Title: Why I "Quit"
Post by: oLi on Jul 19, 2011, 04:51: AM
1) LAW SCHOOL - I had a legit shot at getting in to law school and I wanted to make the best out of it. And this was not just any law school, it was the best one in the entire country, a university that's on world top lists and also happens to be 20 minutes from where I live.
My level of freestyle required several hours a day to only maintain and the way I saw things was that seeing how I had this good chance of getting in to law school I should do everything I can do actually make it happen so for obvious reasons things that took up a lot of time had to be neglected for this period of time (10 weeks).

2) LACK OF RESPECT - I felt like I didn't get the respect that I deserved from the freestyle community both in terms of my actual skill as well as knowledge and other abilities. I could never understand why freestylers that had zero versatility were in these compilations over and over or why garbage freestylers were getting well paid over seas gigs or jobs judging competitions and so on.

3) STAYING TRUE - I stay true to myself and that means I don't do anything I don't want to do. Freestyling for several hours a day enduring sometimes terrible pain and neglegting many social situations was something I was starting to get tired of.

4) BODY BUILDING - Since some time back I have been interested in body building and I have always been trying to transform my own body into what I believe is a masterpiece. All though I am still not there yet this is what I'm trying to do right now and it's not compatible with freestyle.

5) BOREDOM - Lowers got boring. It used to be such a passion filled thing to me but just as written in 2) I felt like I didn't get the respect I deserved. So what if some dude could do 5 alatws or another dude can do 15 amatws, he wasn't touching me in any other aspect than that one and I would destroy him in uppers, sits as well as performing and people didn't recognize it at all. So the only thing that mattered was amount of amatws nt one can do? No thanks to that.

And another thing - I have a hard time doing things without committing fully. If I do things I want to do them well.

So those are the main reasons in no particular order except for 1) being the greatest one. My day during that period would be wake up around 05:00-07:00 and study for 4-6 hours. After that I would have my first meal and study for another 4-6 hours. Eat. Bed. Repeat. Some days I would hit the gym as well. I distanced myself from everything negative and watched many motivational videos/listened to speeches and things like that.

And in terms of today - I am actually enjoying freestyle again. I had some shows so I had to re-learn some stuff which wasn't that hard. In terms of doing LP's I'm just as good as I was when I stopped putting in all those hours every day. I was at the Amsterdam meet and had a ton of fun and I will be at Prague as well.

I got in to law school.

I am now pursuing my body building goals.

Thank you for reading and if you have any questions I will gladly answer them.

Do you think your regained interest in freestyle could turn into something more?
Title: Re: Why I "Quit"

do you have any regrets?
why did you do heavy promotions of your website and forum and of yourself (answering questions on youtube) before announcing you lost passion?
what did you learn about yourself from this experience?
rate your lower experience in terms of achievement of goals on a scale of 10?

It depends on how much time I have and how easily I improve but I will never go back that what I once did

do you have any regrets?

Basically just one regret I think and that's being too big of a dick head on the forums in my younger days but it was all due to immaturity and I'm sure those I offended who have grown up as well also realize it and forgive me

Why wouldn't I? I just wanted what's best for freestyle and I believe that was it bur more importantly I want what's best for me so that's why I quit

What experience?

As in my life in general? Not very high because there's barely anyone who understand the difficulty of it. As far as how I rate it personally I would say it could be the most difficult thing I have ever done/achieved

Would you do it all over again?
Yeah. Freestyle is the best thing to ever happen to me.

the continous hardwork you put into lowers everyday ( 2 hours per day, was it?) and the years.

2 hours a day would be minimum only to maintain. I never maintained, I always improved. I averaged more than two hours a day.

What I learned from it is a lot of things. Some confirmation on theories like the more time you put into something the better you get which is true in general but not always. I also learned staying true to myself which is something not many people know how to do. People lie to others or do things they don't want to do because they can't stay true to themselves and thanks to freestyle I perfected that ability. I realised how much positive thinking can do as well as visualization.

You need to make your question a lot more specific because as of right now it's basically "what did you learn through freestyle" and I could answer that with a hundred page novel if I wanted to.

Doesn't bodybuilding require just as much time as freestyling for you? 2-3 hours in the gym seems about right, doesn't it? So how come you decided to pursue that instead of freestyle?

Intresting read dawg

1-How did you know it was you're time to leave the game and not just you hitting a motivational slump or a wall which you just had to push through?
2- What was you're main motivation and inspiration that made you wanna get up early in the morning, put the hours in and training you're ass off?
3- Do you think it's possible for somebody to train how you did for numerous years and not lose the passion and fire?
4- Plans for the future?

No. You can get a great work out with weights for major body parts in 30 minutes. I usually train for about 45-60 minutes with leg training being the exception which is always a little more than an hour especially if I do calves and/or abs too (making it closer to 90 min).

1 It just made sense. Just felt very clear like it was time.
2 Having competition dates would always be helpful. Also focusing on beating myself. I always competed versus myself making sure I improved and there was always something to be improved upon. There were many inspirational sources, it's hard to just mention one like that. It's also not really just a matter of inspirational sources but also a mind set I had. I was going to succeed and that was it.
3 Yes I do. If I could live off freestyle I might have done it.
4 With freestyle? Might do more than usual this summer but as school starts I'll cut back again.

1) Find out what ways there are in your country, there's usually more than one. Pick the one being the easiest for you. Find out how others have done. Stay focused.
2) No I most certainly can not but if I really really wanted to I am pretty sure I would be there within a month

Good to hear from you again Oli and I agree with what you have said.

