about than to be excited about and praise. Even the tricks and styles are becoming a bit tiresome in some aspects, imagine that, a competition where the freestylers adapt to what the sponsor wants instead of the other way round? lol

With comps like Pyrzyce, Prague and WFFCKL coming along since it all begun it seems to me like people who win those will be regarded in a higher respect than the winner of rbss next year.

What does everyone think?

yeah good post

we'll see how it goes this year, imo if somebody really has a problem with rbss - they can just not participate thats it
i think in terms of popularizing the sport its a good thing - but yeah ofc it has a lot of things which should be different

speaking of poor judging - no offense to anyone - i thought there were some really controversial decisions in prague and in kuala lumpur
i wish rbss would hire real freestylers to judge rather than random clowns and footballers

i think sean and azun should be still credited and respected for winning 1st and 2nd rbss

It sucks already, I heard that RB in some of the countries doesn't even care about organizing the qualifications including Hungary as well. The Hungarian RB suggested organizing a video competition as the qualifications, lol. So yeah, I'd say it has lost credibility although the finals still might be good, who knows...

It never had any credibility in the first place.

I thought you were a fan of RBSS to some extent because of how many countries it's in?

Anyway I have to disagree with your opinion there, when Sean won he really felt like a deserving champion and had a brilliant final battle with Yosuke. Azun was also a deserving a champion. This time round however I just don't see us seeing many epic battles or even a worthy winner, I'm sceptical to say the least...

It may be the best we have but that doesn't make it credible imo. I agree, I'm not trying to take anything away from the champions.

If you think Prague and Kuala Lumpur were poorly judged, RBSS is 10x worse.

The problem with RBSS is the whole organization of it.  The actual competitions seem to be OK.  They still get a crowd out and the setup is pretty good for the most part.  The information and advertising is shit though.  Nobody knows what's going on.  They need to bring it all together so freestylers and fans can enjoy it.  There is no good way for fans to know what the hell is going on.

Every competition and every jury has some (at least) questionable decisions.

I'd highly disagree that RBSS is doing a shit job at advertising it since it's the most known and most viewed competition out there (not in the FF community/circles, but for the average Joe), their main problem is the absolute lack of communication with the FF community/scene.

Since we hit the topic of countries without RBSS this "season", which countries are on the list (that have had RBSS in the past or have a relevant scene)?

From what I know or have heard, so far it's: Hungary, Germany, France, Italy, Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia & Herzegovina.

It depends on how big market Red Bull has in a country. If it's small and they don't want to put that much money in to promote it, or the last years promotion was not a success, they just take the country of the RBSS list. They don't think about the freestyle part.

On the credibility part, I think that the winner is still discussed as a champion, even if the level will drop. After all it's our most worldwide and the biggest competition, even if it's bullshit by judging.

A few days ago I spoke with someone from the Red Bull Ukraine. Kiev office has sent in the Red Bull International application for participation in RBSS 2012. To perform a selection of his country must obtain the consent of Red Bull International. Kiev office has not received a response.

It's possible that in these countries also have applied and are waiting for a decision.

I doubt it, because if it's was this situation, they would actually tell them that, not that they are not doing RBSS next year because "it's not in their business plan" or "it's out of their budget". ;)

I know nobody gives a shit but Czech Republic doesnt have qualification as well... I asked what the fuck is happening and I was told they will give us first prize (going to world final) to our Czech Championship we have every year...
So its like nothing is happening but at least we got the prizes to our competition judges by real world known freestylers and with true players...
Anyway hope they will come with some proper explanation.

They should give something more to your competition...

@Lucaso: Yeah, that's how it's gonna be in most of the countries mentioned.

@Azun: Very true. Even though it's good in a way that freestylers will actually start doing of their own, which might carry on in the future (competitions), the way RB is acting on the matter is pathetic and just shows their real "face".

well its's easy for you to say it.. as you live in europe you have at least 4 big freestyle competition to take part in, plus the comps you get invited like the F3's ones... in latin america we harly have one or two national teeny weeny comps and no international ones... so yes! "i dont like RBSS so i just wont take part in the only big competition i have chance to join" ;)

Its not my fault that europe have more guys doing something for the sport... Im sure there are many competitions world wide,  but its not my fault the level in europe is higher then everywhere else... that poland got 7-8 guys in top 30 of the world...

The F3's  i like to think they pick people for reputation and skills...

Exactly. Competitions like Prague and Pyrzyce didn't just magically happen by themselves, they are competitions organized by freestylers, so maybe you guys should take some initiative and organize something of your own, instead of waiting for stuff to happen.

you guys dont understand. in south america teenagers just cant afford to travel to a different country. and "easy" things like a speaker system and a microphone are harder to organize and pay for here. its like 2 different worlds... teenagers in europe sometimes get pocket money which is higher than an adults wage in south america

If its 2 different worlds... It would be wrong to compare them... So if you live in another world you should have diffent expectation...
But the internet makes everything smaller... But its just a mather of time... Brazil Will be a new supernation... Like china...

ç

I think i was misunderstood... what i meant is that for people like you (Azun, a really skilled and well respected freestyler who deserve to get invited to competitions like F3's and more) is easy to say; "just don't take part, ignore it". And of course Europe deserve all that sick comps for the reasons you pointed out, but for people of latin america a continent with no train and no cheap plane tickets it's to hard to organize even a local event (including me and my country), this year i went to Colombia twice to compete, and even when I didn't payed any of the travels cos i got sponsored, the average amount of money i spent in that two trips was like 1200 dollars, same amount that i cannot afford by myself, and that's maybe the same amount of money you guys spent in the hotel in Prague.
So my point is, even when we don't like several aspects of RBSS is our only chance to be part of a big competition, so ignore it is not a possibility ;)
