Title: Messi or Ronaldo
Post by: Adi on Feb 07, 2011, 04:57: PM
Who do you rate higher?  They are obviously the two best players in world football.

Ronaldo just became the fastest player to reach 50 goals in Spain.  Both him and Messi are scoring around a goal a game.

Insane!  So dominant!   :undecided:

Messi without doubt. Better player, better goal scorer.

to be honest I havent seen enough of either to make a far judgment but I would say Ronaldo just because he has a bit more of an aerial threat and power and in my opinion a bigger impact of presence for his team

It seems Ronaldo has been pushed up way too high at Madrid.  He plays a different role now.  Yes, he's scoring a lot, but he's not creating like he used to for Man U.   I remember him receiving the ball aroun the half way line and then taking people on and creating for his team.  Now he gets it so far up the pitch that he doesn't get to create as much.  I guess it's just Mourinho's system.

Ronaldo has created a goal since 2006. A couple of seasons ago, it took him until January to get an assist! He is a goal machine, can't see a pass paticulary well

I'm not disagreeing with you much, but here are his assist numbers at club level over the past few years:

2010/11 - 6 in 22 games
2009/10 - 7 in 28 games
2008/09 - 6 in 31 games
2007/08 - 7 in 31 games
2006/07 - 14 in 31 games

Not the best but also not that bad.  You also gotta consider the goals he creates without making the final pass.  He opens up space and pulls defenders out of their positions.

Ronaldo's goal threat compensates for his lack of passing vision. I mean, would you rather CR7 making the final pass at the edge of the box or bursting into the box to receive the pass and score? Also, if I was a goalkeeper playing against ronaldo I would rather see ronnie dribbling at the half way line than blasting a 100 mile per hr rocket at me. I'd take the half line dribble thanks :039:

For a top attacking player, he needs to provide more assists if he wants to be called "obviously one of the two best players in the world". He is a great goal scorer but better than Xavi as a player? No way. Xavi completed 100% of his passses the other day in one match. He is a supreme player who WILL go down as one of the all time greats. Ronaldo, top two goal scorers in the world, top 5 player.

I love Xavi but think that Ronaldo will be ahead of him when all is said and done.
Title: Re: Messi or Ronaldo
Post by: Adi on Feb 14, 2011, 05:43: AM
I think Ronaldo would be great on any team.  I don't think the same thing can be said of Xavi.  I think he needs lots of quality around him.  He'd still be brilliant but he wouldn't be able to impact the game without the supporting cast.  Ronaldo, on the other hand, can do it on his own.
Title: Re: Messi or Ronaldo
Post by: jabarinho on Feb 14, 2011, 07:35: AM
it is really hard to compare xavi and ronaldo because they have different styles and play in diferent positions. It is hard enough to compare messi and ronaldo even though they play in the same position (basically).
Xavi's amazing ability to keep possession and always make the right pass is invaluable. CR7 and messi's ability to score goals and unbalance opposition defenses is also invaluable. So it is hard to compare. :017:
If I was to put my head on a block and pick one I still pick messi above ronnie and xavi, because he has great pass vision AND scores a shitload of goals.

To be remembered as an all time great you've got to have dragged teams through winning tournaments. Pele, Maradona, Platini. Xavi has done that already with both Barca and Spain...I just dont see Ronaldo doing that.
Title: Re: Messi or Ronaldo
Post by: jabarinho on Feb 14, 2011, 08:05: AM
This is true. Nobody remembers who finished second. But in terms of quality of individual performances, putting the group accolades aside, xavi cannot be ahead of ronnie.
Also, put CR7 in that spain team and that barca team and I am sure he have the same trophies as xavi.
Newayz, messi still pwns them both lol :098:
Title: Re: Messi or Ronaldo
Post by: Adi on Feb 15, 2011, 05:38: AM
Xavi didn't drag any team anywhere... he's been on dominant teams whenever he's had success.  Spain and Barca have been miles ahead of everyone else over the last 5 years.  No arguing that.  Portugal is half the team Spain is, and Ronaldo has played in the semi-final of the World Cup and final of EURO with a team that's not as good as others in the tournament.  He wasn't great throughout those tournaments but he helped him team get there, something we can't say for Messi with Argentina for example.

jarbinhead, Xavi's individual performances are better than Ronaldos.

Adi, Yes Xavi has been on good teams but he dictates everything on the pitch for possibly the greatest club side ever. If Spain and Barca replaced Xavi with Ronaldo they would not be as successful.

i m into freestyle, not much interest in soccer. but honestly messi is insane regardless of statistics. his style, his speed, his ability to play one with the team everything attracts my attention.
Title: Re: Messi or Ronaldo
Post by: jabarinho on Feb 16, 2011, 03:41: AM
lol @ 'jarbinhead'... :017:.....when xavi has a bad game or an average game, barca and spain usually still win and play well. When CR7 has a bad game madrid and portugal play shit and usually have to battle out a draw.
Also, man utd would never have won champ league and BPL in 2008 without ronnie's 40 goals in all competitions. Xavi and ronnie both have great individual abilities but I give the edge to ronnie.
Title: Re: Messi or Ronaldo
Post by: TheKingNut on Feb 17, 2011, 12:55: AM
When Ronnie has a bad game Portugal play shit? He was supremely average in 2004 and 2006 but they still got very far in tournaments.