It's basically changing from a boys life to a mans life, going from no responsibilities to ahh ok I have to actually do something
(career wise) with my life and it is hard to fit freestyle in particularly the level you were at.

I really do agree with your opinion on not getting the respect you deserve. But not just you, I mean all relatively new freestylers who rock
struggle to get the same attention as the old schoolers even if they are much better freestylers (weird ey).

Anyway good to see you have the passion back!

You didn't get the respect you 'deserved' because you treated everyone as if they were underneath you. Your outlook on yourself is another reason people may not respect you.
But everyone knows you were/are a high level freestyler. Actually, as I recall, you were much more 'respected' when you concentrated on new shit the most.

Yea I miss the feeling when it was really fun to land stuff but later on it became too much of a competition versus others "oh this guy did that so I gotta do this" sorta thing and trying a combo 5 days a week for 5 weeks and finally landing it only to feel like "oh well that's that" is something I certainly not miss and unfortunately that's the feeling I remember the strongest

Hey man I think I remember you from waaaaaay back. FDU days? Right? Cool to get your input. Take care!

I didn't treat everyone as if they were underneath me. I treated those underneath me as if they were underneath me. I stay true to myself and I stay true to the truth, if someones underneath me I'm not pretending he isn't. People like you for example.

Since growing up I'm sure I've always treated people with the respect they deserve. If someone disagrees a recent example of not doing so is gladly seen.

With that attitude you'll never be respected by anyone that has respect for themselves.
I hope you enjoy the little respect you have from people, if there are any left.
Have a great day.

this is pretty funny tbh... funny how u and max both said it was a competitive thing to be better than others in lowers.. i know im not a proper hardcore lower fser, but ive never really looked at it like that.

if you just do what you wanna do, usually people will give you recognition for it. me for example, im not one of the best freestylers in europe by ANY means.. (in terms of fs ability i wouldnt put myself in the top 30)

however, in terms of being well-known id say im at the top of the list, i dont know why, but my guess it because i just do what i want with my freestyle, make some vids and organized amsterdam

so clearly, actual freestyle ability has little to do with gaining recognition on a large scale

ok its quite late and im still feeling ill, so that post probably doesnt make any sense or serve any purpose whatsoever, but yeah haha...
peace to all, and to all a good night.

Omg haha this is hilarious. I think what Oli means in regards to treating people with the respect they deserve is that if there is a person who has reached a high level in freestyle through training, then they get treated with more respect than a beginner who can only do basic tricks and trains once a week. Thats just mindblowingly obvious logic.

On topic, you have been a massive inspiration to me in recent months and have completely changed the way I train for the better so I can only thank you for that. You're always honest no matter what and that is a very rare quality. This forum and freestyle in general severely misses you.

This is still wrong in my books.  Whether you are being honest or not, it's not right.  You should treat all people with respect, not just those who are on your "level."  And I'm not just talking about freestyle ability, just life in general.  If I walked past a bum, I wouldn't talk shit to him.  With your logic, you would.  Genuinly good people don't look to demean those who are "underneath" them.  Do correct me if I'm misunderstanding you.  Otherwise, you haven't matured one bit, son.

Oh shit you're right, my bad. What's good tho is I don't even feel bad for breaking that promise because it turns out you're a dick head so it's all good with me and my morals even though I would prefer to actually give you one.

This topic has gotten way off topic due to one moderator *cough* good job *cough* and I'm not really interested in the personal attack fest it's turned in to. I have no problems with myself and if someone actually does who has met me I would love it if that person could let me know, even anonymously, so that I can improve on that aspect. That's what life's about guys, improving at stuff, becoming a better person.

Much love,
signing out

Peace yo

I didn't treat everyone as if they were underneath me. I treated those underneath me as if they were underneath me. I stay true to myself and I stay true to the truth, if someones underneath me I'm not pretending he isn't. People like you for example.

You have misunderstood. It wasn't meant like that at all.

What I meant was more like if me and someone is having a debate on x and I happen to be the one who's the expert and he's the noob, I'm not pretending as if that case isn't such.
lol, sure. In your other post you said you talked down to me. We haven't has a debate about freestyle in...I don't even remember.
You say that you're always true to yourself yet you also say that aren't the same person online that you are in real life and it would be stupid to judge you based on your online personality. You also said that you were going to send me a copy of your dvd.
The amount of bullshit that comes out of you is overwhelming. Stay 'true'.
Oh shit you're right, my bad. What's good tho is I don't even feel bad for breaking that promise because it turns out you're a dick head so it's all good with me and my morals even though I would prefer to actually give you one.

personal attack fest it's turned in to.
That's a personal attack.
I was explaining why people may have never given you the respect you crave so much, just look at the way you talk down to people. Seeing as you seem to be so awesome in real life, how about you project that personality here? Did that ever cross your mind?

If you want the topic locked let me know. Everything except a few posts is semi-related so I don't see the the reason for locking the thread.

Just to show the names you made angry in a very short time:
Brizze
Oli
Macca
Max
Ethan

now you should think about what these names are known for.

3) STAYING TRUE - I stay true to myself and that means I don't do anything I don't want to do. Freestyling for several hours a day enduring sometimes terrible pain and neglegting many social situations was something I was starting to get tired of.
What kind of social situations?

A solution? To what?

I think you're wondering if it hindered me? No, evidently not.
