Ok, for those of you who actually know what a book is......Congratulations!
and for those very few of you who have actually ever read a book, then this thread is for YOU!
here you can talk about your favorite books
my favorite books are the Harry Potter ones, although i cant help but feel dissapointed at the way the Seventh Book ended, i would have expected a amazing fight, and some of the important characters to have died in the last book, but instead of that, i got a ending fight that lasted half a seccond, and it was all over, over 10 years of books finished with one spell, so that was kinda sucky, but that dosent make the Harry Potter books any less enjoyable, i also like the Narnia books, there short books but there really fun to read, but i thought that the First movie of Narnia was a load of rubbish, i diddent like any part of it, the costumes looked like something you would buy of the street and the actors where just dreadfull, Narnia tried to do what harry potter did, by moving on to the movie screen after starting out as a book, but i think that if the seccond movie is as bad as the first, no one will even bother to go and see the other ones whenever there made.

harry potter is gay my fav book would have to be white fang.
its about a young wolf and it follows its life. cant remember how it ended.

Harry Potter rules and the ending was brilliant.
Snabba cash's great as well. It's a swedish book, so I doubt anyone here has read it.

i like henning mankell ;)
-
so does my mom.
Me myself havn't read anything from him. I'm not into that type of books really.
-
what type? thrillers?
ive read the wallander ones couple of years ago. good
what type do you prefer? since i dont know what snabba cash´s is about.
-
I don't like whodunit type of books :dontknow:
I prefer books with a story which could be a real situation of some kind. The book has to have brilliant resolutions, like the Harry Potter one.
-
lol intellectual thread for hp readers. one of my favorite books was in cold blood by capote. i also liked the silmarillion, its so boring but tolkien fucking rules, no1 else can write a book like that
-
Yeah Harry Potter books were the only ones I could truly get lost in and just envy them so much and the fantasy of it all, I too was disappointed by the ending and quite sad loll, strange what words can do... Although she put in the ending to show it was a 'happily ever after' but it was just too cheesy.
In english we're currently doing frankenstein, and although the concept of the book is great and there are some amazing parts and dilemmas and twists, it just drags on a little too much and there are parts with not enough action for me to keep reading.
If anyone could recommend me a 'must read' that'd be great.
-
i have read only 1 book, Harry Potter 6
i´m not like those who really like to read
-
Frankenstein is boring
"Hopscotch" by Cortazar is a favorite of mine
-
one of my all time favorites is The Swiss Robinson Family (or something like that) i lost the book years ago in a moving, but i almost finished reading it, and its just Great, that would be a DEF must read for anyone
-
if you want to talk about intellectualism, then dont talk about Harry Potter:
my favorite books are Fearful Symmetry by Northrop Frye (a critical study of the poetry of William Blake), Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott, Dream of Scipio (forget the author), American Night (poetry of Jim Morrison = lead singer of the Doors :rockit:), The Road by Cormac McCarthy, and The Selected Poetry of Ted Hughs (1957-1994). Also, various poems by WB Yeats, William Blake, and others, and the philosophy of Heidegger, Plato, Spinoza, Hegel, and many others.

just because you read generic, manufactured garbage does not make you intellectual. People read that stuff to entertain themselves (I did), not to think. Call it the 'reading thread' if you want to discuss books.

your ignorance is astounding. Nobody who reads proper literature would consider them even good. They require no thought or intellect at all.
-
i'm currently reading

yeah I liked it too. Its portrayal of children + race in the south was pretty groundbreaking when it was written. Anybody read Gates of Fire by Steven Pressfield? Or MOBY DICK by Herman Melville?
-

someone who 'dossent' read at all is far less intellectual than someone who doesn't read at all.

The "Planet Earth" books, there 3 or 4 books, my favorite one is "Planet Earth - The Future" you can buy it thru my website or thru Amazon, for only £5.99, its not just some boring book about Global Warming, its like a science novel, and it gives a bunch of different theorys of how the world will be in the future, its awesome.
or if your looking for a book that will get you thinking, then buy "David Feckahm - My Backside"
-
white fang. you cant go pased that book

you have shit taste a10s...and if I'm registering your intellectual range correctly, then if you dont like it, it's a great piece of literature. White Fang is a very good book. So are Call of the Wuld and Before Adam by the same author (Jack London). People read the "Dream of Eagles" series by Jack Whyte. It is an interesting take on Britain during the fall of Rome, and the Arthurian legends.
-
Tastes vary. Shit, I didn't like "White Fang."
-

yes but do you think that Harry Potter is a 'great book' or more specifically, good literature?
Has anyody read Dream of Scipio? It was ridiculously awesome
-
No, but I could definitely see how he could enjoy Harry Potter, or prefer Harry Potter to classic literature. It's just one of those things.