You wouldn't know if Spain or Barca win when Xavi plays badly because he never does. He is so consistenly excellent that you wouldn't know.

anyone who thinks ronaldo is better can fuck off..
Messi is a genious, probably going to be the greatest player since Maradona ever..
Lets hope he doesnt do a Ronaldinho and become unmotivated and fat in a few years...
Messi can take on 10 players and score from ridiculous situations..Plus hes not an arrogant shit.
Furthermore, Messi scored a great header against Man utd in the champions league final 2 yrs ago, so forget all this stuff about aerial threat

Messi all day all day

I thought i cleared this up for u already Nutman? Ronnie's job is not to make passes, dribble at the half-way line and switch play for his team like xavi. If u told me xavi better than alonso or pepe or khedira i could understand, because xavi dominated the midfield area.
And besides it is plain to see for any1 that messi won that champ lgue 1st leg all by himself. Xavi didn't do shit, except make a few sideways and backward passes to keep possession.
BTW i didn't hear u say anything after pepe dominated xavi in the king's cup final.....culminating with a brilliant headed goal by ronnie.
Also dude this is the 'messi vs ronnie' thread :embarrassed: Why didn't u post this in the 'xavi best player in the world' thread that u made?
Title: Re: Messi or Ronaldo
Post by: Adi on May 01, 2011, 07:40: AM
Pepe was also crucial in the first half.  He kept Xavi more quite than usual.  He certainly didn't have his way.  I think the game would've turned out differently had he stayed on the pitch.

Speaking of Ronaldo, he's still having a brilliant season.  He is frustrated though.  He's not playing the football he wants to play.  Mourinho is using him differently, not allowing him to come deep to get the ball and dribble up.  I don't think this does Ronaldo any favors.  In a more free flowing offense, he'd be the #2 player in the world again.

Kingnut, this is not the right thread to talk about your man crush on xavi haha :098: .....Ok im just joking u can post whatever u want.....but still ronnie pwns xavi. And messi pwns ronnie!

Xavi is being talked about in this thread because you said previously that Messi and Ronaldo "are clearly the best 2 players in the world". This is a false statement. I'm sorry but I cannot sit around and read someone like you, who uses phrases such as "didn't do shit", talk about football as if you know something about the game.

I'm not saying Ronaldos job is to "make passes, dribble on half way line and switch play for his team like Xavi" (I must add, this is the worst desciption I have ever read on Xavi). Xavi and Ronaldo are different types of players...but Xavi is better. Barcelona are the greatest club side of this generation, and Xavis their man. He dictates every game he plays in. When Ronaldo starts being the man for the greatest side on the planet...then we can talk. I'm begging you to stop writing about football. I cringe every time I read your statements. Have you ever been to watch a football game before?

I've only been to a match once. And that is only because i was tagging along with someone. But i don't understand your point :017: will i suddenly learn more about football when i go to matches more regularly?
And ok, maybe they are not CLEARLY the 2 best players because i know some ppl have different opinions. But you have to admit xavi needs help around him from iniesta, messi etc to make barca the best team. Come on man admit it. So your point about being ‘their man’ for the best team in the world does not prove xavi’s position as better than ronaldo. That point is irrelevant.
And besides i remember Ronnie being part of that manutd team in 2008 that beat Barcelona, with xavi in it, and then went on to win the final. That year Ronnie was clearly the main man scoring 42 goals in the season and winning the BPL and champ lgue :Woot_Emoticon: So Ronnie has experienced being the main man for a winning team before.
Also xavi does not dictate every game he plays in. Again i point to the King's cup final which you conveniently never said anything about

When Ronaldo did that he was on top of the world..not anymore though. Youve been to one football match? Oh dear.

I'm not conveniently not talking about it.. I saw it. It was an awful match...please dont give Pepe credit. He was a center half playing midfield and just threw himself around.

Bored of you now..dont talk to me, you are shit.

sorry to bring up a slightly old topic, but I much rather prefer watching messis game than ronaldos! With his style and speed together make such a good show, and he does make a couple of nice passes and assists, unlike ronaldo in my opinion. The one thing lacking in messi sometimes is aggression, but that's just my opinion. Messi is, by far, better in my mind though, since he is a well rounded player, not arrogant, and his goals mostly aren't luck; he plans out the way he scores.

I was just pondering the same thing, along with if we can say one is better now but the other is better for all-time. Personally, I'd put Messi ahead for all time but Ronaldo slightly ahead for the moment.

But on the topic of the best of all time, will either ever move ahead of Pele or Maradona you think? I came across this list of the best soccer players ever (http://www.ranker.com/crowdranked-list/the-best-soccer-players-of-all-time), as ranked by their crowd. I guess I agree with that list to a certain extent but I also made my own list to add to the rankings. It didn't move the players much. Maybe we need to vote more. Thoughts?

for either to move ahead of pele and maradona they will have to maintain a great level for a whole career. But im not in a position to judge that because i have never seen pele or maradona play lol.....thats before my time :victory:

ronaldo as a solo player, but when it comes to the game and making your team better as a whole, messi is the better one, creates more.
