Title: martial arts: styles
Post by: TheGodEmperor on Apr 15, 2008, 11:57: AM
So I do martial arts, and I know some others here do as well. I think it would be cool if we discussed the advantages and disadvantages of different styles. I do Shotokan Karate-Do and Judo. I also know about Tae Kwon Do because my dad used to do it. I find Tae Kwon Do to be more impractical than my style because not enough hand technique is used. I have always thought Muay Thai looks cool because of its use of knees and elbows. Any thoughts?

there is already a thread on this, anyways i do muay thai, been doing it for awile and i would say it is the best type of martial art. Reason being that it is like street fighting, and would be of most use in fighting someone you dont know in the street. But if you did something such as aikido or karate or somethin it would be harder for you to fight on the street than in training.

Muay Thai is not just knees and elbows, also legs and hands

lol you wouldnt be so impressed if you got into a fight with a muay thai fighter  :boxing:  ....meaning that he would beat you (incase you tried to turn it around)

Muy Thai, Boxing, Krate ect ect will do nothing once you get in a grapple situation.

which is why I do judo. And also, the point of karate, muay thai, etc is not to get into a grapple situation

Its a grappling style, basically ground fighting, getting an oppenent on the ground and pressuring him to give in. My muay thai master does this, and i was sparrin against him, and he used it on me, i got screwed lol

"Japanese Jujutsu focuses more on self-defense, striking, and standing grappling, especially Goshin Jujitsu. Jujutsu is the Gentle Art, and was invented is various ryus, or styles, in feudal Japan, and was perfected in the 1600's by the samurai. Jujutsu yielded the arts of Judo, Aikido, Hapkido, since Aikijujutsu was the most selective and private Ryu, and all of the Japanese styles of karate.

Judo, the sportive version of Japanese Jujutsu, is a style of submission wrestling, and is thought to be the best throwing art. Judo has over 67 throws, plus reaps/ trips, takedowns, and various breakfalling techniques to land safely after being thrown. Judo also has the best, meaning fastest chokes, with some knocking people out in as little as three seconds. And lastly, Judo contains wrestling techniques, mat holds or pins, and a lot of arm and shoulder locks, or armbars. Judo is now considered to be the most modern version of Japanese Jujutsu.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, considered to be the most effective groundfighting art ever, focuses almost exclusively on groundfighting. Jiu-Jitsu comes from Judo, and was adapted by Helio Gracie to be more effective for weaker and smaller people, such as himself, as many Judo throws require either flawless technique, or else a good bit of strength. Jiu-Jitsu has the most devastating arsenal of chokes and joint-locks, and the best grappling positioning techniques. We like to say in the art, "if there's a joint, we can break it." Jiu-Jitsu has self-defense applications, but don't be fooled, it started out as a sport. Just about all of the BJJ techniques are found in Judo, and vice versa"

Is this what you were looking for

street fighting is my martial arts. i think when you get into a real fight you dont have time to think of martial arts moves unless you have been doing that shit for a long time.

I'll let someone who fights respond, but the way that people incorporate martial arts (especially more "stereotypically" traditional martial arts) into mma (not to mention that there is a lot of boxing and wrestling in mma) is really not what you're thinking.

Thats what muay thai is for. Muay thai is like street fighting, and you dont need to do it for a long time for it to help you in a street fight

I must find a BJJ school in Toronto. I need to work on my on the ground stuff and my throws. AKA do more Judo, which is basically a more upright form of BJJ. But then again, if I'm up against an experienced grappler/wrestler, I'd want to learn groundholds besides submission, which I know quite well.  And SeBas, capoeira is effective kn a martial sense only because they use body fakes, so they have ypu going one way, and then their foot comes at you from a completely different direction. I heard that from this portuguese dude who knows a few styles of wrestling, upright fighting, and streetfighting. He was a beast, he showed me like 3 new holds in 10 minutes. Apparently, alot of the shit he knows is passed down through his family  :saywhat: My dad (who also does martial arts: wrestling, karate, judo, tae kwon do...) saw him practicing with a staff, and he was wicked

the guy with the blue gloves has power on his roundhouse kicks, but his technique isnt perfect because his pullback will kill his knees. 10 years from now, he wont be able to walk. And his punching technique needs some major work, but thats not his style of fighting anyway. He has perfect hipthrows though.