"Spelet". A Swedish book.
whats it supposed to be about?
It's based on two guys who are actually not attractive or anything but yet manage to get the hottest girls.
The book is like a guide on how to deal with women, what to do, when to do it, what to say, when to say it etcetc.
It's supposed to be a true story as I said and the guys have done it for several years just playing mind games trying to learn how women think and etcetc. Seems promissing and very interesting for me. I think there's an English version aswell, idk what it's called but if I translate spelet it'll be "the game" in English.

-
what an ignorant fuck...
books are the containers of our past, and the most beautiful culmination of human thought.
-
Why the fuck is this thread so far down?
After business deals and the stress of taxes and all that BS, I unwind with great books.
My favorites as of right now:
The Denial of Death by Ernest Becker
The Automatic Homeowner Millionaire by David Bach
All about commodities by Russel R.Wasendorf
The power of Alpha-thinking by Jess Stern
The Great Gatsby by (scotts fitzgerald?)
Gangster by Lorenzo Carcaterra (do not be fooled by the title, very meaningful book).
-
I've been reading recently:
The English Patient by Michael Ondaatje (beautiful prose, great story)
On The Road by Jack Kerouac (need I say more?)
Ulysses by James Joyce (a mindfuck, but one that's well worth it)
Stardust by Frank Bidart (really good poet, the book was runner up for the pulitzer, should have won)
Said the Shotgun to the Head by Saul Williams (the man is fucking insane...bothy meanings apply)
The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien (I'm only halfway through at this point, but it's really excellent)
The Gates of the Elect Kingdom by John Wood (excellent, erudite poetry...winner of the Iowa Poetry Prize)
Illustrations of Being: Drawing Upon Heidegger and Upon Metaphysics by Graeme Nicholson (this has one idea per page that will blow your mind, whether it's a new reading of Descartes, or just unpacking the intellectual jargon-fest that is Martin Heidegger)
As always, I'm reading tons of Geoffrey Hill, who is my favorite poet, and William Butler Yeats
I read his Per Amica Silentia Lunae again, and it's amazing. And his poetry, of course, is some of the best ever written.
anyone else?
-
all of Harry Potters, Anthony Horowitz books, Clive Cussler, Pélé Autobiography

apparently, he's a pretty decent poet. i'm surprised; because, he's a fucking awful rapper
i haven't been reading too much lately. i've been enjoying my few weeks off from school. i have been listening to steve reich and a bunch of bossa nova, though; so, i think i'm cultured enough w/o the books
-
i need to get more into books. i always say im going to read but i never do. has this happened to anyone before, and what do u suggest for help? the only thing i have read the past few years on my own free time is sports illustrated (magazine)
-
anyone tried Dante's Divine Comedy? i dont know, i started reading it, but i think im gonna stop and read it when im older and wiser  i dont know im pretty sure ill enjoy it more. hmmm Pride and Prejudice is a good book too, can get boring but the way the autor describes the characters is pretty amazing

He is a pretty decent poet, but honestly I think he's a better musician. If you think he's an awful rapper, you should listen to a song that's not on NiggyTardust. I mean, I like that album, but it's not good as a rap album. His earlier stuff is much more interesting.
@ the music: meh. Check out theorchestral shit the Ian Anderson does/did during the Secret Language of Birds and Rupi's Dance eras up to now. Some really fuckin' interesting stuff there. But also...read.
@SeBas: I've read parts of the Inferno, if that does anything for you. I'd recommend it for sure.

Damnit...fucking with me. You know how I always come to the man's defense. You couldn't resist, could you?
To each his own, about the music.
About the reading...I guess. I'm actually enjoying novels less and less. Plot stopped doing much for me. Poetry is far more interesting to me at this point. I read tons of it.
-

nope :pimp:
About the reading...I guess. I'm actually enjoying novels less and less. Plot stopped doing much for me. Poetry is far more interesting to me at this point. I read tons of it.
i don't like novels, and i don't like poetry. i will read the newspaper from time to time. i like non-fiction, but i've been too poor to buy books and don't feel like going to the library

Just borrow from people, and then keep on forgetting to give the book back until you want to. Just find a friend who reads and mooch like fuck.
